Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Classy... - 14 years ago
KeithKAnneDVMSo much for the moon... Oh no! Won't destroying the moon unleash cosmic destruction? Man's civilization will be cast in ruin! Might be worth it for a fabulous Sunsword. Wow. And I had just about convinced myself that I had hallucinated Thundar and his wacky friends all those many Saturdays.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: ECAC's moving to Atlantic City in 2011 - 14 years ago
imafrshmnUugh. Lame venue in an inconvenient city. It's a matter of perspective. Atlantic City is an hour and a half by train from 30th Street in Philly. There are non-stop flights from Boston (Spirit), Toronto (Westjet), and Atlanta (AirTran). So for those of us who live a bit further to the south (or will be living a bit further to the south), Atlantic City seems pretty convenient. I wby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Boardwalk Hall looks beautiful. Just over 10,000 for hockey seems about right. I call Section 203.by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: Decade in Review - 14 years ago
KillerJosh '99RichHI nominate this thread as the worst of the decade. Which decade? I nominate the "naught" decade, as in, "it naught have ever existed" Which reminds me of my favorite decade nickname that never, or (I suppose) hasn't yet, caught on: "The Naughty Aughties."by Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: Big Red Hoops Schedule Update - 14 years ago
KeithKChris '03Jordan 04You guys are not appreciative enough of the good news. We have been playing way too many teams without names in unnamed arenas lately. This mystery "name" addition to our schedule is a welcome addition, and I for one eagerly anticipate the announcement! Didn't name lose to brom last year? Our SOS is bad enough as it is... Yeah, but unnamed lost at Ylae. Bby Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: WSJ Ivy League Sports Article - 14 years ago
I think that the Ivies are quite competitive in every sport beyond basketball and football, the big-money sports of college athletics. The author cites those twenty years since the Harvard national championship in hockey: what about the 19 years, from the standpoint of 1989, between Harvard's championship and our 1970 championship? cbuckserCraig Adams of the Penguins went to Harvard. Also, the Hurricanes are owned by Peter Karmanos, father of Adams's college teammate. That organization has Harvard Men (asst. GM Jason Karmanos & color commentator Tripp Tracy). Man... you always wonder where a sieve like that ends up. Mostly due to the Karmanoses: Go Pens. Eliminate the Suckicanes. KP '06Liz98Although several nice shots of the band! All 25 of them. Thank the NCAA for their absurd rules regarding number of instruments at a home outdoor game in a mostly-empty football stadium. And give an assist to Athletics for enforcing a rule that doesn't exist. Re: 2010 Frozen Four tickets Drawing Held - 15 years ago
KeithKI can see how ice quality can be an issue. But Scersk's initial comment realted to sight lines. He's explained and although I think his comparison of basketball/hockey arenas to baseball/football stadiums is pretty weak (multi-use baseball/football places are much, much worse) I guess I sort of see his argument. The crossing of baseball architecture with that of any other sport is anatheby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: 2010 Frozen Four tickets Drawing Held - 15 years ago
KeithKScersk '97Must college hockey slavishly imitate college basketball, even though the two are completely different sports that lend themselves to completely different stadiums/arenas? (To my aesthetic sense, the notion of a mixed-use basketball/hockey arena is as idiotic as a mixed-use football/baseball stadium.) Explain? Maybe it's just because I'm not a basketball fan but I don't see muchby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: 2010 Frozen Four tickets Drawing Held - 15 years ago
I wonder if those prime seats will be "near" the action. You know, like these ones for the UConn students. The NYTimes Some of the worst seats were close to the floor, in the rows directly behind the baskets where students sat. Because the court was raised a couple of feet, television cameras and other baseline obstructions blocked their views. At the start Saturday, a security gby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell Hockey in 2009-2010 - 15 years ago
ugarteHonestly, I couldn't see the 2009 Cornell team skating with either of those squads. Cornell 2003 would have been fine because they would have slowed these teams to a crawl and those shots, as quick as they are, would have been blocked before they reached the goal. I agree and disagree. I agree that the 2009 team that we saw probably could not skate with BU (as our troubles against Yaleby Scersk '97 - Hockey

With the Frozen Four over, I think it is time to start looking ahead to next year. Let's get this topic moving again. However frustrating it was for it to be them instead of us, and however unsuccessful they turned out to be in the end, I was encouraged by Miami's run to the title game. For more than a few moments during the final, I could squint my eyes in a particular way, disregard the naby Scersk '97 - Hockey

billhoward(You mentioned that Eastern teams won back to back in 1971 and 1972. Didn't an Eastern team also win in 1970?) And Miami of Ohio isn't exactly the West. They're in the west as much as Notre Dame and Michigan are. The CCHA, CHA (I guess), and WZHA are in the west, and the ECAC, Hokey Least, and AH are in the east. How else could an Air Force skater be an Eastern All-American? (Ofby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: Frozen Four - 15 years ago
I hope our defensemen are watching the championship intently. As Melrose is highlighting, when Miami clogs the shooting lanes, the BU defensemen stop, reset, and then fire a wrister just wide of the net into traffic, hoping for deflections. Our D need to do that.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: TBRW Awards - 15 years ago
CowbellGuyJim HylaJeff Hopkins '82I'm tired of beautiful skaters who can't score. At this point, they could skate like my 80 year old father, as long as they can put the puck in the net. So 13 goals, 35 points, a point per game, our top scorer, and instrumental in our end of game comebacks in the playoffs isn't good enough? I'd take many more beautiful skaters like that. Nope. Seriously.by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: Bracket Predictions - 15 years ago
ugarteBeeeej the last time we were knocked out in the first round was 1996, when we barely lost to Lake Superior State in their last gasp on the national scene (they lost to Vermont in the quarters the next day). Re: Bracket Predictions - 15 years ago
Interesting, of course, interview with the committee chair. One of the resistances the chair mentions regarding flipping teams between bands is the last change advantage. It occurs to me, what would be so bad about bracketing #1 vs. #3 and #2 vs. #4 if it makes sense? You flip Princeton and Miami, as CHN (I'll assume adamw) suggests, and the brackets are (with the "atmosphere" moby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: Cornell-Yale ECAC championship postgame - 15 years ago
ChipJI really think Coach needs to rethink his philosophy on PP. During the game I had just observed to my friends that they need to stop passing so much around the perimeter and especially focus on more play at the net and less one-timers, most of which were blocked or way off net. Agreed. This necessary facet of the game is one that Whitney seems to have already mastered. He seems to knowby Scersk '97 - Hockey
