Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: BU Postgame - 16 years ago
Being a hockey-induced manic-depressive, I'm swinging back towards the positive as well, but with some trepidation. Yes, it's the worst start since 2001, but (at 4-3-1) the 2006 team wasn't that much better at this point and they almost went to Milwaukee. The 2005 team was "2 points" better at this point, including gaudy wins over Army and Sacred Heart, losses to Michigan State and Daby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: BU Postgame - 16 years ago
sah67Oh yeah, the powerplay isn't abysmal this year! One less thing to bitch about! What is abysmal, however, is the penalty kill, which is hanging around the high 70s (78.1 after last night). For a team that seeks to play a physically aggressive style, a shut-down penalty kill (a "power kill" is essential. An "average" Cornell penalty kill in the high 80s lets in three fby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Chris '03Scersk '97 Wasn't Knowles also supposed to restore tradition and pride to the program? I was suspicious of the guy when I learned the football team (and band) no longer sings Cornell Victorious after wins. Am I right about that? If so, what the hell? If he's waiting for a championship to sing that we're "champions of all," by that time no one will remember the words. Iby Scersk '97 - Other Sports

Re: Ivy football / Cornell football future - 16 years ago
The Knowlesian Constant turns out to be 3.25 rather than 3.5 as I had previously thought. The Knowlesian Futility Constant remains, however, the same: start the season by going 1-2 or worse against Harvard, Yale, and Brown. Granted, the collective winning percentage of those three teams over the Knowles years is .679, so I suppose we're just performing as well as we should, but it's demoraliby Scersk '97 - Other Sports

Indeed, only the Pep Band does football day trips. Those bus trips are so "exhausting" that it would be very difficult to march right after getting off the bus.by Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell 2 vs. Princeton 3 (3rd Period) - 16 years ago
BeeeejScersk '97If Scrivens steps it up, this team is going to be a lot like '01... ...yup, that's the last Cornell team that opened with two Ls against perennially weak teams. Exactly. There are other patterns at work. '01 was a young team: 5 workman-like seniors, some better juniors, very promising sophomores, and one spectacular freshman. With all that, they couldn't seem to figure outby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell 2 vs. Princeton 3 (3rd Period) - 16 years ago
calgARI '07 The issue is that they don't have the talent or they would have generated more chances and converted on more of the ones they had. Guys like Milo and Romano would have really changed things around for this team but instead, there are guys in scoring roles who are not suited for it. There is an average amount of talent on this team relative to the ECAC. I think they will show resiliby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Fall Championships? - 16 years ago
Things would change if we had a Big Red Train. Does the football team leave on Friday afternoons like the band, or do they leave in the morning? (Either way, I'm sure they arrive in a slightly different state than we used to.)by Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell-RIT postgame - 16 years ago
Well, I was reasonably PG my freshman year ("What are you, ten?", went a bit blue my sophomore year, and then, as many did at Schafer's behest, cleaned up my language for my junior and senior years. You know what? I was on some sort of double-secret Athletics "blacklist" my whole time at Cornell but, guess what, never got kicked out of a game. Keep it clean, but keep it confby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell-RIT postgame - 16 years ago
Chris '03Doug '08It seems that in general the Cornell fanbase is deteriorating. I think it's called being a senior. After the point in your freshman year when you figure out all the cheers, it's strictly downhill from there. Though I am disappointed that it seems there haven't been any real loud mouths in the band in a while. Second.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Fall Championships? - 16 years ago
With our loss and Harvard's and Yale's wins, we are officially eliminated from the Ivy football race. Whee! I wonder on which side of the Knowlesian constant (3.5 wins) we'll fall this year.by Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: Death to the Hyphen - 16 years ago
What about waterborne? Being that it's the kind of compound adjective they're trying to retain, I find dropping the hyphen to be a particularly bad choice there. Why bow to the dumb-asses that don't know what the past participle of to bear is? I'd also prefer waterbed and potbelly, but the latter is most likely due to my rampant consumerism.by Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead

Re: Football: Battle of the 'nells - 16 years ago
Well, since we're parsing, I would've liked to have read "impressions," i.e., things I couldn't get from traditional media outlets--reports on the crowd, gripes about the opposing fans, appraisals of the tailgating. As far as watching the game goes, I had other things to do at that time, which is why I looked around for recaps and came to the forum to read what people had to say aboutby Scersk '97 - Other Sports

I agree with Rich. Generally cleaner and, therefore, more useful. Notice that ICS (Internet Consulting Services) is a local (Syracuse) company. Syracuse, Colgate, Ithaca College, RPI, RIT, and Clarkson are some of their other clients. One hopes that a local company will be more responsive to Athletic's needs.by Scersk '97 - Other Sports

An' yins 'r stupid. Who cares what you sound like playing it? It's the sound of the unified Lynah crowd chanting "Fight! Maim! Kill!" that's the point. I used to love that cheer, and, with the end of the Black Hole cheer screwed up as it is, it used to be one of the few opportunities left to hear that deafening, echoing silence that can happen after a great cheer. TrotskyScrew these teams, where does Cornell finish? There are some IA-IAA match-ups. Doesn't that broaden the set of teams enough to allow us to determine whether Cornell is, say, 307th or 319th? 184 out of 706. Poor Principia...by Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell vs. Sacred Heart Postgame - 17 years ago
Trotsky Now it is possible that the "overconfidence effect" is only displayed in NC games. But I think from the standpoint of the hard evidence above, Schafer's teams have performed fine against weaker opponents, with very few let downs. I haven't looked at the numbers, but I think Trotsky's informed swag that we've performed below standards chiefly vs. "weaker" non-confereby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell 6 Union 0 postgame (12/2/06) - 17 years ago
This is the point where I start fondly reminiscing about goal celebrations that used to go on forever, with relatively slowly-chanted "sieves" that died out on their own (way past seven) and "it's all your faults" that only got going when people got tired of yelling "sieve." Though I sound like a broken record every time I weigh in on this sort of thing, the best course of action has always seemed to me to fight fire with fire: fight (fire) Andy Noel's evil hyper-organization and ass-hatted-ness with good hyper-organization and ass-hatted-ness. Cheer sheets, full of cleanly worded but completely over-the-top cheers, should be placed on all the student benches. Sby Scersk '97 - Hockey
The Crucial Stretch Approacheth - 17 years ago
Since I've been watching Cornell hockey, the weekend before the end of the semester has often been a "lost weekend." Before our recent dominance, you could count on the Big Red to mail it in and head into finals on a down note. While the 1986, 1996, and 1997 championship teams had their lost weekends and pulled it together somehow, less-than-stellar performances on the pre-finals weekby Scersk '97 - Hockey
