Re: [OT] NCAA Revisits Native American Team Nicknames - 18 years ago
You're misrepresenting what I said. I didn't say that because the Irish are not an oppressed minority they can't be offended. I said that because they are no longer an oppressed minority, the majority of them do not feel offended because there's no "threat" in the nickname. And I'm with you completely on your second point. Racist is in the eyes of the offended, not the offender.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: [OT] NCAA Revisits Native American Team Nicknames - 18 years ago
I can handle it if someone wants to address something that's clearly offensive to an oppressed minority or has racial overtones. Redskins screams of this. Indians or Braves less so, but I'll accept the need for the change. Celtics and Fighting Irish would have 70 years ago, except now that the Irish are not an oppressed minority, the names aren't really offensive and the issue goes away. Buby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: Absolutely... - 18 years ago
Bertrand's resignation was very likely of the "strongly encouraged" variety. According to some friends of mine who were close to the team at the time, there was significant discontent with him from the team members. One person actually told me the sentiment on the team was "Dick Bertrand...before he dicks you." Also, while they were only a year or two away from the ECAC cby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: DC's Frozen Four bid - 18 years ago
He's right there's nothing around the arenas. I remember between games in Buffalo trying to find anything that was open - and that area WAS close to things. That may have soured him on the thought of the distance to downtown. Or he may be picking DC so nobody will accuse him of being a homer (like he's done for playpoff picks). But you can get to things in Philly easily by subway. And you doby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: [LAX] Road Trip for Cornell/Duke QF? - 18 years ago
I'll be there. It's only a 70 minute drive - I'd better go. I don't expect tickets will be a problem. I assume they're holding it in the footbal stadium, which holds 27,000+. I'd think the NCAA would shit themselves it they got that many for a regional.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

We said it in March, and we can say it now: if you can't beat ______, you don't deserve to move on. The boys need to stomp Towson. Prove the smoke-filled assholes wrong. I can't make Saturday's game 'cause I'm on vacation in Texas. If we win this weekend, I'll be at Princeton.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

High in the polls, solid record, a couple of early losses that we could probably win now, weak strength of schedule. Sound familiar? Expect a 5 or 6 seed unless we slip up with Hobart.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: Your choice for captain? - 19 years ago
Because of the ability to "discuss" with the officials, I always thought they 1) tried not to give C's and A's to players on the same lines and 2) tried to have at least one forward and 1 d-man. If that holds, Moulson and Gleed would be tagged. I'd guess an Abbott as well.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: CCHA's Brand-Spankin'-New Playoff System - 19 years ago
There will be that chance of a quarterfinal upset, though, where now the top two teams got a QF bye. That and all teams at the tourney are playing on relatively equal rest. Plus more games means more chance of injuries.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: How fast can you shoot a lacrosse ball? - 19 years ago
Some differences: When a long-stick hurls a lax ball, it's rarely fully overhand. There's usually a lot of sidearm action. Jai alai balls are often thrown fully overhand. Maybe the effort of keeping the ball in the crosse causes the thrower to take something off the throw, where a jai alai cesta is shaped that the pelota tends to stay in it so maybe they can put everything into the throw.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: [OT LAX] Cornell lacrosse vs. Princeton - 19 years ago
The hockey conferences have all been formed just for hockey and don't really have any affiliation with existing conferences (now that the ECACHL is not really with the ECAC). In lax, several of the conferences are existing conferences. Therefore, it's hard for an independent, especially a D-III playing up, to get into a conference if they're not a member for other sports. Re: Where are they now? - 19 years ago
I can only speak for Cook's status. The Flyers are reasonably deep at defense, but DesJardins is old and creaky, and Ragnarsson is getting there. The phantoms list 8 D-men on their roster. One is Pitkanen, who is playing with the Phantoms during the strike even though he played the whole year with the Flyers, and another is Seidenberg who played up and down all last year, but is expectedby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
