Re: Maine-New Hampshire score updates [SPOILERS!!] - 22 years ago
Well, he's back out of the penalty box. 7-2 Maine. Anyone keeping count of how often St. Shawn's name has been invoked?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Maine takes the lead 3-2 during an interview with Shawn Walsh's widow.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Still 2-1 after one. I make the odds about 2:1 against that a fight breaks out in the next period.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Maine-New Hampshire score updates [SPOILERS!!] - 22 years ago
UHN gets the SGH to take the lead 2-1 late in the first. Incidentally, was Haydar hanging out with Hornby in Worcester? Earlier this period he checked Nault into Maine goalie Morrison and flattened both of them.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Maine-New Hampshire score updates [SPOILERS!!] - 22 years ago
For those who are not listening from work and not planning to watch a tape when they get home: Maine and UNH are tied at 1 midway thru the first. Maine seemed to have gone up 2-1, but on the replay the puck had slid in under the side of the net (the goalie was leaning against the post, and had lifted the cage off the ice just enough) and was waved off.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Re: Tiebreakers... - 22 years ago
I used to talk about baseball on the old CHDF. Actually, I was going to mention the tiebreakers for the Swiss Baseball and Softball Federation. Not being as tiebreaker-obsessed as we Americans, they only had one or two tiebreakers, but they made a distinction between tiebreaking to determine seeding and tiebreaking to determine who made the playoffs, got relegated, etc. In the former case, thby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Frozen Four[TM] Chat - 22 years ago
Is anybody going to be on the Lynah Chat today, tonight or Saturday? Are we rooting for UNH so we can say we were barely eliminated by the eventual national champions?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Ivy tiebreaker - 22 years ago
Al DeFlorio wrote: The old Big Ten Rose Bowl tiebreaker was interesting: the team that had been to the Rose Bowl more recently stayed home. Actually, I kinda liked that one. Unambiguous, and it shares the wealth around the conference. Of course, any tiebreaker is dubious in the Big 11, where some teams don't play each other, so you could go undefeated in the conference and still not reap theby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Ivy tiebreaker - 22 years ago
Just about every tiebreaking scheme ends with "coin toss", but in most systems it's statistically implausible to get to that stage. (For instance, the last version of the NFL tiebreakers I've seen requires that two different "net points" tiebreakers and "strength of schedule" (which I think is average opponents' winning percentage) be tied before it gets to a coin tby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Midseason review and Ivy tiebreaker - 22 years ago
Clearly, they should take a lead from Ivy basketball and have a knockout tournament among the co-champions, to be held at the Carrier Dome.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: [Off-topic] Lacrosse - 22 years ago
Loyola? I didn't know they played lacrosse in New Orleans! Oh, you mean a different Loyola.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: [Off-topic] Lacrosse - 22 years ago
Okay, I just checked, and apparently men's ice hockey, men's lacrosse, and women's softball are all tied together.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: [Off-topic] Lacrosse - 22 years ago
Actually, IIRC they tied the men's ice hockey bracket expansion to a women's sport. The former is providing the $$$ and the latter the gender equity, so it's an attractive package all around. With regards to the controversy over automatic bids, selection committee chair Jack MacDonald says he thinks the tourney needs more auto-bids (gee, think his good feelings about auto-bids could have anythiby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Re: Krzysztof drafted... sorta - 22 years ago
IIRC, the Cowboys got the rights to Herschel Walker that way while he was in the USFL. Is that how the Niners got Steve Young (the 40 million dollar man)?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

I've never been to the Frozen Four but the best between-game meal option has to be the HOCKEY-L dinner.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: ECAC Championship Belt - 22 years ago
I'm not considering the ECAC Championship Belt to be on the line in non-conference games or NCAA tournament games, only ECAC regular-season and playoff games. (Just as I assume exhibition games and games against non-Division-I schools don't count towards posession of the NCAA Championship Belt.)by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: ECAC Championship Belt - 22 years ago
But like the NCAA Championship Belt, it will almost always end the season in the posession of the champions. In fact, starting next year, it will always do so, since with everyone making the playoffs, only the champion and the third-place team will end the ECAC season with a win, and the belt cannot make it into the consolation game, since by definition each participant will have lost its previoby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
ECAC Championship Belt - 22 years ago
Inspired by the meaningless curiosity that is the NCAA Championship Belt, I decided to do the same thing for the ECAC (considering only ECAC league and playoff games). Turns out Cornell only held the belt for one day this season, in Lake Placid: SLU: * Started season with belt * Defended successfully in 0 games * Lost to Clarkson 6-7 Nov 3 Clarkson: * Won belt from SLU 7-6 Nov 3 * Defended sucby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Fencing - 22 years ago
Hmm, the NCAA championships page says fencing has been a coed championship since 1990. Maybe the national tournament works differently than the regular season?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: NCAA Semifinal Times - 22 years ago
They sell the three games as a package, but they give you three tickets with individual prices printed on them. Not sure how they make extra money on that, but it does let people re-sell them piecemeal if they like.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: NCAA Semifinal Times - 22 years ago
Presumably, they also want to avoid having the semis and finals on consecutive days, lest the winner of the late semi be at a disadvantage. Otherwise they could play the semis Saturday and the finals Sunday or some such.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
NCAA Semifinal Times - 22 years ago
Well, it's hardly news; the NCAAs have been played Thursday-Saturday for a number of years now. I assume it was originally to avoid conflicts with squeakball (the final used to be Saturday morning for this reason) but it's not clear what the motivation is now. I guess they want to leave the extra day for the Hobey presentation?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: It's official - 22 years ago
Of course, even if we had beat UNH, we'd be going stir-crazy in this pre-Frozen-Four week off. But it is a lot harder to bear knowing that the only teams we'll get to see in the next 6+ months are Maine, UNH, Minnesota and Michigan.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
