Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Arena's men take the pitch on Monday - 17 years ago
Yep, I switched the teams around for the quick comment. It was Portugal vs. los Paises Bajos that I was in a tizzy about instead. I did feel that the Argentines were doing a lot of diving and whining vs. Mexico, whom I felt had the better of play on the day and was sad to see lose. On England vs. Portugal I quite agree: both sides were a mess and it was more a contest to see who would avoidby Scersk '97 - Other Sports

On diving: Wouldn't it be pretty simple for FIFA to video review the games afterwards and start looking for players grabbing their heads when they haven't gotten elbowed and grabbing their shins when they haven't gotten slide tackled? Oh, that's right, FIFA is institutionally against any sort of video replay for games. The thing is, a few yellows handed out *after* games, causing players toby Scersk '97 - Other Sports

nyc94While I don't know who discovered this, there is probably a good chance they were German. Well, we all know there are two things the Germans love: David Hasselhoff and watersport videos. Computers in cars and urea are then the natural solutions to any problem.by Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead

One can imagine the eureka moment when engineers figured out this method of making diesels cleaner: "I don't f-ing know?! At this point, I'd try pissing in the thing if I thought that would work." And science advances.by Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: NY Times article on Cornell's image committee - 17 years ago
Well, the real answer is high-speed rail. Seriously, with first the decline of railroads in America, affecting Cornell through the cessation of passenger service to Ithaca by the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1958, and the more recent decline of small-airport air service, Ithaca and, therefore, Cornell become more and more isolated from the rest of the world. The Lehigh Valley connected Ithaca veby Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead

Is the Princeton audio feed free? I was able to listen to one of their archived games, but there seems to be no indication either way on their site.by Scersk '97 - Other Sports

Well, let's get the bitching out immediately: * Oh geez, we have a weak schedule. * Oh geez, the Niagara Classic again. * Wayne St? Hunh? Are we Clarkson? (Dee-troit represent!) Yep, we'd have to win out, practically, to get a #1 seed. But there's the Holy Cross effect: as Schafer mentioned, teams that do well in their conferences help us in the RPI no matter how "weak" theby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Very intereting indeed. There's no question that Nieuwendyk is and has been one of the more dominant face-off men in the League, and there's also no question that our face-off percentages take a jump when Joe is available for some part-time, part-season volunteer assistant coaching. I'm sure no one here is hoping for an early end to his career, but the Big Red are distinctly helped by his preseby Scersk '97 - Hockey

BeeeejScersk, I guess I just managed to miss you this time. I am as the wind: an unseen, unstoppable force. You may not have seen me, but I was always there... ...it's just that Friday I was feeling crappy and stayed in. RichHIn the end, I think it was a combination of the overall level of competition in the league rising ... and our own team in transition and trying to find itself as a seemingly new era dawns. My great frustration is not with our team, which I think remains ahead of the curve in the ECAC(HL) and NCAA, but with the other ECAC teams. You and I both have been tracking a seeming recruiting changby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Captains / Assistants For Next year?? - 18 years ago
RitaScersk '97In 1997-98, Knopp, at the time a junior, was co-captain with Jason Dailey, a senior. Thanks! I thought Kyle was also a captain his Junior year, thus making Topher a captain as a junior would not be unprecedented. Well... Bâby was a "singular" captain his junior year.by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: Captains / Assistants For Next year?? - 18 years ago
LowellFrankIt's been more or less the norm over the past few years, but I think one captain plus three assistants is a bit much. How about one of each? Two Cs (as was the case in '03)? Just El Capitan (hasn't been done since '96)? BeeeeeeeeejI would not mind seeing, and would not be surprised to see, Scott get the C as a junior. And to cover both angles, is it any surprise that two of our mostby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Scott, to my mind, was definitely brought in as a center, but has been converted to wing. Bitz was brought in as a winger and has been converted to center. Heisenberg has Scott listed as LC: and Bitz as RW: and Paolini as LC:by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Poll (yay) 3/27 - 18 years ago
KeithKNo, the fun of organized sports is the fun of organized sports. I can easily enjoy a game thoroughly at the end of a season when my team is well out of contention. (Case in point: I started watching Cornell hockey in the 92-93 season.) There's a joy in sports that's a lot bigger than whether you have a chance to finish first. Anyone who can't find something to play for once they're elimiby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Poll (yay) 3/27 - 18 years ago
It came about because Clarkson got screwed with an awful seed in the 1991 NCAA tournament. Even though they had turned a double, they had to face Wisconsin in the first round at Walker Arena in Potsdam and then Lake State (very powerful at the time) on the road in the second round. Frankly, I think they just ran out of gas at the Frozen Four, ending up getting crushed by a very good BU team.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Poll (yay) 3/27 - 18 years ago
KeithKOK, I'll explain again. My philosophy is win and move on, lose and go home. Winning the league championship (however it's defined) means you won and have earned the right to move on. It doesn't prove that you're the best team, but that's not exactly the point. I prefer to define the championship such that it's more likely to pick the best team. Thus my preference for RS championship ovby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Re: [OT] Redemption is next door - 18 years ago
Oh, lay off the Swami... He may be a windbag, but his comments regarding Cornell seem to be motivated by a profound (dis)respect, something to which any hockey fan should be able to relate. Anyway, the drivelings of him, his con(cubines)federates, and the Big Boyz are much more entertaining than anything over on Laxpower, except maybe the circularity of the fictitious JHUxxyys.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Clarkson, Game 2 POSTGAME - 18 years ago
Jim HylaScersk '97On Roll: A few years ago, when they hired him, I thought Roll was going to do a great job at Clarkson. Now, I'm not so sure, It's just like Gaudet and Dartmouth: Yeah, I'm sure that Clarkson would be upset if they suddenly started finishing first in the league. After all, then they could start losing in the tourney again. I could never understand this he's not a gooby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Clarkson, Game 2 POSTGAME - 18 years ago
On Hansen: Reasonably well-reffed games except for the quick whistles and a reluctance to call matching minors when appropriate. For the whistles, he's got to learn to let the puck have at least the chance to have hit the ice before whistling. On the goal called off in last night's game, he was screened and could not possibly have known whether Leggio had squeezed the puck. On the matchinby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: 2005-2006 PWR - playoffs edition! - 18 years ago
Just to point out the wacky nature of the PWR, and to return to a topic that someone broached a few weeks ago, I ran JTW's DIY PWR script and changed that MSU loss to a win. If that had happened, we would've been the #1 overall seed in the tournament at this point. What this type of behavior says about the PWR is clear; what this small difference between supremacy and struggle says about ourby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Oh, there was a great amount of hate directed towards Vermont in the 1996 and 1997 seasons, both because of Tim Thomas's generally annoying arrogance and the Catamount fans' dogged representation of the underclass of ECAC hockey fandom. Their cowbell, married to the "Go, Cats, go!"; their pathetic amplified band; the beer guts and woodchuck behavior: everything brought the hate. Vermby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Union Post Game Thread - 18 years ago
I'd like to say Princeton over Clarkson for the only upset of the first round, leaving Dartmouth the dubious pleasure of having to play Princeton in the quarters, and QU over RPI is tempting as well; however, QU and Princeton have both not played so well on the road, and, though Princeton and Clarkson look well matched at first glance, Clarkson's special teams are clearly superior. I agree thatby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ RPI postgame - 18 years ago
Well, only one team--you, Bruno--has nothing to play for Saturday night. Obviously, we're cheering for SLU, Clarkson, and RPI. Both Clarkson and RPI are cheering for us: 1) RPI, obviously, would like to pull ahead of Union. 2) Clarkson loses the three-way tie with RPI and Union but wins the two-way with Union no matter how the top 4 ends up. So, come on, somewhat-Yellowish Knights! Clby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ RPI postgame - 18 years ago
DeltaOne81Of course, I'd also rather play 6/7/8 in the 2nd round than a #5 Harvard or SLU. No matter how poorly we've done against 6/7/8 at the moment. That actually articulates why I feel the distribution of the top seeds doesn't matter that much this year. Yeah, it'd probably be good to avoid Harvard, but, the way things are going right now, any of those 5-8 teams could step up and make forby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ RPI postgame - 18 years ago
If you told me that we'd be missing 3 of our top 5 defensemen at the beginning of the weekend, I'd say that 2 points would be a good result. Well... Let's all stop worrying about the first-round bye. As has been established in other threads, we have a bye. What I have to wonder is did Schafer just say, "Well, we need to get healthy. We have a bye. Re: Dartmouth game - no access?? - 18 years ago
Is it just me? Am I too suspicious? Does anyone else think it's strange that we've had such trouble on weekends where there was a basketball broadcast at the same time? I can just see some boneheaded routing where the hockey feed takes some roundabout path to where the basketball feed is very well connected...by Scersk '97 - Hockey

And, anyway, last time I checked the penalty isn't a five-minute major. This crap gets spewed every year. People should just bring their fish, throw them at the right time, and have fun. And no need for the stupid stuffed animals this year--it just looks messy.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
