Game Two: Cornell 2 North Dakota 1 FINAL
Posted by: ebilmes (---.adsl.snet.net)
Date: November 29, 2008 08:16PM

2 15:07 Cor M. Kennedy sh 3 (Seminoff 4)

3 14:37 NoDak Hextall pp 5 (Miller 7, Genoway 13)
3 16:37 Cor Greening pp 4 (Barlow 4, B. Nash 2)

SOG were 30-23 Cornell.

Cornell improves to 5-1-2, NoDak 5-8-1.

Evan Barlow named player of the game. Edit: The second Cornell goal is now being given to Greening, which seems like the right call based on the replay.

NoDak 1x8 on the PP, Cornell 1x4 with the shortie.

Great result tonight. Let's go red.

Heads up play from M.Kennedy to see an opening and take the shot, instead of going for the pass during the 2 on 1. Same from Seminoff to give the puck up to Kennedy instead of dumping the puck in. Good period overall.

It looked like the Kenedy goal was similar to Jillson's goal last night, beating the UND goalie on the short side.

I am really impressed with how easily UND is moving the puck around on the powerplay. I don't recall seeing nearly as many clean passes on powerplays in quite a long time. We --REALLY-- need to not take any more dumb penalties, because we're playing with fire playing these guys a man down.

Just a quick reminder to anyone who paid the $9.95 for the month of Sioux Sports Network access: the $9.95 renews automatically every month, so you may want to cancel your membership now, while you're thinking about it, unless you plan on watching other Sioux broadcasts, in which case just ignore this.

Yeah, that's what I used tonight as well, but some who didn't have NHL access last night bought the month for both games.

UND passes only look easy because they're playing on Olympic-size ice surface. So there is more room for them to move the puck around.

The games were played on a 200' X 85' surface, just like the one at Lynah.

The Olympic Ice Surface must be UND's version of Dryden/1970.
I'd say it is the Bizarro Undefeated Dryden, as eLF is the only place that knows who Cropper is and the only place that keeps talking about the Olympic sheet at the Ralph.

While not attempting to tear the space-time continuum, the Ralph does have an Olympic-sized practice sheet...

To me it looks alot bigger,it could be the camera angle.Behind the net there is alot more room, the neutral zone might be smaller.

I initially thought that too.

When you consider IIHF ice rink dimensions are 200x100 and North American rinks are 200x85, the only difference might be width, not length, and REA certainly isn't any wider. However, there is no mandatory length between the goal line and the end boards in the NCAA, so it's possible there was in fact more space behind the nets, giving the appearance of larger rink size.

NCAA Rule Book Changes
Rule 1-3 and 1-5. Rink Dimensions. The committee approved:

It is preferred that the goal line be 11 feet from the end boards. Additionally, the preferred size of the offensive zone is 64 feet.

Rationale: The committee believes the NHL standard dimensions are best for NCAA play. However, the committee also realizes the variety in current ice sizes and that some institutions do not control the facility in which they play. Therefore, these are the preferred dimensions, not requirements. USA Hockey also is adopting these preferred dimensions.

UND passes only look easy because they're playing on Olympic-size ice surface. So there is more room for them to move the puck around.

Nope, not true.

The games were played on a 200' X 85' surface, just like the one at Lynah.

Eh I was wrong then, my bad. I heard it here somewhere sometime ago.

But I was watching the CU-NoDak games at the same time as the NHL games (two tvs next to each other) and I really thought that Ralph ice sheet looked bigger than the NHL ice in comparison.

We thought the same thing about it being big ice, just after they'd done the National Anthem. The view from the camera looking across ths ice made it look friggin' wide as hell. Didn't sit well. We immediately thought of that Minnesota game in 2005. Then they went to a shot from above and behind the goal and you could see that it was normal size.

Also the radius of the corners can vary. Very rounded corners might make the offensive zone look smaller. (It has a lot more effect on dump ins.)
