Re: The actual GAME against Harvard - 22 years ago
Okay, so here's my take on Saturday's game: 1) We played like crap for the first two periods and were lucky to be leading 39 minuted in and tied at the break. We were outshot 16-8 according to the announced saves, but Dov let in three of the eight shots. Presumably there was a decision to lay off the forecheck to avoid getting beat by Harvard's speed on the large ice (which may mean that all tby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
NCAA seeding consequences of a win over Hahvahd - 22 years ago
I also came to the conclusion that we would still have been paired with Quinnipiac, but the difference between a 3 and 4 seed would have been being bracketed to play BU rather than UNH in the second round, which would have meant both an easier draw and a lot more fun! God damn, why did we have to lose to Hahvahd! Anyway, as it is now, we're bracketed to play BU in the semis in St. Paul if we boby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

The process of awarding byes is not supposed to be subjective. They award the byes based on the pairwise comparisons. The problem is that in some scenarios, it's not clear what that means. Most of the time, the top four teams beat everyone else in the PWCs, but for instance if all of the favorites win today and tomorrow, except that NMU beats Michigan State, we end up 4th in the PWR, but we loby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Talking to individuals around the water cooler - 22 years ago
If I'm not mistaken, Melissa pointed out that she doesn't have access to email right now, so no they can't. Along the same lines, my plan A ride is on the way, so I'll see you gals in Placid. (Mr. Mike's, 5:30 or so.)by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
MST3k & Sports Night - 22 years ago
Sci-Fi airs MST3k but only the crappy post-Trace ones from after it moved off Comedy Central. I was out of the country for the entire run of Sports Night, and only discovered it in reruns on Comedy Central. The fact that it failed while drivel like Survivor amd Millionaire thrived makes me weep for the state of American television. Then I remember that West Wing is phenomenally successful, andby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Biting Sun Article - 22 years ago
I would say (and have done for the past month or two) that it will be a disappointment if the team does not win the ECACs. (Just ask UVM in 1996, Cornell in 1991, etc.)by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Judy Alarm - 22 years ago
Well, that explains everything. So I guess I should post here if/when I get the confirmation that my ride is on the way (should be in about an hour).by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Biting Sun Article - 22 years ago
I'll echo what's been said by others on this thread. The goal this weekend should be to win the ECAC title, plain and simple. Next week we can (Hockey Gods willing) talk about how far we expect this team to go in the NCAAs. Of course, I still say winning the ECACs is the cake and anything that happens in the NCAAs is the icing. I'd hate to see success turn us into one of those Hockey Least teby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Clarkson vs Harvard - 22 years ago
Beating Clarkson in the final would help us more in the selection criteria than beating Hahvahd (presumably because the Crimson are not a "Team Under Consideration", and might even--I shit you not--get us a first-round bye. I suspect losing to Hahvahd would also be worse, since going 2-0 would make them a TUC and add two losses and one win to our record vs TUCs.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Re: "Storied" coaches - 22 years ago
Hofher had a career sort of like McCutcheon's: early success and high hopes, followed by gradual disappointment. One silver lining to the way Maxie left was that he had just won an Ivy co-championship, and got to go out on top. No, wait, let me rephrase that...by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Signs of the apocalypse - 22 years ago
Can I just point out that RichS is acting as the voice of reason on this thread? Seriously 1) Age, Rich can't really be expected to take into account parts of the tape he hasn't seen and 2) Rich, I'm sorry we won't see you in Placid; at some point we should try meeting face-to-face. Re: Rooting for other teams - 22 years ago
Actually, I have a complicated set of allegiances that kick in when Cornell doesn't have a direct interest in a game, and just about all of them tell me I'd like to see RPI beat Dartmouth (and Clarkson beat Harvard). Just look at the 2000 title game, where Cornell fans pulled for RPI and Colgate fans for SLU, for purely emotional reasons.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Going by the PWR and then the seeding logic recreated in programs like John Whelan's, the field and even the seedings have been nearly perfectly predicted the last few years. Re: LP-Accommodations, etc. - 22 years ago
Given the experience of 2000, I have to agree with Rich about North Country locals pulling for both teams. This weekend's fan alliances should be interesting, since Cornell fans hate both of our fellow Ivy participants...by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Re: We're a damn good ... - 22 years ago
Also remember that from (I think) 1995 to 2000, all regular season champions were automatically given tournament bids (not technically auto-bids, but the difference is irrelevant) thanks to the "Colorado College Rule". And from 1997 to 2000, anyone who won a RS and tournament title automatically got a bye.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Re: PWR after Saturday - 22 years ago
I think the confusion is between using RPI as a tiebreaker to decide an individual comparison and using RPI as a tiebreaker when ranking teams based on the number of comparisons won (after you've worked out who wins each comparison). When deciding who wins a comparison, RPI is definitely used as a tiebreaker if each team wins the same number of criteria. OTOH, when deciding how to rank teams baby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
