Faceoffs - 22 years ago
A couple people have noted the problem with faceoffs against Harvard. We were atrocious through most of the game. Or else Dom Moore was amazing. It was really amazing to see him win almost every faceoff after we had won all of them the night before against RPI. That was a big difference in the game. If we win an even or better share throughout the game it would've greatly helped our puck movby KeithK - Hockey
Re: The Murray call - 22 years ago
When Hansen called Murray for roughing I was screaming at the TV screen just like evryone I was watching with. I was shocked that he made the call for that at that point in the game. When they showed the replay a minute later I understood the call a little better - Doug did wrap his arm around the guy's neck and pull a bit as he twisted to go around the Harvard player. I still didn't think theby KeithK - Hockey
NMU game - 22 years ago
I was under the impression that Schafer thought the team's preformance at the entire Estero tournament was subpar, not just the OSU game (which I'm sure of). But I missed both games so I may well be wrong.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: The actual GAME against Harvard - 22 years ago
While there certainly is a continuum between "parade to the penalty box" (see Bill Doiron, at Brown, 11/98) and "hands-off" I don't believe that the happy medium is necessarily far from the way the games were called or that most refs hit that spot most of the time. John Murphy (who called Friday's game) is known for being very hands off. I can't remember what Hansen's rep isby KeithK - Hockey
Bye? - 22 years ago
Yes. We couldn't have passed BU to get into the top 4 without beating a TUC team in the final (i.e. Clarkson). That would've given us the Minnesota comparison in addition to the CC, UM and Maine comps we would've won by virtue of higher RPI with two wins. That might've given us a bye. As it was, best chance was for a #3 east seed. Since #4E and #3 east are pretty interchangeable, the loss didnby KeithK - Hockey
Re: Quinnipiac is IN - 22 years ago
Yes, the bye advantage is a bad thing. But it's easily fixed without going to 16 teams. Do campus sites for the first two rounds. Or make the regionals Thursday-Saturday and Friday-Sunday. Or drop down to 8 teams...by KeithK - Hockey
Re: 1st round: Quinnipiac - 22 years ago
Getting Q for the first round is very much a mixed blessing. Yes, we "should" beat them. We've drawn arguably the easiest first round matchup in the tournament. However, because it's a MAAC school we won't get any "credit" for the win. If we lose we're a pathetic ECAC team losing to the MAAC. If we win it'll mean nothing in the eyes of much of the college hockey world. Soby KeithK - Hockey

Re: Quinnipiac is IN - 22 years ago
I don't understand why everyone assumes that a larger tournament is better. Why does the addition of 3 more bubble teams (I'd guess that the CHA will get a bid after expansion) make it such a better tournament? Right now the teams benfiting would be UAF, NMU, WMU and/or UML. None are world beaters they're all pretty much middling teams from their conferences. The only reasonable argument in myby KeithK - Hockey
Subjective? - 22 years ago
If all of the of the final comparisons are completely trasitive without any ties or craziness then awarding the byes will be trivial and not subjective. But if there is any craziness then it all depends on which objective way you consider the problem. And that could be considered subjective.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: Maine - 22 years ago
I know I had a reason for saying that we definitely lose the comparison with Maine but I can't see why right now. Maybe I was wrong. Hmm... Maybe I was thinking BU? Pretty sure that we can't win the comparison with them.by KeithK - Hockey
tomorrow - 22 years ago
My thoughts: WCHA: Denver vs. Minn very much matters. If we win and Denver loses we'll flip the comparison with DU due to the TUC category. So definitely go Gophers! As for the consy, we've got both St.C and CC beat in comparison if we win, but CC could catch us on RPI if we lose and they win. So probably root for the Huskies. HEA Definitely root for UNH. We may have a chance at passingby KeithK - Hockey
3 wins... - 22 years ago
The fact that people (including myself sometimes) make statements like "it's really hard to beat a team three times" just points out that most people have a bad intuitive understanding of probability. Yes, it's hard to go 3 for 3 in a seaosn, a 1 in 8 chance if your chance in a single are 50-50. But once the first two games are played the third game is a separate event with a 50-50 (oby KeithK - Hockey
Re: CC - 22 years ago
Well, it's bad in that CC can still catch us in RPI now (haven't checked where they stand). But if they win the WCHA it could help us in PWR. Also, Wiconsin can no longer get an upset bid, which is good.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: A bye? - 22 years ago
We're far from bulletproof for a bid right now. With one or two losses this weekend we could be on the outside looking in come Sunday. However, we could also get in with one or two losses, depending on how everything else stacks up. Yes, I don't think we could rise to Top 4 without winning the title and we would need some help even then but it certainly could happen. Are we on the bubble? We'by KeithK - Hockey

Al, the first part of my post (the SH getting consideration bit) was meant to be a little joke. But then I had to go follow it with something somewhat serious and obscure the meaning...by KeithK - Hockey
Re: Dumb TUC - 22 years ago
Well Shaun Hannah's will get a lot more consideration than Brown or Union is they can beat Q and then UConn or Mercyhurst... As for TUC being a silly term, the cutoff is .500 so any team at or above .500 gets looked at for the NC$$s. They may get dismissed out of hand but they do get considered.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: odd comparison - 22 years ago
Well, yes in the obvious sense of undefeated. But the point is that there's often a team that makes it substantially into the NFL season without a loss, giving people hope for an undefeated season. So the Fish alums celebrate every year when the last team loses. It's been a long time since I remember a college hockey team going very deep into the season without a loss or tie. UAH - 22 years ago
No, UAH isn't one game under .500, they're three under for NCAA purposes due to Findlay. I had been thinking that the Chargers could pull the CHA upset and make it to .500 by winning their conference tournament (three more games). But tonight I realized that they play f%$&ing Findlay in the first round. So the best they can do is finish 15-16-1. So we can forget about any help from them.by KeithK - Hockey
'96 - 22 years ago
No, in '96 Schafer led Cornell to a 4th place finish, winning home ice on the last day with a win at SLU (great come from behind win). So we were a +5 that year, not +8. No idea if anyone did better that year but Beeeej is right about the first year rationalization.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: We're a damn good ... - 22 years ago
In fairness to Tim Taylor, Yale was a damn good 10th place team. We just showed 'em that we are a damn good 1st place team. And 1 beats 10...by KeithK - Hockey
Keplers Laws - 22 years ago
It just seems to me that Kepler's Third Law (the one about RPI) actually applies to the ECAC in general. Don't ever try to predict the ECAC. The year where we have the most parity all of the home teams sweep their first round series. Amazing.by KeithK - Hockey
Friday results - 22 years ago
Unfortunately, both MSU and St.C won in overtime in addition to Dartmouth. A lot of close games tonight and a few blowouts out west. Hopefully the underdogs will keep playing well tomorrow everywhere other than Lynah....by KeithK - Hockey
Underhill - 22 years ago
I think Underhill played real well after a somewhay shaky start. The Higgins goal wasnt awful, but Matt didn't play the angle very well and gave Higgins lot's of net to shoot at.by KeithK - Hockey
Re: At Large Bid to NCAAs? - 22 years ago
This year I don't think you can make a clear statement about semifinal vs. consolation opponentes and RPI/PWR. Everyone else is just too close.by KeithK - Hockey
Polls discussion - 22 years ago
You're right - at this time of year there isn't much to say about polls 'cuz we know what the rankings that matter say. Plus, the polls haven't changed much lately and pretty much match the PWR in terms of who is on list.by KeithK - Hockey
Sunday game time. - 22 years ago
Feel free to write Schafer or Laura Stange or Tim Taylor (there's probably contact info on Yale's web site). But I bet they would think that giving the teams a little more time to rest before playing their third game in three days takes precendence over ease of travel for fans. Let's just end it in two and not worry about Sunday...by KeithK - Hockey
