Quote from: jtn27As I'm sure most of you already know the US Mens's Under 18 team that we play tonight has a player, Michael McCarron, who has already committed to Cornell for next season (in fact, it's probably already on this thread somewhere, but I don't feel like looking). This roster lists where all the players have committed to, but four of them (Goalies Thatcher Dekmo, Curtis Frye, and Hunter Miska, and defenseman Clint Lewis) don't have any commitments listed. Does anyone know if any of these four players are potential Cornell recruits?

Thatcher Demko has visited Cornell. He's a big deal recruit, I have to imagine he's visiting a lot of top schools.

How can he be an NCAA hockey recruit?  He looks like he's nine years old.

(Yes, I recognize that this picture may be a year old, but still.)

And just how old does that make you feel.::dribble::

I find this disapointing. Karma perhaps, after getting Mike McCarron from Sparty.

Here's some more on this:
Quote from: MARIO ANNICCHIARICO,Times ColonistDeJong de-committed from Cornell University because of complications with the financial aid package the school was offering. The two sides spent six weeks trying to iron it all out, but in the end the 17-year-old opted out of Cornell and on Monday committed to the University of Michigan, which has a spot on defence for him next season. "They have a great business school and great tradition with the hockey program," said DeJong.

Too bad. On paper (screen) he looks like a topnotch player. ::bang::

The USHR article about this said that his father owns a business and with the improving economy and improving business, Nolan's aid package changed. He was totally committed to Cornell, but it was a case of either paying a lot to go to Cornell, or a full ride at Michigan (or BU, his other option). Can't blame the kid for making that choice, and good to know he wasn't recruited away because there wasn't a letter of intent.

As the father of a high school senior (who, while she has academic talent, has limited athletic ability), I can certainly understand why taking a full ride at a well-regarding school such as Michigan would be preferable to paying boatloads of cash to Cornell (as much as it pains me to say that).

Also, while it's not fun to see a well-regarded recruit slip away, it's nice to see a bit of substantive difference between Cornell's need-based financial aid (no air quotes around it denoting "we need a defenseman so you get financial aid") and scholarships at sports factories.

Whether that moral high ground is actually WORTH losing a well-regarded recruit is a separate issue, of course.

Better that distance be in not lowering academic qualifications.  Losing kids because you have the "moral courage" to soak middle class parents for ridiculously inflated tuition is not my reading of the "I would found" mission.

This is probably the purest opportunity for a "Safety School" chant we're likely to see. He is literally playing for his second choice.

Yeah, but we let him in.  That ruins it.

As the child of middle class parents who paid the same (well, the ~15-years-ago equivalent) ridiculously inflated tuition, I think I'm within my rights to be glad that athletes are treated the same way.

According to twitter and some other sources McCarron has now decided to go to Western Michigan. Tough loss for the Big Red.
