Fair - 22 years ago
If we wan to be "fair", that is to give everyone a fair chance to get in based on performace against a set of known criteria without the volatility, etc. we should go to a system like Greg mentioned the other day: bids to conference champions only. Then there'd be no arguments about which ranking system is fair or whatever...by KeithK - Hockey
#1 in the nation - 22 years ago
...except the season lasts another 5 weeks as far as the NCAA is concerned. But a nice achievement even with my nitpicking!by KeithK - Hockey
Re: skater vs. goalie - 22 years ago
I'm pretty sure you can't substitute a skater for a goalie. You are allowed 18 skaters and 3 goalies, not 21 players to divide as you will.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: Union - 22 years ago
Yup, it's Findlay. Union was 1-0-1 against them so their record for NC$$ purposes is one under .500. Not a TUC.by KeithK - Hockey
UAH and Niagara - 22 years ago
A check of the rankings shows Niagara at 14-14-1 and UAH at 11-16-1. I think the games against Findlay don't count. So UAH is definitely not a TUC unless they sweep Bemidji and then win their tournament (3 games). Niagara is in trouble too unless they can beat Wayne St. tonight. So we root for Niagara to win tonight and then for UAH to run their table.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: Next year - 22 years ago
I still suspect we'll end up with at least one "patsy" game to start the year in addition to the usual Canadian warmup. But hopefully we'll at least try to get someone like Mercyhurst or Amherst for that. I just hope we don't have an agreement to travel to Huntsville!by KeithK - Hockey
Playoff possibilities - 22 years ago
I won't try to go into exhaustive detail (I'll leave that to Bill Fenwick ) but a few playoff notes 1) Clarkson clinches 2nd with a win or tie tonight. They're third if they lose. 2) Dartmouth clinches 2nd with a win at Cheel. If they tie they can still get 3rd but might end up 5th. A loss could drop them to 6th (I don't think they can lose the RPI tiebreak and fall to 7th). 3) Harvard can clincby KeithK - Hockey
Direct comparisons - 22 years ago
From what I remember, losing the direct comparisons will hurt us if we're on the bubble with those teams, which certainly could happen. It could also hurt come seeding time (if we get in) because that's done on a direct comparison basis. This is where the Estero games particularly hurt. Really just the NMU game. If we win that one in 2OT, we'd have gone on to play Maine and our common opponentby KeithK - Hockey
Re: Next year's schedule - 22 years ago
Usually you can't find next year's schedule until sometime early in the summer. I am pretty sure that BU is scheduled to come to Lynah for a pair, which would probably come over Thanksgiving. But for everything else you'll have to wait...by KeithK - Hockey
Re: PWR 3/1 - 22 years ago
After the final game tonight has ended, Cornell sits in a three way tie for 5th in the pairwise with St. Cloud and BY. The tie is non-transitive - Cornell beats St.C, St.C beats BU and BU beats CU. Of course, this will all change a dozen times between now and 3/16...by KeithK - Hockey
20 win season - 22 years ago
With the win tonight Cornell goes to 20-6-2, marking the 15th 20 win season in the program's history. (That may not sound impressive to any visiting Westerners, or even Clarkson fans, but with the Ivy League game limitations it's pretty good). It's the first 20 win season since '97 and the first 20 win regular season since '78. The Cornell record for most RS wins is 24, in '70, of course.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: Inclusion - 22 years ago
Agreed. It's this silly idea that we can't risk hurting someone's feelings by distinctions based on performance or ability.by KeithK - Hockey
lighters - 22 years ago
Oh please. Were they mocking us a bit during the Alma Mater? Yeah sure. But you've got to admit, singing the whole six verse Alma is probably worth a little mocking from the opponent's perspective. I mean, it takes almost the whole intermission! And this comes from someone who memorized the whole six verses years ago and really misses being there for the group rendition. Save your indignationby KeithK - Hockey
DQ counts - 22 years ago
I'm pretty sure the NC$$ rule agrees with the WHL: 1 for #1, 2 for #2...by KeithK - Hockey
Re: CHAMPIONS! - 22 years ago
OK, it's Sunday and we beat Clarkson to make it a 3 point weekend. Now I can be really happy. WE'RE #1!!!by KeithK - Hockey
Re: CHAMPIONS! - 22 years ago
They stopped allowing the #1 seed to choose (and they always chose the early game Friday) after the first year of the PIG when it was clear that this was more of an unfair advantage than the league wanted to give the top team (the league wanted the #1 to win back then to take advantage of the Clarkson rule). Probably they'll go back to giving the top seed the choice next year when the PIG is goneby KeithK - Hockey
Re: CHAMPIONS! - 22 years ago
Dartmouth still can win the Ivy outright with a win over Yale tomorrow. If they tie or lose tomorrow we clinch at least a shre of the Ivy (remember, Harvard can catch us in the Ivy standings by beating Princeton/yale next weekend).by KeithK - Hockey

Re: Wow!!!!!!! - 22 years ago
The International Skating Commision has already proposed a new scoring system. I read this on CNN a couple days ago. The system will award points based on completion of elements with attention to degree of difficulty. The other change is in the judges. Currently there are nine who rank the skaters and the highest number of first place votes wins, essentially. In order to make this more objectby KeithK - Hockey

You're right.... sorry I just got got up and am not really remembering correctly.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: LGT LGT LGT - 22 years ago
I'd forgotten Grant and guess I didn't realize that he had a career ending injury. If you're down a bunch of goals midway through the third, pulling the goalie may give you a chance to get back into it, by closing the gap and giving your team a confidence boost after scoring. But it's a big risk. I don't think Morris is crazy for doing it - just unorthodox.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Vermont, Feb 16 - 22 years ago
Cornell 5, Vermont 2 Harvard 3, St. Lawrence 3 (Three thrid period goals by the Crimson to tie.) Dartmouth 4, Colgate 3 (Green score with 16 ticks left) Brown 2, Clarkson 0 RPI 5, Yale 2 Princeton 4, Union 2 (I think)by KeithK - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Vermont, Feb 16 - 22 years ago
We still haven't eliminated Dartmouth, Clarkson or Harvard and have clinched no worse than 3rd since Dartmouth and Clarkson play to close out the season. One point guarantees 2nd while a win Friday wins the RS title. So come on Red! Destroy SLU on Friday and bring home the (first piece of) hardware!by KeithK - Hockey

You're saying that people actually jingled keys when the game was tied? Good lord, even a trained monkey could figure out that that wasn't appropriate!by KeithK - Hockey
Re: Todd Marr - 22 years ago
Well, he wasn't eligible to play until second semester due to the NC$$ transfer rules. And by that time there was absolutely no way he could get any ice time due to reasons #1 and #2 given above... I wish Todd Marr the best, but I hope and pray he doesn't see any playing time before October.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: Archived yahoo broadcasts - 22 years ago
Well, I tried to start the archived broadcast when I got home last night at 11pm PST and heard "this game is still being archived. Come back later ". It's Saturday morning now and it's still unavailable. So it doesn't seem like you can listen to an archived Friday game before the Saturday game. I suppose I could look into Total Recorder, but it's not nearly as useful if you have to bby KeithK - Hockey
Re: 2/11/02 - 22 years ago
Well, which team we beat of the two only affects Copp which I wasn't affecting anyway so for the sake of this argument I'll assume it'sirrelevant. 1-1 At Estero means RPI of ~ .5968 (#6, slightly ahead of CC) and TUC of 7-4 (.6363). We'd still beat MSU, CC and Minn ni PWR, pushing our comparison wins to 27. With Minnesotas loss to us we'd tied to 4th in ranks but would still lose the H2H withby KeithK - Hockey
Re: 2/11/02 - 22 years ago
Here's a quick calculation. With the two Estero wins we would be 19-3-1 (.8478) which would raise our RPI to .6120. (Head to head games aren't counted in the RPI SOS components, right?) Our TUC record would be 8-3-0 (.7273). The effect on L16 is spurious since these games won't be L16 come tournament time so I'll ignore that. With the new TUC and RPI values we have the #4 RPI in the nation anby KeithK - Hockey
Re: If you could choose... - 22 years ago
I've got to agree with Beeeej and go for B, though only if we do win the RS title (I still think you ought to have to win *something* before being admitted to the national tourney.) By the way, B does get us on the NC$$ Tournament banner (can't remember if we still do the individual tourney appearance banners). And there's also the chance of the all-important Ivy banner.by KeithK - Hockey
