Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: How the blip??? (Football) - 21 years ago
I guess we did pull it out in OT, but not by the 31-24 score posted on the wonderful Gametracker (surprised we don't have to pay for that, too). Whoever was manning that apparently didn't realize that the other guy gets a chance to tie (or win) if the team with the ball first in the OT scores. Great win over a very explosive team. Amazing we held them scoreless until the last play of the thiby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

No wonder they think we should pay $7/month to listen to 'em.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: #7 in Hockey According to SI - 21 years ago
So what else is new. Saturday's USA Today scoreboard had Yale beating "Cornell College, Iowa," 50-23, in football. For what it's worth, Becky and Jayson have Cornell in Buffalo, too.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

big red apple wrote: I don't know, Al. Last year, men's basketball notwithstanding, was a very good year for the Big Red. Take a minute to list for us all of Cornell's Ivy League championships for 2001-2002, bra. Don't worry...I know you're busy...it won't take but a second.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Top college sports programs according to SI - 21 years ago
Wonder where we'd rank without the "biggest natural indoor rock-climbing wall." We make up in volume what we lack in Ivy success, I guess. Nice to see you back, Mark.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Seems to me we were picked sixth in the ECAC in one of the preseason polls.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Josh Herman '99 wrote: How about the fact that the football team blows? Surely not nearly as important an issue as finding a way to make a few bucks off the Internet broadcasts. Someone should send Andy Noel the Trustees' report on athletics. He's not even at the tree level, but rather the twig--while the forest burns all around him.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Lynah East tickets for February 15 - 21 years ago
Just learned that Harvard has cut the size of the Cornell Club of Boston block from 600 to 300, as a result of increased season ticket sales. The fair-weather yachties are back, I guess. Better plan ahead accordingly.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: It was only a matter of time... - 21 years ago
According to the pre-game article on CornellBigRed, you need to be a "CollegePass" subscriber to listen to the Internet broadcast of Saturday's Cornell-Yale football game. Only a nitwit would put a program in place that requires you to pay money to listen to a radio broadcast of a Cornell football game.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

That'll probably drop UVM out of 12th place.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

I don't think this affects the TBRW formula, but IIRC the Swedish goalie at Clarkson is not coming back.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Dryden and Tony O. were the All-America goalies (East and West) in 1967. Good year for college 'tenders.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

RichS wrote: John, I have never heard the term "fielder's choice" used to explain a runner advancing in the situation you mentioned, typically a throw from the outfield. Have you actually heard that usage? That advance is simply explained as "he took third on the throw home", for example. Yes, but how does one explain the runner's presence at third base in that tiny littleby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

DeltaOne81 '03 wrote: Actually, that's exactly a fielder's choice. The fielder had the choice to try to throw out the man going to second, or to try to throw out the batter going to first. He chose to get the guy at first. The batter is therefore out on a fielder's choice, which won't count as an at-bat (much like a walk), so that it doesn't count against his average since he deserves credit foby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Surely this is a mistake, and the Rangers were thinking they were signing Leeor Shtrom as a long-overdue replacement for Lou Fontinato.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Unimpressed by the presence of a Brit quarterback, the media picks Cornell to finish seventh in the Ivy League. Yawn.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: OT: Down. Set. Cheery Oh. Hut 1! - 21 years ago
I suppose if one thinks Canada is the place to recruit basketball players then why not go to the UK for a quarterback. Next thing you know Heidelberg will recruit soccer players in Las Vegas and McGill will establish a hockey pipeline from Bermuda.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: Alumni game - 21 years ago
Jason Arnold ('90) and Tom Fox ('71) were the two goalies. I know Tom did not play in college and don't recall Jason. Tom plays in some kind of senior league and was probably MVP.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Alumni game - 21 years ago
According to Mike, there were several former player weddings last Saturday which cut into attendance at the alumni game and reunion. Hockey alumni playing in the game were: Marc Deschamps, Parris Duffus (who played forward/defense), David Francis, Bruce Frauley, Len Jankowski, Brian McMeekin, Bill Perras (1971), Tom Prins, Krzysztof Wieckowski, Pete Chuchmach, Tony Eisenhut, John Ettinger,by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

It's interesting to watch the ballot box slowly being stuffed What's really important is that Mike couldn't be more happy to be out of LP and into Albany.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Alumni game - 21 years ago
For those in the Ithaca area, this summer's alumni game will be this Friday night, the 12th, at 7:30 in Lynah. This year's reunion banquet "honors" the teams from 1975 through 1984, so there should be good representation from that era.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

I suspect dropping the L16 is an attempt to lessen the effect of a Mercyhurst playing (and perhaps winning) its last 16 games against weak MAAC opponents. Should a 16-0 Mercyhurst record against MAAC teams give them an advantage over a Hockey East or CCHA school that finishes out something like 14-2?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
