ugarte Al DeFlorio Jeff Hopkins '82 ugarte Nice recap of how our incoming class did in the state wrestling tournaments: SPOILER: They did very well. Nice. Though can someone explain to me how one wrester wins 6 state titles? Last I knew, high school was only 4 years, even in Alabama. You start in junior high school. It is pretty amazing to win that many titles if they aren't wisp-thin. Theby ithacat - Other Sports

billhoward Al DeFlorioAnd 3rd with the media, Quint, and laxmagazine. Maybe a bit premature? Kessenich had Cornell third last week after we beat the #2 team that is now the #10 team. If you're on the bandwagon early, you're a thought leader. You can also hop off earlier after Cornell has a couple close games or a loss. We are not vastly better or worse than if Michigan not Cornell had gotten theby ithacat - Other Sports

I think Stoick grew up playing forward and was converted to defense in Ann Arbor. Sounds like he wanted to move back to forward so went to juniors for a year.by ithacat - Hockey
Re: 2013-2014 Basketball - 10 years ago
CAS Steve inherited a much more difficult situation than Bill. Steve's teams generally improved throughout his tenure, and Cornell went 6-8 in the Ivies in year 4. In year 5 Cornell went 8-6 and finished 2nd in the league. Not sure how Steve's record is relevant in evaluating Bill. I didn't say it was.by ithacat - Other Sports
Re: 2013-2014 Basketball - 10 years ago
CAS Cornell is a combined 37-78 during the Bill Courtney era. Cornell was 32-76 during Donahue's first 4 years, though he was showing improvement. There were then two more losing seasons before Steve had his first winning campaign.by ithacat - Other Sports
Re: 2013-14 Women's Ice Hockey in NC$$ tourney - 10 years ago
Last year, without a men's game, the start time was 1:00. The two years prior started at 2:00 -- each had a men's game, one started at 7:45 and one at 7:00. So says the website... I sure as heck can't remember.by ithacat - Hockey
Re: Virginia @ Cornell lax 3/8/14 - Cor 10-6 end 3rd - 10 years ago
Swampy mountainred margolism Larger margin of victory than last year, too. FWIW. Yep. And FWIW, I think this UVA team is better than last year's team. Knight was fantastic. 62.5% save %! That's one beautiful stat. 50% on FOs and +50% on ground balls is also pretty darn good.by ithacat - Other Sports

Re: 2013-2014 Basketball - 10 years ago
Robb CAS I hope Andy is paying attention. 1 win in last 32 D-1 games. Lose by 40 at home. First thought: Why in the world would Iles be paying attention to basketball? Oh, wait.... Exactly. Who cares about basketball? Seriously, have to pay off DeLuca and possibly recruit a top lax coach at the same time that pressure is increasing on Desko at Syracuse. Courtney might get his last year.by ithacat - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2014 - 10 years ago
mountainred Well, since you asked, both seasons have Hobart, Bingo and Canisius in common. But last year's start included a 19-3 beatdown of Colgate who was coming off a National Quarterfinal appearance and had the prior season's winner of the Tewaaraton and Emmers awards returning. This year's slate includes an OT win over a Michigan team that was 1-13 last year and just lost to High Point. Lby ithacat - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2014 - 10 years ago
This has been a weak schedule and things get interesting starting Saturday. Still the team is 4-0 and congrats on that -- also Kerwick became the 2nd coach to begin 4-0 at Cornell, so congrats to him as well. If the team can continue to win 60% of its FOs and cut down on its first half turnovers...maybe Saturday will be a pleasant surprise.by ithacat - Other Sports
Re: Cornell @ Michigan MLax - the game - 10 years ago
mountainredI'll play devil's advocate for Kerwick. Going 11-17 at Jacksonsville isn't bad considering those were the first two years at D1 for the program. And I think he led Hobart to their last two NCAA appearances and league title. He's probably not the next Richie Moran or Jeff Tambroni, but there are worse coaches. I grant you the team hasn't looked great (not that I watched the UM game)by ithacat - Other Sports
Re: Cornell @ Michigan MLax - the game - 10 years ago
billhoward ithacat If Andy doesn't hire a talented coach the program is going to fall mightily. DeLuca was not recruiting well and team has shown that by struggling to beat two of the weakest teams in the country, and has its hands full with Michigan. First, aren't Cornell fans supposed to run Bill Courtney out of town before turning on Matt Kerwick? We're jumping the gun. Second, we knew there'dby ithacat - Other Sports
Re: Cornell @ Michigan MLax - the game - 10 years ago
So beating Michigan helps Cornell's lax power ranking. That would seem to be telling. Rather be 3-0 than the alternatives, so I can still believe it's early.by ithacat - Other Sports

Re: Andy Iles by the numbers - 10 years ago
Give My Regards Updating a bit: Andy is now tied with Ben Scrivens for most games started by a Cornell goaltender, with 113. He got the career minutes-played record early in the 2/15 game against RPI and now has a career total of 6887:06. Andy also got the career saves record in the first period of last Friday's game at Quinnipiac and now has a career total of 2929. He is also tied with Jby ithacat - Hockey

Rita Patrick Kane certainly did a good impression of a male Cornell hockey player. Ouch. Two missed penalty shots. In one game. That must be why the staff rarely recruits Buffalo.by ithacat - Other Sports
Re: Cornell-Hobart lacrosse opener Sat 1 pm - 10 years ago
semsox Excited for this season. Doesn't have the pressure that last year did. Expect a good effort and a W in the opener. We'll see how the pressure builds during the season. I think the program needs a fresh face to lead it.by ithacat - Other Sports
Re: Recruits 2014 - 10 years ago
RatushnyFanPutting stats from Delbarton and the AYHL U16 LI Gulls next to junior stats is apples and oranges in a big way. Delbarton is a nice school with a nice hockey program (my son goes to Don Bosco, a league competitor that just beat Delbarton) but it doesn't compare to junior hockey. I would guess that Otterman will need some seasoning at a junior program despite his draft ranking, he plaby ithacat - Hockey

Re: WTF, is Lynah empty?! - 10 years ago
Jeff Hopkins '82 Trotsky I've been critical of the crowd this year so in fairness: Lynah was rocking Saturday. A and B sounded as great as they have in years, and the whole crowd did a great job, particularly buoying them up after the second Clarkson goal. Yes and no. A and B were fine. I didn't see much fan participation in D & E, e.g. no newspapers, not many people standing in E, etc.by ithacat - Hockey

Al DeFlorio ithacat Cornell leads Rutgers 13-6 at the break. Grey loses in an uninspired match. Not an impressive first half, other than Garrett.I thought Mike Nevinger looked pretty good, winning 13-2. Should have been given that fall at the end of the period. Nevinger's match was interesting. Looked like he had that pin at the end of the 1st, then almost got pinned, before taking care of hisby ithacat - Other Sports

Towerroad I have no problem charging non students more. Minnesota and ND charge on the order of $35. For most working fans that is a reasonable price. For those prices I would expect improved concessions, a scoreboard than actually showed real time SOGs and video replays, a sound system that didn't broadcast in tongues, more than worn wooden benches, and replenished rolls of toilet paper in theby ithacat - Hockey
Re: Women's Hockey 2014 - 10 years ago
dag14 Women lose to Harvard 1-3 . They looked better than we did in all aspects of the game. I thought Cornell dominated large portions of the game. They did a good job on FOs and outshot Harvard comfortably. The big difference to me was the goalie play.by ithacat - Hockey
