Re: Line-up? - 19 years ago
You're proposing that the center of the top line be someone (Pegoraro/Scott) who is considered a question mark?! Why would you want to enter the season knowing that there is a good chance your top line won't stay together all year? Also, after the season Gleed had last year, there's no way he's not in the top 6.by CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: Ticket Line - 19 years ago
I'm not positive if I remember all the details correctly, but I think what Age is suggesting is similar to what was done in the late 80s, pre- Internet and e-mail. I think they just announced (in the Sun and on the radio), more than a week in advance, when tickets would go on sale and that people who wanted to do so could line up around the outside of Lynah. The line was policed, with random liby CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: New College Sports Network - 19 years ago
This is likely bad news in the long run. CSTV's success obviously prompted ESPN to copy it. With the resources it has behind it, ESPNU will likely outprice CSTV (and also be better distributed), leading to the folding of CSTV or purchase by ESPN (like with the Classic Sports Network). CSTV, at the least, has shown an interest in college hockey, probably because they knew they wouldn't have greby CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: [OT] Who won lacrosse gold medal in Athens Olympics? - 19 years ago
I don't think there is anything wrong with team sports in the Olympics; but team sports or other sports in which the teams or same individuals compete on a regular basis outside of the Olympics makes me uncomfortable. E.g. tennis -- it's the same touring pros who play week-to-week, many of whom are at the US Open this week. Calling the weekly tourney "The Olympics" doesn't make it spby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: [OT] Olympic gold medal flap vs. Fifth Down game - 19 years ago
According to Bob Costas, the "discrepancy" between the verbal and written complaints was that the written complaint by the officials was signed, but was blank, leading many to assume there was some agenda on the officials' part to cause trouble for Peirsol (who had earlier challenged a Japanese swimmer's victory by contending that he employed an illegal dolphin kick in one of the breastby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: [OT] Olympic gold medal flap vs. Fifth Down game - 19 years ago
I agree with what Al wrote in his last paragraph. It's important to distinguish between what the gymnastics officials should do here and what Hamm's obligation might be. The gymnastics officials' employees were the ones who made the mistake and I would be perfectly fine with awarding a second gold medal, if that's what the governing body decides is appropriate to make up for its mistake. But Hby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: [OT] Olympic gold medal flap vs. Fifth Down game - 19 years ago
Hamm's situation is not as clear cut as the Fifth Down (although even that wasn't totally clear cut). In the Fifth Down game, if the ball had been turned over on downs as should have happened, the game would have been over, as there were three seconds to go after the fourth down play. Baring a fumble on the last snap, that would have been it. For Hamm's situation, the incorrect score came beby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Will this team improve over last year? - 19 years ago
I agree with Cowbell Guy, plus clearly Schafer had success without a true sniper in 2002-2003 and 2001-2002, so I expect he wants to continue that approach (ideally, a four-line team). On the other hand, if you can play tic-tac-toe with the puck and keep it away from the other team, that tends to work rather well (see, e.g. the Soviet/Unified Olympic hockey teams and Harvard in the '80s). Re: Will this team improve over last year? - 19 years ago
Whether we can get an at-large bid will also be subject to how other teams perform. For example, if we finish second in the league and lose in the ECAC semis, and the first place team, with a superior out of conference schedule/record also doesn't win the ECAC playoffs, that'll be one less at-large spot for which we might be eligible. The same rule applies to upsets in other conference tournameby CUlater 89 - Hockey

I'm sorry but drawing a conclusion after just one season as to whether recruits have panned out is ridiculous. Other than McKee, I don't think any of the freshmen were being counted on to lead the team at their positions.by CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: Reason #586 that Schafer rocks - 19 years ago
It's worth noting that, other than the two stretches that Greg mentioned, I think the only other time Cornell finished at .500 or above for as many as five consecutive seasons was under Brian McCutcheon '71 (1988-1992). Of course, the ECAC is a vastly different league, relative to the rest of the nation, now than it was back then. ECAC teams have reached the Frozen Four in only two of the pastby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Correction - 19 years ago
But Vanini also scored a game-tying goal against Harvard at Lynah in the regular season, off a face-off with a few seconds to go, back when anything other than a loss by Cornell was unexpected (2/9/91). Other Nichols alums include Peter Ciavaglia (Harvard; IMO, best player on 1989 NCAA champion), Scott Thomas (Clarkson), Ryan Sittler (Michigan and son of Darryl) and Jeff Schulman (Vermont; scoby CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: Next year's line-up - 19 years ago
Schafer's goal is to have all four lines capable of scoring consistently. He wants the Abbotts to produce more, so I don't think he'll put Sawada with them (although they played well with Hornby, they should be able to produce like a real second line with someone like Hynes). Also, do you think he'll have his captain playing on the third line? Can Knoepfli play center (with Moulson and Bitz)?by CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Miracle on Ice - 19 years ago
I find the reply to be not totally complete. Arthur Kaminsky '68, the well-known sports agent, represented Brooks and the hockey team. My recollection is that he was a featured character in the Made-for-TV movie about the 1980 team that starred Karl Malden, and that he may have had a role in the coach and team selection process. I know for sure that he had dinner with Brooks and Dryden the nigby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: McKee wasn't eligible for draft? - 19 years ago
cbuckser: You weren't exactly wrong; McKee and Gleed were free agents, in the sense that every undrafted player playing in North America is a free agent from the time after the last draft until the start of the following NHL/MJHL season. And technically, 18-, 19- and 20- year olds are still draft-eligible (for the following draft). The "overage" cutoff (i.e. when you are no longer eby CUlater 89 - Hockey

Under Section 8.9(b)(i) , a 20-year old, who is undrafted in the June draft, can sign with any team up until the start of the NHL season. Similarly, under Section 8.9(b)(ii) , a player younger than 20 who is undrafted in the June draft, can sign with any team up until the start of the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League season.by CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: Donato to coach Harvard, it seems. - 19 years ago
Donato's totals were down because he got hurt his junior year and missed much of the season. See Donato was considered the next Lane MacDonald by the coaching staff during his sophomore year (when Harvard won the NCAAs). A good skater and great passer and finisher (he played point on the "world-class" power play in 1988-89), he fit the mold of the ideal player that Cleary recruitby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Harvard's arrogance - 19 years ago
McCutcheon had a lot of experience, having been the head man at Elmira for six seasons, where he was the NYS coach of the year and led the team to the top ranking in NCAA Division III. And it actually worked out very well, for the first five seasons, until the University admissions offices changed their approach for reviewing athletes.by CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Harvard's arrogance - 19 years ago
Donato was considered a coach-in-waiting back when he played at Harvard. He and his family are well-regarded and fondly remembered in the New England area, from high school, Harvard, the Olympics and the B's. Harvard's successful seasons from the mid-80's on principally came from recruiting, not coaching. And in any case, Tomassoni was doing most of the coaching, even when Cleary was officiallby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: (OT) Reunion - 19 years ago
To continue the "on-topic" news, I went by Lynah during reunion, Saturday PM. Three players were out front, pedaling on stationary bikes, enjoying the weather and flexing for women. I wandered into the locker room. The stereo was blasting some heavy metal music. I haven't been in there since Schafer took over, so I immediately noticed that every locker had a trophy won by past Corneby CUlater 89 - Hockey
