Discussions about sports other than hockey
Re: [Lax] Dartmouth @ C.U. (Sat., 4/13) - 22 years ago
Well, it's not Big Red hockey, but it is Grady calling a Cornell game. Dartmouth led 2-0 after one, but Redd and Beers have tied it up for Cornell. I'm in the Lynah Chat, FWIW. And BEERS scores again. 3-2 Cornell!by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Hockey computer virus? - 22 years ago
Of course, this does assume that your linux box doesn't have any unfixed root exploits that allow code executed by an unprivileged user to masquerade as root. But in general, yes, even if a hacker tried to target linux with an email virus they would need to trick the user into running the program, and then if they wanted to destroy anything besides the user's own files, they'd need to try a rootby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Weather Conditions - 22 years ago
Why do I feel the need to mention the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their lifetime record of never having won a game where the temperature at kickoff was below freezing? I've actually been to a couple of outdoor college hockey games, at Utah Lake State Park in Provo (where BYU's club team used to play before the Seven Peaks olympic venue was built). It was a wacky scene, with games starting at 9:45pby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

What do you say to the Bradley-Terry RRWP version: 1. Georgetown 1.0000 2. Cornell .9815 3. Johns Hopkins .9444 Syracuse .9444 Virginia .9444 6. Loyola .9074 7. No. Carolina .8456 8. Re: [Lax] PWR for lacrosse? - 22 years ago
Does the NCAA even use RPI for Lacrosse? If they do, it's almost certainly the standard 25/50/25 weighting, with a bunch of unspecified NCAA fudge factors folded in. As far as I know, hockey is the only sport to use the modified weighting, and the only one to use the RPI undoctored. Also, the Air Force 19-game solution (which turned out to be irrelevant since AFA ended up with 20 D1 games onceby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: The...duh...updated computer ratings - 22 years ago
It's understandable that the power ratings don't line up with strength of schedule and won-lost record, since they focus on goal differential (apparently without regard for wins and losses, so if you lost 9 1-goal games and beat a decent team 20-2, you could still be doing pretty well in the power ratings). Syracuse probably gets a big push from some of their big wins (like 19-4 over Hobart). Sby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: [Lax] PWR for lacrosse? - 22 years ago
Okay, thanks to Matt Carberry, I got hold of composite scores and was able to kludge together my full suite of hockey ratings for the lacrosse season at It probably still says "hockey" in a lot of places, and I can't vouch for the KPWR (since my scripts assume all the teams are KRACH-comparable to each other, which holds halfway through a 30-game hockey season but not a 12-game lacrossby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Not really a testimonial - 22 years ago
Since it's from a Cornell fan, but a followup to the HOCKEY-L discussion linked above: Unfortunately, the intelligent discussion on that thread was ended by a reply from one of HOCKEY-L's few idiot posters. Fortunately the ratio of content and esprit de corps to flaming and vitriol is much higher on H-L than the USCHO board, which is one reason I read the former more frequently than the latteby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: The Best Fans on the Best Forum - 22 years ago
People may say we're "most vulgar", but that's pretty clearly not true, as a trip to e.g., Yost will likely demonstrate. (Nor do we regularly use language as off-color as "fuck 'em up, fuck 'em up, BC sucks", at least now that we're ostensibly saying "rough 'em up" in Gary Glitter.) Our standard cheers would probably not even garner more than a TV-PG(L), unless youby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: WANT TO HAVE SOME FUN? - 22 years ago
Wow, that is pretty silly. Perhaps they would prefer Syracuse only play box lacrosse?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: [Lax] PWR for lacrosse? - 22 years ago
They're designed to be pretty generic (in fact, the '16' in last 16 is actually a function argument). What I'd need would be a list of teams with corresponding abbreviations, and a text file containing all the results. Do any of the poor substitutes for USCHO have an easily-parsed score database?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
[Lax] TV? - 22 years ago
Any word on whether any Cornell games will be televised this season? Searching TV Guide online for the next two weeks only reveals the ACC championships (men's and women's). There is a half-hour magazine called "Lacrosse Weekly" on Home Team Sports, Empire, and FSNY. It seems to premiere on Wednesdays, but does anyone know when it's produced? Will today's edition have anything aboutby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Paging Mark the BU Fan - 22 years ago
I'm pretty sure that was his name. Anyway, he's an occasional contributor to this forum and although his agenda is obviously different from ours, I think we treat one another with mutual respect. (We try to make a distinction between yelling at another team and their fans during the game--which is all in good fun--and treating them like college hockey comrades when we encounter them outside ofby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Notes on the Frozen Four (long) - 22 years ago
Hauser was basically putting on a Hextallian "maul anyone who gets near the crease" display; I assume he was given some latitude because he's a goalie. The trip that set up the Minnesota PPG basically occurred when the Mainer stuck his leg out and the Gopher had the good sense to go head-over-heels. For what it's worth, Pi let go what looked like to me interference earlier in the overby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Minny up 1-0; almost made it 2-0 on a Boucheresque play by Maine goalie Matt Yeats, who got confused about who has received a delayed penalty and skated to the bench.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Unsanctioned titles - 22 years ago
Poor Harvard is getting no credit for the AHCA women's hockey title they won before the NCAA started officially sanctioning the championship. NPR mentioned that UMD had won both National Championships in women's hockey; see the following recent HOCKEY-L post for more:by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

MAAC - 22 years ago
I think I would feel better about a string of gift bids and NCAA losses for Quinnipiac and Mercyhurst if people in the MAAC weren't so proud of their "accomplishment" in making the NCAAs.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
