Re: End-of-R.S. Stats - 22 years ago
I don't think that chart really says anythin in our favor. We are a good team in a bad conference. (Mercyhurst is a mediocre team in a horrible conference.) The top teams in the better conferences played tougher schedules, and lost more games as a result.by ugarte - Hockey

test Well, I seem to be missing some posts. The category is reading as "new" and the time indicates that I am not the only poster today, but I don't see any other posts. Is the problem on my end?by ugarte - Hockey
Re: Playoff possibilities - 22 years ago
The tournament is at the end of the year. A selection criteria that captures, and gives "extra-credit" to, recent performance is a way of getting the teams playing the best hockey come tournament time into the tournament. I think it is a valid criteria, as long as it is properly treated alongside other criteria that analyze the whole season. There is a good reason that everyone livinby ugarte - Hockey
Re: Playoff possibilities - 22 years ago
I don't mind the sharp cutoff as much as you, though I acknowledge that it is a problem given how closely clustered the RPIs will be between, say, 22 and 30. A weighting system would also be a reasonable way of capturing this criteria.by ugarte - Hockey
Re: Playoff possibilities - 22 years ago
I agree with JTW that it is not unfair to include in the selection process biases in favor of recent success and success against better teams. Pairwise may not be perfect, but I don't think it is horrible. The critieria can be adjusted, however. I like the way JTW adjusts the criteria so that games are weighted according to when they were played and agree taht it is an improvement over the arby ugarte - Hockey
Re: TUC - 22 years ago
Interesting. I like it. Do you have a similar theory for dealing with the TUC question? I actually think the .500 criteria, while arbitrary, is a good one - but I disagree with the Findlay rule. Schools that are in the process of moving to D-1 should be able to upgrade their NC schedule without negative consequences. I could see why a team wouldn't want to give up qualifying games because itby ugarte - Hockey
Re: TUC - 22 years ago
There is no "in/out" feature of TUC. There is no such thing as a TUC until the season is over. Teams don't get "considered" until all of the games have been played. Our willingness to obsess over phenomena like "what would happen if the season ended today" only creates the illusion that there is an "in/out" feature. Union's season ended yesterday. Not onlby ugarte - Hockey

Sounds like they didn't dress Underhill so they could get an extra skater into the lineup. True?by ugarte - Hockey

Re: RPI/Union - 22 years ago
I spent a year and a half at SUNYA, and I remember Sutter's Mill (or something like that) having very good wings. If I recall, they also ID'd hard - I got in at 18 (with an ID that wouldn't pass muster at Dunbar's) because a group of about 8 guys I was out with said "if he can't come in, we all leave." An instantaneous cost/benefit analysis by the bouncer, and 9 guys were drinking aby ugarte - Hockey

I thought he was a very mature looking freshman until I realized that he is now 23. I've got to stop thinking that our hockey players are 18 when they are freshmen.by ugarte - Hockey
Re: Off topic: Lacrosse - 22 years ago
Sounds like a great lax day. It is a doubleheader, not a tournament, right? (ie, no game the next day against Princeton or JHU) At our current poll ranking, we won't make the tournament. Is that the general feeling around the lax world?by ugarte - Hockey
Re: College Hockey All-Star Game - 22 years ago
From www.m-w.com - Main Entry: drove Pronunciation: 'drOv Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Old English drAf, from drIfan to drive -- more at DRIVE Date: before 12th century 1 : a group of animals driven or moving in a body 2 : a large number : CROWD -- usually used in plural especially with in <tourists arriving in droves> <stayed away in droves>by ugarte - Hockey
Re: NCAA - 22 years ago
Oh, stop it guys. It is about more than just money. The reason there is more money is a larger tournament is that more people care. More money is a result of more interest. This does not mean that we should have a 64 team tournament (please return those slippery slope arguments to their holster), but a 6 team tournament that includes, for example, Lowell, Denver, Michigan, RPI, Wayne Statby ugarte - Hockey
Re: Titles - 22 years ago
Of course hockey had only 4 significant conferences, so it was possible to give out up to 2 autobids without any real jeopardy of keeping out a team that "deserved" to be in the tournament any more than, say, Colorado College. With the addition of CHA and the MAAC (and the gulp decline of the ECAC) guaranteeing up to 2 autobids is as untenable in hockey as it is in basketball.by ugarte - Hockey

Oh, OK, Rich. You win. The whole Clarkson team got together to help Poapst blow the RPI game.by ugarte - Hockey

Odd juxtaposition, Keith. You wrote both: I maintain that a team that can't win it's league QF series doesn't deserve a chance to play for the national title. and I actually think that a team that doesn't win one of it's leagues titles (RS or tourney) doesn't deserve a shot at the national championship. I mean, how how can you be national champ if you're not your league champ first? Youby ugarte - Hockey

Does the school have any intention of putting up an ECAC regular season banner? (Just curious, but patient. No need to answer this question until after the tournament. )by ugarte - Hockey

Re: CHAMPIONS! - 22 years ago
I am stoked. ECAC Regular season champions. Ivy League Champions. What a great damn year. I couldn't care less who we play in the tournament. We are the best team in the league this year, and it shouldn't matter what order we play the other teams in. Either we will win, or we won't. LET'S GO RED!!!by ugarte - Hockey
