Regarding cornelldavy's post defending the Sun: OK everyone, let's pile on! What you're essentially saying is that something is better than nothing, which is true in this case, but that doesn't mean the something is acceptable. The Sun sports section can be, and in the past was, much better than it's been recently. With the success of the hockey program, attention is focused that muchby CUlater 89 - Hockey

Given the relative student apathy for most things athletic at Cornell (except hockey), they probably can't get students to cover sports. The coaches and the players tend to remember the better reporters. Schafer has good memories of certain reporters from when he was an assistant at Cornell, as does Nieuwendyk. There was some excellent writing in the late 80s and early 90s from the likes of Riad El-Dada '86, Jeff Lampe '89, Toby Dorsey '89 and Jeremy Schaap '91 -- stories that won the Sun some awards. Re: for those thinking of buying the i2sports feed - 19 years ago
For many years, I found that I enjoyed hockey more on the radio than on TV, because on the radio the announcers knew they had to go the extra mile to describe what was happening (or maybe I've just convinced myself of that, because I was reduced to listening to the Islanders Cup victories on my transitor radio since we didn't have cable, let alone Sportschannel, back then). He can't make Varteressian a captain if he isn't sure that he's going to play every week, which was the case after last season (although the team votes, I believe the votes are steered a certain way).by CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: Moulson: "This is probably the best team I've played on at Cornell" - 19 years ago
Of course, given the relative ease of the schedule this season (knock on wood), I wouldn't be surprised to see a very good record from the team, even if Moulson is wrong. I more or less look at this year as equivalent to 2001-2002 and next season as a likely 2002-2003.by CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: Lockout NHL and an idea - 19 years ago
Although there are a lot of things I like about it, there are several problems at first blush: 1. Arbitration: giving the teams the right to force a player to arbitration won't help keep salaries down; salary arbitration is what has been driving increased salaries in the NHL and MLB already. In the leagues where there is a salary cap (soft NBA, hard NHL), they don't need salary arbitration.by CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: Commissioners' Cup - 19 years ago
It just seems to be a fomalization of the discussions that college hockey fans have anyway. Every year, you see/hear about how one conference is better than the other, backed with evidence from the games played between their respective members. So I think it's college hockey's way of getting in on that discussion to try to drum up a little more excitement/interest, probably with a longer term pby CUlater 89 - Hockey

The center of the top line is a pivotal position (pun intended), and bears much more responsibility than either wing, especially in Schafer's system. (Of course Schafer wants to have balanced lines, with respect to experience; that's typical in college hockey.) It's one thing to put a freshman in there when you know there's an excellent chance he'll be up to the task; you can't say that about eby CUlater 89 - Hockey
