Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: The New Radio Guy - 21 years ago
Early in my career I interviewed for a job in Moline, but it fell through and we wound up in Peoria instead. Sort of a "six of one, half a dozen of the other" kind of thing. Not much in the Quad Cities but John Deere, Neil. Good luck. It'll be a new adventure after Philly.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Another new "feature" - 21 years ago
In the last week or so the "new" label on thread names persists even after I look at the new postings on the thread (in "threaded" view). It disappears eventually, but after it seemingly "thinks about it" awhile.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

What was that slogan from the spanking of the Tripolitan pirates? Something like "Millions for war, but not one cent for tribute."by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Injury report for OSU - 21 years ago
Schafer is quoted in today's Sun: 'We have a lot of injuries that we sustained. There's probably four guys who will be out of our lineup who were in our lineup against York." Moulson is the only one mentioned by name.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

All of the above, John. And the screw's too small to fit.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Hockey Preview in Sun - 21 years ago
Nope, it wasn't in Kane's book. In a 1995 New York Times article on the 25th reunion of the 29-0-0 team, Pat Putnam wrote: "When the [69-70] season was over, the NCAA said it was considering restricting the number of Canadians--foreigners was the word used--on a team." It never happened, of course.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Hockey Preview in Sun - 21 years ago
Dunno. Makes no sense. That was about the time Cornell's Peter Titanic and Dick Decloe of BU were declared ineligible because their Junior teams paid some of their educational expenses. Also, in 1973 the NCAA placed Cornell on probation after two potential recruits (they never applied and Cornell didn't know they were coming until they showed up) were taken to the 1973 NCAA championships in Boby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: donation to Cornell athletics vs Cornell Hockey Assoc. membership - 21 years ago
Thanks, Larry. But now I'm concerned that they'll just throw it in the general pot and end up giving Mike whatever they think he should have, regardless of what you and I and others designate for hockey. And there's still the issue of giving appreciated securities for some of us now living on...ahem...fixed income. Somewhere I thought I read or heard that each coach was given an annual amounby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: donation to Cornell athletics vs Cornell Hockey Assoc. membership - 21 years ago
I'm not sure why anyone should care whether Cornell can count their gift or not in an irrelevant statistic used to compile a meaningless ranking, but tax deductibility is certainly an important consideration.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: donation to Cornell athletics vs Cornell Hockey Assoc. membership - 21 years ago
If things work like Greg described (a la The United Way--you can designate to whom your support is going but it makes no difference in the bottom line amount that organization/organizations gets unless you give more than The United Way deems it/them deserving of) then CHA may be a better vehicle. That raises three other questions: 1. Are "gifts" through CHA tax-deductible? 2.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: "What do you want more of from eLynah" poll discussion - 21 years ago
My donation goes directly to the hockey program--or at least that's my intent--so I'm not going to stop making it. But I'm really pissed at this wrongheaded decision. Could you tell?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

It doesn't sound like there's an "appearance" problem, but more a "use" problem. Having a SOG feature but not being able to use it correctly does make one scratch one's head, however.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

My sense is, since the era of CEO Charlie Moore, athletics has lost the capacity to listen. My experience in business has been that few CEOs have functioning ears.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

The York game wasn't broadcast, so there's no evidence, yet. But Adam did a capable job doing color with Grady during a game or two last season.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Scoreboard - 21 years ago
It isn't clear to me just what the purpose of a shots-on-goal counter is if it isn't updated real-time. They're always announced at period end anyway. The displaying of nonsense like "make some noise" on the message screen is just one more indication that Cornell's athletics administration is simply totally out of touch with Cornell's fans. Really very sad. Now if there's anything tby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

I'll even take some very small amount of "credit" for Jay's hiring. Seeing the success BU was having with Boston-area kids in the early 70s, with considerable effort I enticed Dick Bertrand to come to Boston and dragged him to a few high school games. It opened his eyes and he hired an assistant, Riley, with a Boston-area connection. I wouldn't say Cornell has had a lot of recruiby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: our esteemed goalie - 21 years ago
True, Mark, but I don't think anyone really took seriously that he'd be a big star in the pros. College goalies just didn't do that then, no matter how good they were in college. IIRC, Tony O and Dryden were the first to really get to the Vezina/All-Star level in the NHL. To his everlasting credit--and I forget his name so I can't give him any--one Boston scribe writing before the series preby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Shows the impact Ken's performance against the Bruins in the 1971 playoffs had on the Boston sports community. People here simply could not believe it at the time. And they still remember 31-plus years later.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
