Re: Best time to pull the goalie - 12 years ago
dbilmes I'm reading the new book by Jon Wertheim, Scorecasting, which uses statistics to dispel many sports axioms. One of the main premises of the book is that coaches are afraid to make controversial calls such as going for it on fourth down in football, even if the statistics back them up, because they're not commonly accepted by fans and the media (i.e. Bill Belechick). According to the book,by Jacob 03 - Hockey

phillysportsfan I think your right on the coin flip because in 2007-08 Cornell,Harvard,Dartmouth womens teams all finished with the same record and all the split their season series so they had some kind of a drawing and Cornell got the first round bye to play the winner of Harvard,Dartmouth for the NCAA bid. KeithK RichHI think the one thing I believe in that staunch Sabermetricians don't is "streakiness." Timing, muscle memory, and physical well-being can come in and out of sync, I've felt that feeling where the ball seems like a beach ball, or I know I'm hitting the sweet-spot every time. I believe in "streakiness" more than I do "clutch." I totally agree with you. Tby Jacob 03 - Hockey

Josh '99Maybe "unbalanced" isn't the word I mean. I agree with a schedule that has teams playing more games against other teams in their division than against teams in other divisions. I don't agree with a schedule that has the Mets in competition with the Phillies for a playoff spot and the Mets play six games a year against the Yankees and their $200M payroll while the Braves get toby Jacob 03 - John Spencer Is Dead

Give My Regards Unlike the ECAC, teams in the WCHA don't all play the same schedule; they play some league opponents twice and others four times. So who would be more deserving of a bid -- a team that finished high in the standings but benefitted from playing some weak foes four times, or a team that finished lower but played some heavyweights four times?Obviously, the answer is a convoluted sysby Jacob 03 - Hockey

Re: Women's Hoops - 16 years ago
A bit of a damper on an otherwise great night for Cornell sports... The Women's Bball team lost a heartbreaker to Dartmouth tonight, 46-44. ESPN also reports a Harvard win, so Cornell and Harvard are now tied at the top of the standings with Dartmouth a game back. Re: Recruiting and Financial Aid - 16 years ago

Re: Recruiting and Financial Aid - 16 years ago
Beeeej It's odd because that's not generally how endowments work. Cornell's current endowment of $5 billion doesn't cough up $250 million in spendable cash every year that Cornell may spend however it sees fit. The overwhelming majority of the money is in restricted endowments.
