Re: Tampa Bay wins the cup - 19 years ago
I don't think Adam is suggesting that the NHL move franchises the Europe. His point was that the talent level likely was not diluted, since at the same time that expansion occurred and the number of job increased, there has been an influx of workers from outside North America, workers who generally are more skilled than the North Americans.by CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Tampa Bay wins the cup - 19 years ago
My criticism is that the league expanded to too many non-traditional cities simultaneously (where simultaneous is defined by the amount of time it takes to know whether a hockey market can be grown in the city in question). Simultaneous expansion has nothing to do with success within an individual market, unless two new markets are located in proximity. It seems to me that simultaneous expansby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Tampa Bay wins the cup - 19 years ago
I agree with the point about TV viewership; some of that seems to be because hockey on TV is nowhere near as exciting as in person; or because the regular season is so long and lacks the passion of the playoffs; or because it's hard to follow the action or plays away from the puck on TV. I will note, however, that Dallas is consistently in the top 10 in attendance despite not being a "natby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Tampa Bay wins the cup - 19 years ago
MSG is widely available because they locked up the Yankees all those years ago and continues to benefit from pricing it imposed on cable operators back then. In addition, they can tell Time Warner, advertisers and others "we're paying lots of money to the Rangers and Knicks for their TV rights so we need to charge you a little more per subscriber or per commercial to cover that cost".by CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Tampa Bay wins the cup - 19 years ago
In fact, the little blurb about the Rangers (if you follow the link on the page Age cited) indicates that the team's value is due to the richest cable contract in the league (with its own parent company -- an easy way to drive up the value of an asset and justify forcing cable customer/competitors to pay more for MSG Network).by CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Tampa Bay wins the cup - 19 years ago
Chill out Kyle. Tampa Bay was 12th in the league in attendance during the regular season, only about 200 fans per game behind your beloved Rangers. And about 1200 fans per game more than Calgary.by CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Cornell alumni in the Pros June 2004 - 19 years ago
AHL teams, at least, take the playoffs very seriously, as do their parent clubs. It is a source of pride within NHL organizations when their minor league affiliates win the championship. So I wouldn't be surprised if Bâby got moved down to the fourth line to accomodate a player coming back from the NHL.by CUlater 89 - Hockey

Dave gave a great summary. I would add that even just walking around gives you a chance to remember back to undergrad days, although there are so many changes on campus that you'll find yourself trying to figure out what's different (that include on campus, in Collegetown and even downtown). You'll also see faces that are somewhat familiar but you can't really place anymore -- people from yourby CUlater 89 - Hockey

I don't think the UMinn/UMD hockey example is appropo since up until those programs really got started, it was UNH and Providence that dominated women's hockey and then Harvard and to a lesser extent Dartmouth.by CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: [OT] What Is the Rarest Single-Game Feat in Sports? - 19 years ago
My recollection was that the Cornell-Penn game was national and was scheduled in that time slot prior to the season, mostly because the two schools had tied for first place in the league the prior season and had battled for the title in the last game two seasons before that.by CUlater 89 - Hockey

In an effort to get to 50 posts: Members of the CFA are far closer to the football hiring process than any of us, or the athletes. And several have told me how the NFL guys played us, just as the CFA members advised Andy would happen, but he chose to ignore (or take) the risk.by CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: Sun interview with Noel - 20 years ago
Part of Andy's job is to attend games/matches of all varsity sports, so I wouldn't exactly consider his attendance to be so extraordinary. Anybody who followed the football coach hiring process, as I know you did, can't possibly believe he handled that well. That was his most important hire to date and he brought disgrace on the school and the program by letting himself get played by Trestmanby CUlater 89 - Hockey

As Bill Howard said, it's not a "school paper", although it is staffed with students. And being 18-22 is not an excuse for blatantly ripping off a major media outlet. It isn't necessary to do that to put out a quality (or award-winning) newspaper now, just as it wasn't back in the late '80s, early '90s when I worked there/had input into content. Mostly, I'm talking about the Bloc, whby CUlater 89 - Hockey
Re: Sun interview with Noel - 20 years ago
The problem with this interview, as with other things that have appeared in the Sun sports section, is that it is "derivative" of an idea used at another media outlet (in this case, Page 2 at espn.com, where they run half-serious, half-fun "10 Questions with..." interviews from time to time, which include such questions as who would you have dinner with, from anyone in historyby CUlater 89 - Hockey

Thank goodness it wasn't Danis; Why? Is it a bad thing to show recruits that the ultimate national recognition can come to those who play in the ECAC? Would it be a bad thing to show fans of the other conferences that the national media believes (rightly or wrongly) that the player with the best performance in a season played in the ECAC? [OT] Freshman room assignments - 20 years ago
Any suggestions/anecdotes on how to get a good room assignment/roommate as a freshman? My cousin will be a freshman next year and she is working on filling out the housing information. If you put down that you're neat, does that mean you'll end up with an obsessive neat freak as a roomie? What about the question about what hours you typically keep? Does the housing office tend to ignore thatby CUlater 89 - Hockey

Re: O.T. New Daily Sun web site - 20 years ago
The interesting thing about that is that there isn't any sort of official or unofficial policy about the number of columnists of a particular political bent. But in the late '80s, what happened was that some conservative voices didn't like what they perceived to be the liberal voice of the official editorials, and so decided the quit the paper. At the time, some gravitated to the new Cornell Reby CUlater 89 - Hockey
