Re: Harvard's new aid plan - 16 years ago
This seemed like the best place to ask the question, even through the thread contains my dithering on up above to no great purpose. What kind of campaign would it take for Cornell to offer the kind of programs that the other Ivies are offering? What about free tuition? Are these pie-in-the-sky numbers or achievable goals (if not by the current alumni, then by future generations)?by Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Princeton 2 Cornell 1 postgame - 16 years ago
TurkeyboneA little birdy tells me Andrew J. Noel punished the band for waving newspapers during the Princeton player introductions -- now in a thread people will read! He really has too much time on his hands. I wonder if I'm getting my money's worth out of his reign of good behavior?by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Al DeFlorionyc941970 is not the modern era in college hockey? I think that article needs some editing. Sheesh. The other day we learned anything pre-1985 was "pre-modern." Perhaps my choice of words was unfortunate; "pre-split" might have been a better adjective. Yet, I will have to remind you that, while the "pre-split," or "pre-modern," era of the ECby Scersk '97 - Other Sports

Al DeFlorioScersk '97We can also depend on the kindness of strangers: there is, in fact, a scenario where we lose both games and end up in fourth. Happened last year, but two years in a row would really be tempting the hockey gods. Oh, I certainly agree. Tempt ye not the hockey gods. Last year, though, it was only three teams for 3rd and 4th; this year, it's six teams for 3rd and 4th, so bacby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Jim HylaBump, updated. We better hope Colgate can do it tomorrow, otherwise Union losing to Brown or Yale? That's assuming we sweep next weekend. Sure would have been nice if Clarkson had helped. Go 'gate. Union losing to (or only picking up 3 points vs.) Yale and Brown on the road? I don't think that's anywhere close to outside the realm of possibility, to ever so slightly anti-woof. AvashScersk '97Trotsky Final standings: 29 Cornell 28 Princeton 27 Clarkson 27 Union 26 Harvard 26 Quinnipiac Which would be a new (dubious?) record for lowest points to garner the 1st seed in the playoffs. Cornell and Harvard finished tied for first with 29 points in 1973 -- the only ECAC season where no team reached 30 points. I suppose I should have limited my comment, but that wby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: St. Lawrence post-game - 16 years ago
Now, just for kicks and giggles, I was sifting through the ol' hockey-l Archives a week or so ago and found something that tickled me. It is now germane: Scroll down through Bill Fenwick's (ever readable and copious) notes to the Cornell-Clarkson contest. Note that people have been complaining about the Clarkson band's drum-drum-drumming for a long time. Read about the only threatened uby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: Hey Band! - 16 years ago
metaezra Would anybody know how the Cornell Yell should sound? I imagine it would be slow-slow (Cor-nell), I... fast-fast-fast (yell-yell-yell), slow-slow (Cor-nell). But I might be entirely off base. Well, that's the indication from the rhythm in "Carnelian and White."by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Hey Band! - 16 years ago
RichHI guess I'd describe it as "vaudevillian" in nature. Certainly 'tis! Let's get out the ban-joes and mandolines! If the music for the verse of "My Old Cornell" resembles any other Cornell song, actually, I would pick the verse of "Fight for Cornell." Similar chromatic lower-neighbors and all that. Indeed, the text of the verse actually apes a different Coby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Hey Band! - 16 years ago
David HardingIIRC, the tune for the verse is stolen from a Civil War era song, "Tenting Tonight on the Old Campground." I am sorry, but I must disagree. MYOC and "Tenting Tonight" bear little if any resemblance. "Cornell," or "The soldier loves his gen'ral's fame" (SOC, 24), a favorite of Clubbers from the 40s and 50s, shares the opening rising sixthby Scersk '97 - Hockey
The End Is Near, for Tim Thomas is an NHL All-Star. - 16 years ago
What has always been a cherished memory for me, him shattering his stick over our goal after losing to us at Lynah in his (and my) senior year, becomes burnished. What was Schadenfreude has become meta-Schadenfreude. Tim-motherf******-Thomas.by Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: Hey Band! - 16 years ago
Chris '03I've always liked that our band is one of the only ones around that consistently respects the rule and that our fans are generally good enough at home and on the road to sustain cheering without percussive help. Yes. To my mind, this discipline has always, for us, been a matter of pride. Bands that trail over into play are incompetent and incompetently led.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Hey Band! - 16 years ago
finkShardZAs for the words, I would personally post them somewhere if people wanted them, either in a thread on the forum, or on some other website. Would appear that Mr. Hayes beat you to it. Trivia time....who knows the verses to myoc and not just the refrain? Specifically, me; generally, Glee Clubbers. Re: Union Postgame - 16 years ago
krose I'm specifically not talking about seasons prior to 2004. I was thrilled with Schafer for the 1996-2003 seasons. He was a god among men. And so forth. Of course, Jamie Russell leaving was the big change after 2003, and Michigan Tech's power play immediately got better after he arrived, but it's also at times been similarly anemic to ours over the last few years. So I guess it must bby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Chris '03 I think the Eternally Realistic Army is misunderstood as the Always Positive Brigade by the success-spoiled undergrads of roughly classes '05-'08. I find your ideas intriguing and would like to join your organization. I think if we don't have wholesale departures like prior to 2007, we'll usually be OK. Re: Union Postgame - 16 years ago
As Tom said, the break out and power play continue to be frustrating, but, hey, they've always been frustrating. I can't begin to tell you how frustrating the break out and power play were in the McCutcheon years... I'll go with the other side of Tom's comment regarding "wasting talent": I don't really think this team is all that talented, top to bottom. The four members of the seby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Union Postgame - 16 years ago
Doug '08This team is not going anywhere. ...although luckily the "parody" in the ECAC now is such that the overall quality of play is sufficiently poor to think that another trip to Albany might not be totally out of the question... So, I guess Albany is nowhere? There were years in the past when we were happy to make the playoffs! Really, perfect example of a spoiled fby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Union Postgame - 16 years ago
Really, past results are not the best indicator of future performance, as we're so often reminded. If the team wins their next game, they're doing better in league than last year. Win the next two games, and they're doing better than '06. Go on a tear, win the next eight, and they've matched '05. Yeah, they're not '03, but so what? nr53KeithK Hey, I'm an engineer. I'm not supposed to know how to count! As the punchline to one of my favorite engineering jokes goes: The engineer looked at the math problem (1 + 1 = ?) and said "2... no wait, better make it 3" Continuing with the theme of such jokes and how many asterisks I used and why, my favorite engineering joke punchline is, "Well, eventually I'll beby Scersk '97 - Hockey
ECAC Tiers - 16 years ago
If you look at John's ECAC Bradley-Terry on TBRW, the tiering of the league at this point is quite evident: I would say there are three tiers--high, mid, and low. Clarkson is alone at the top, there are a mess of teams in the middle, and then Brown, Dartmouth, Colgate, and Union are in a "league of their own." The two teams with split identities seem to be St. Lawrence and us:by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Harvard's new aid plan - 16 years ago
RobbScersk '97 Well, no, continuous and continuously differentiable aren't the same thing. I do want smooth functions... We've got, what, six tax brackets now? I guess that's a bit smoother than three, but it still seems screwy to me. Why don't we just choose some nice exponential function and be done with it... I know they're not the same thing. That's why I said "Sure (meaningby Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Harvard's new aid plan - 16 years ago
RobbDeltaOne81 Hmmm? Tax brackets don't have the discontinuities that you were speaking of. Its only the amount above that bracket's threshold that gets the higher rate, so its a continuous function. Well, sure, but it's not continuously differentiable, and that has clearly led to no end of confusion for the average taxpayer! (yes, I know you said the same thing.
