Re: The Rest of the ECAC Reg Season - 15 years ago
Chris '03Jim Hyla And we can't have Harvard get fourth... It's remarkable that a team that went two months without a win and almost a year without a road win could be in line for a bye. They really should play for ties this next weekend. 7-7-8 would be a sweet record. Sweet! "We'll tie anybody, anywhere!" Or perhaps they could go for Boeing sponsorship.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Union 2, Cornell 4 - Senior Night (2nd intermission) - 15 years ago
My, seeing the replay, Ross did a wonderful job crashing the net on his second goal. He went strong, fought through the initial save, stopped the puck with his skate, and then made sure to whack it in with the stick just before getting clobbered. Great effort.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Union 1, Cornell 3 - Senior Night (2nd period) - 15 years ago
You know, Union isn't such a bad team. Their power play moves the puck very well. We, considering our (generally) clean play, might be the exact wrong team for them to play.by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Chris '03 Remind me again, where does "Jungle Love" fall? While we're (or at least you) are being crotchety, when's the last time "Star" was played? I feel like I haven't heard that in ages. I'll take "Arrangements Never Intended for the Marching Band" for $400, Alex. As far as "Star" (not "Star!" goes, I swear that I heard it a couple ofby Scersk '97 - Hockey

CowbellGuy Also--and trust me, this is painful for me to say--I think, musically, Harvard's Pep Band is now the best-sounding band in the league. They certainly lack pep and there is strength in numbers--they fill a whole damn section--but their arrangements (except Shipping Up To Boston and New World Symphony) are good, and the lot of them are clearly competent musically. Re: Cornell 3 RPI 0 Postgame - 15 years ago
Swampy How about them apples? If we had a few more players like this, we would have a chance at the NCAA title. In fact, some of them did. I was thinking much the same thing when I was making my list. It's striking how often great Cornell teams have had one (or two) of these "top" penalty performers. They are the kind of player that provides an "edge" that, well, can turnby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell 3 RPI 0 Postgame - 15 years ago
lynah80In four games since his suspension by the ECAC, Eric Burgdoefer has resumed his pursuit of the NCAA PIM record.... He leads the team with 88 PIM and Rensselaer is still #3 in the nation behind Ferris St. and Mankato. But don't you kind of miss having players like him? (Well, not exactly like him, but you'll get the idea here.) Mike Schafer Sr 1986 91 Rob Levasseur So 1987 95by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Postgame thread: Cornell 2 at Harvard 4 - 15 years ago
Replying to myself, I notice that I didn't calculate particularly well last night. Quite obviously, we need 5 points of the last 8 to assure ourselves of a bye. If we were to win 2 and SLU to win 4, we would be tied with them for points and total wins. The next tiebreaker, record vs. top 4, turns out badly for us. Assuming Dartmouth able to win a couple of games, the tie with SLU would likeby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Postgame thread: Cornell 2 at Harvard 4 - 15 years ago
I'd have thought. No matter what those chuckle-head TV announcers say, we have a huge hole down the middle without Michael Kennedy. He can't come back soon enough. When Mugford has to center the 3rd line instead of the checking line, we've got problems. The reality of the situation, though, is that (knock on wood) all we have to do is win two of our last four (cue Jim Mora) and we get a weeby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Clarkson Postgame Thread - 15 years ago
TrotskyScersk '97It probably felt a whole lot like losing to RPI in 1985, Harvard in 1986, Harvard and SLU from 1988–89, and us in 2002, 2003, and 2005. We were good, but they were just better.Harvard in 86 and SLU in 88-89 didn't feel like that. They were "sneaky good" -- it felt like you played them even, maybe even outplayed them, and then at the end you look at the scoreboard andby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Clarkson Postgame Thread - 15 years ago
Beeeej Todd White is still one of the best players I've ever seen at the college level. Back then, we didn't have any remotely legitimate Hobey contenders, so it was easier to recognize and appreciate a standout on another team. Agreed. Todd White was indeed dominant. Some of our surly behavior in '97 probably had to do with how thoroughly outplayed we were in both regular season games thaby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Clarkson Postgame Thread - 15 years ago
The only observation/critique I can make regarding this weekend is whether we had the right checking lines for each night. Punches was in for Roeszler on Saturday. One would assume, barring some unknown injury, that this was due to Roeszler's -2 on Friday. (EDIT: Or a poorly timed cross-check.) But the power play seems to hum with Roeszler quarterbacking, and how beneficial it would have beby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell moves to #1 in KRACH and Pairwise - 15 years ago
Sorry, it took my nose a couple of seconds to find the more interesting scenario. Yale hosts Bridgeport and UNH hosts Manchester. So, imagine the seeds as: 1 BU 16 Ni 2 ND 15 AF 3 Vt 14 NH (switch) 13 Ya ---> Bridgeport 4 Cr 13 Ya 14 NH ---> Manchester So, the committee would be faced with shipping BU out West to face Air Force or Niagara or keepby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell moves to #1 in KRACH and Pairwise - 15 years ago
BeeeejChris 02Interesting twists to the pairwise before last night's games. Yale makes the tournament, and as a host, gets a favorable location no less! Of course, 6+ more weeks to play. FYP. That bracketology was based on a PWR where we were tied for third; now we're tied for fourth after Saturday's games. Yeah, after last night, if you're playing at home, I think we would be in Mby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell #4 USCHO Rankings - 15 years ago
BeeeejScersk '97If anything, this year's ECAC race looks an awful lot like 1996, when five teams went down to the wire for the four home ice slots. (Ask Colgate fans from that time about what it means to miss out on home ice.) It's nice to be leading instead of chasing. Where is Matt Weder these days, anyway? Still in analysis, I would think.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell #4 USCHO Rankings - 15 years ago
To me, it all comes down to next weekend. Clarkson seems to be resurgent, and SLU is one of the better teams in the league, even if their record within league doesn't show it. Depending on how many points we pick up, you can compare this year's team to these other years (within the ECAC): 4 points = 2003 3 points = 2002, 2005 2 points = 1991 1 point = 1985 0 points = 1988, 1997, 2001,by Scersk '97 - Hockey

martyJosh '99That cheer is so annoying that I think I'd rather listen to the Michigan band play their fight song over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Oh yeah? RichH Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. Now can I rant about how stupid it is to hold the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in a gimmicky location such as a football field?? I can't imagine the sight-lines, amenities, or atmosphere will compare to a place that was specifically designed for hockey. That's it, Rich. Re: (!) - 15 years ago
Chris '03By theoretically seeing a good princeton team twice, Cornell's t-10 sos improves. Thus, it can continue to play local rivals like binghamton, colgate, and hobart (and bad ivy teams!) without as strong tourney repercussions. Given that the tournament will be held on the "season’s last weekend," won't this actually put one of these games in jeopardy?1 I think we're essentiallyby Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: Yale - 15 years ago
RobbThe NCAA regional final will be the first time we really face a top team all season. Are we good enough to contain Blue Chip forwards? Do we have enough scoring punch to beat a really fast defense? Those are unanswered questions, and given our schedule, they will continue to be unanswered until our regional final. Obviously, I hope that I'm wrong and that we ARE that good - but I just can'by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: ECAC Expansion is a horrible idea - 15 years ago
SwampyThe issue ought not to be if they would be at the absolute bottom of the conference. Instead, the issue ought to be if, over the long run, they would be above or below the current average, thereby pulling the entire conference up or down. I agree, actually. In the quality-of-hockey sense, I believe that Niagara would eventually be an above-average member. ( ) SwampyThe ECAC needs a sby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: ECAC Expansion is a horrible idea - 15 years ago
CUontheslopes Niagara has never been good (a national power like us or dare I say Clarkson or more recently Princeton) nor do I see them being good in the future.... I'm completely against adding another bottom feeder to the conference. Other posters have dealt with other portions of what you've written, so I'll restrict myself to this part. Re: ECAC Expansion is a horrible idea - 15 years ago
I'm right with Jim on this one. We play Niagara every year on our own accord, so, for completely selfish reasons, why not make them part of the conference schedule? And then there's this misconception: CUontheslopesI'm sorry but I do not understand why people are so eager to add Niagara to the ECAC. All they'd do is weaken our already weak SOS. Niagara and RIT just are not good hockey progby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Other ECAC Results - 15 years ago
Which was my point. Kalemba's been so shaky, it seems, that Gadowsky wanted to look at another goalie. The RPI game looked like a good game in which to get that look... I mean, it's only RPI, right?by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Rope in Etienne Belzile and Marc Deschamps to help with the recruiting and start making some visits! Re: Are we that good? (Cornell after 10 games) - 15 years ago
CowbellGuyScersk '97You see, it always takes time for forward lines to gel, and Schafer usually messes around with them late into the season. He's not. He (or maybe Casey Jones) knows something. I'm sure Casey knows something. However, that would be defense.
