Re: ECAC Press Release - 21 years ago
Unless it's a big Skidmore weekend (parents/family or such) SS should be fairly priced in March. It's a ripoff in July and August during racing season--but even the NHL doesn't extend the season that long. I suspect I'll get a very nice room in the heart of Broadway for $70 or so with a good continental breakfast and an indoor lap pool--and no problems with minimum stays, late cancellations, eby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

The NCAA lacrosse selection committee has seemingly been obsessed with "quality" wins.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

And I will make my Saratoga Springs hotel reservations as soon as the announcement is made. The LP ripoff is--apparently--at long last over.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: 1967 NCAA Championship - 21 years ago
Thank you, Arthur! Two observations: 1. Seems like BU and Bill Cleary came as a package deal that year. 2. Ironic the NCAA championship game-winner came during a Jack Parker penalty.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: '66-'67 - 21 years ago
Speaking of faded memories... I recall Doug Ferguson centering that first line with brother Dave on right wing and Doran on left. My enduring memory of Doug is his pulling that strange beanie-like helmet worn by Ned's teams down low on his forehead before taking important faceoffs. That and his first period hat trick in Cornell's first ever ECAC playoff victory: 9-0 over BC in 1966.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Wonder in how many games the Red Wings owner's family played the last time they won the cup.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Not-very-official answer - 21 years ago
I believe the puck has to cross the goal line completely, and, as long as it hasn't been kicked, thrown, or whatever else is against the rules, it doesn't matter whether it's in the goalie's glove, mouth, belly, or whatever.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Perhaps what they're thinking is that 60% of the visitors to this forum think Albany is a better idea.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Legends of Hockey DVD and Cornell uniforms - 21 years ago
Mark, I have the Legends of Hockey DVD with the Dryden segment, which I suspect is what you're referring to. I believe the picture is of the freshman team in '65-'66, which was wearing an older (pre-Harkness, I'm pretty sure) Cornell uniform. The very next still on the segment shows Ken in what was then the varsity home red uniform (against Harvard, I believe) with the single wider white stripeby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: We were hockey players once, and young - 21 years ago
Oops, Mark, forgot to answer your question. As best as I can remember, the "three-striped sleeves" uniforms predated Harkness's arrival in 1963. Seems to me when I first arrived in Ithaca in September 1961, "Cornell" was spelled out diagonally down the front of the sweater, a la "Rangers." The BU tie was Dryden's only blemish against Boston-area college teams.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: We were hockey players once, and young - 21 years ago
Sad to say, Mark, I did not see the game, although I was in Boston that evening. The Arena was sold out, and it was just impossible to get in. That game was long-awaited and ticket demand was amazing. College hockey was never a hotter item in Boston than in the late 60s and early 70s. Interestingly, Cornell had played in the ECAC Holiday Festival Tournament in the Garden (against Northeasternby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

According to this blurb on USCHO, the NCAA capacity requirement for a regional venue is now 4,000.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Arena's college coaching career - 21 years ago
Arena won five national championships at Virginia before going to DC United. He had been an assistant lacrosse coach at Cornell under Richie Moran before going to UVA to be assistant lacrosse and head soccer coach. The UVA soccer program was essentially moribund prior to Bruce's arrival.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Bruce Arena and Cornell admissions - 21 years ago
Excellent article. One of the more interesting tidbits is that Arena, despite being a terrific lacrosse prospect (and subsequently a deserving All-American middie), could not get into Cornell directly out of high school because of his grades, and therefore spent two (national championship) years at Nassau CC proving he could cut it academically. So much for the usual crap about "if you'rby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Women lose to Georgetown in NCAAs - 21 years ago
#1 Georgetown beat Cornell 12-10 in OT today in an NCAA women's lacrosse semifinal. Women play a two-period OT and Georgetown scored once in each to break the 10-10 regulation tie. Tough way to end a terrific season.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Albany vs Placid - 21 years ago
"Greg Berge has often made the point that it's great to literally have the whole town dedicated to, and filled with, college hockey fans!" Dedicated to ripping college hockey fans off would be a more accurate characterization.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: OT: Commencement Speaker - 21 years ago
Both worthy choices. Andrew Dickson White, along with Daniel Coit Gilman of Johns Hopkins and Charles William Eliot of Harvard, changed the face of American higher education in the latter half of the 19th century.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: NCAA Tournament Expansion - 21 years ago
Thank you, apple, for taking it as it was intended--tongue-firmly-in-cheek.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: OT: Commencement Speaker - 21 years ago
This is the first I've heard of a change..but that doesn't mean it hasn't been changed for a long time. Who or what is Danny Glover, and why should about-to-be Cornell graduates care what he/she/it has to say? Please tell me Cornell isn't seeking cheap notoriety by handing out bogus honorary degrees now.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Albany vs Placid - 21 years ago
By staying in Saratoga Springs you get "nice" (much nicer than LP, IMHO) as well as "convenient."by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: Dave Ferguson: C.U. *lax* star?? - 21 years ago
Spring 1961 was even before my time. I'm not that old, Hyla. No recollection of Ferguson. Jung Leong and Tom Beeby are as far back as I go.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
