Thanks for the thoughts so far. Keep 'em comin'. In general, I try to forget losses. I really can't remember many outside of the playoffs. (I still have nightmares of LSSU's Aldredge darting from the penalty box to corral a gift breakaway puck and put it home.) Save one. Cornell vs. Clarkson in the Late 60s - 19 years ago
Perhaps this isn't the best time to bring this subject up, considering that it will probably lead to another flame war, but I was wondering why there was a large gap in scheduled meetings between Cornell and Clarkson during the late 60s, when the two, undoubtedly, were amongst the best teams in the East. Re: Why are there no defense cheers? - 19 years ago
During the "Power Kill" season of '96, we would sarcastically yell: "Oh no, not another power play! AAAAAAAHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" I think a whole crowd laughing can be very offputting. I actually like "Two minutes wasted! Clap, etc." Lots of "s"s and "t"s = good for cheering.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Link to Full Almamater - 19 years ago
The consumptive was Jennie McGraw, daughter of John McGraw, the Dryden lumber baron who donated the money for McGraw Hall. Jennie, a friend of Andrew Dickson White, donated the Chimes in 1868. She died of tuberculosis in 1880. Her death, however, came *after* the composition of the Alma Mater, lyrics by Weeks '72 and music (a well-known tune, "Annie Lisle" "by" Smith '74. One could almost imagine the fifth verse performed as a slow diminuendo to a sudden fortissimo on "Hail, all hail, Cornell!" Excellent analysis, John, especially the link to Annie Lisle, that cheery song about an ill-fated consumptive. Musicologist approved!by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Oh, I don't know--Norton and Levasseur, though certainly not one-dimensional "enforcers," certainly picked up the slack after Schafer's graduation. Did anyone else catch this? Check out the question from "Joe B." in Boston: I don't care that he was a Harvard goalie. I don't mind that he wrote a book called "Crimson in Triumph." And the most unlikely player on that list? Geoff Lopatka, hands down. I will always remember the picture from the Sun of Lopatka, post overtime game-winner, skating away from the goal crouched, as if playing a guitar with his stick. He had a nasty wrister that he would unleash after using a defenseman as a screen. He scored his shortie at Placid against Harvard in '96 using it, as I remembeby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Oh, yeah... duh. I guess I'd hope for CC, then. For me, the great victory in seeding will be to somehow avoid Denver and Wisconsin. Actually, I'll edit myself again. I'd rather avoid CC and Wisconsin and play Denver. We're very good at holding teams off 5x5, but I want to avoid the teams that have similarly good special teams to ours.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
PWR Rank vs. KRACH Rank - 19 years ago
Oh, and since I mentioned it in the other thread, I'll post my simplistic comparison of the two ranking schemes at this moment. For the record, I'm a huge believer in KRACH as a more accurate representation of team strength. So I feel, for example, that Wisconsin being undervalued in PWR is really going to screw someone in the tournament: As of 2/12/05 4:50 PM CST: PWRby Scersk '97 - Hockey

To get pedantic about it, look at this map from the (still in development) Phonological Atlas of the United States: As you can see, a distinct circle around Providence indicates the unheralded Rhode Island accent, wonderfully represented on the Family Guy. Lines - 19 years ago
This topic was being discussed in the discussion of Ari's column, but I thought I would start a new topic to "center" discussion on this one issue. I think Schafer et al. are still flummoxed as to what the lines should be. I made myself a little chart. Have we compared the attendance numbers for Albany and Lake Placid somewhere? To my mind, transportation links are paramount. Lake Placid was difficult to reach by car or bus, expensive to reach by air, and impossible to reach by rail. Re: Humbling Weekend - 19 years ago
There are always early setback weekends in a successful Cornell season. In 02-03, it was Estero (kind of late on, but that's how good we were); in 01-02, it was an early loss at Harvard in overtime, setting up something better left unsaid but which was karmically redressed; in 96-97, it was a snowy weekend at RPI and Union, ending up in a loss and a tie. Actually, Bochner's recent column, "Ivy League Football Deserves More" , was even worse. Four of my favorites: --"Hey , your recruiter called. He said, 'Oops!'" --Dan Choquette, a Yale netminder, was getting absolutely shelled, but only had four goals scored on him.
