Re: Wrestling 21-22 - 2 years ago
Flo arena can take a while to get used to. The red and green avatars show you what position the wrestlers are in and the time will count down when the clock is running. However, points are awarded without explanation so you either have to be paying close attention or you have to guess as to the sequence of events in some cases.by dag14 - Other Sports

You can find the stats on Flo -- When competition is underway, you can follow the matches in real time without a subscription. Click on the 9 squares icon at the bottom of the screen.by dag14 - Other Sports

And fitting that the rink scoreboard is named for Robbie Gemmell. His goal will for me always be the ultimate example of when it pays to be in the wrong place at the right time.by dag14 - Hockey

Re: Lack of support for Cornell sports teams - 2 years ago
Sometimes universities provide incentives to students to attend athletic events. At UNC, students who go to volleyball games, gymnastics meets, women's athletic events, crew races, etc. collect "points" that give them priority for seating at basketball games. At least this was true 10-15 years ago when a friend was an undergrad there. A brilliant way to fill the seats at the less popby dag14 - Other Sports
Re: Lack of support for Cornell sports teams - 2 years ago
It sounds like she is complaining about the financial support for Ivy athletics not the fan support. As a student, I didn't even know where crew races took place. As an alum and Ithaca resident, I enjoyed heading to the Inlet to cheer along with the kids' parents and siblings....by dag14 - Other Sports

Thanks for this succinct and thoughtful summary. I watched the matches but had the sound muted most of the time so did not have all of the relevant context I particularly liked the energy I saw from the Cornell wrestlers. Every one of them looked invested, even in those matches when they were losing by a lot. Kudos to the coaching staff for setting a high standard.by dag14 - Other Sports

Re: RIP my season tickets - 2 years ago
The email I saw directed to faculty and staff defended the university's current plans to continue in-person classes, etc., arguing that the testing regime is effective in identifying and therefore limiting new cases. Additionally, they stressed that all new cases were either asymptomatic or mild. No faculty or staff tested positive, only students and all positives were traced to "informalby dag14 - Hockey

I just watched the second game of Teat's PLL debut -- Cannons v. Atlas . Jeff's first game was Friday night and he was mediocre, to put it kindly. Not all his fault -- his first game since March 2020, only one practice with this team and it was clear his teammates were not ready for his style of team play. They didn't drop his precision passes inside, they didn't seem to realize he was makingby dag14 - Other Sports

While probably not popular with the local residents, lighting would be a huge improvement. Currently there is no way to play or practice after dark, which is an issue early in the season. That being said, as one of the handful of spectators at Cornell baseball games, it is sad that the facility has to move from central campus. Before I retired, I used to hold office hours in the stands and graby dag14 - Other Sports

COVID has everything to do with it. Like many other coaches at Cornell, Koll did not feel he got much support from the University administration. The Finger Lakes Wrestling Club continued to practice and to a limited extent compete without one positive COVID test. The wrestlers on leave of absence did the same thing with the same degree of safety. Right or wrong -- I doubt we will ever have cby dag14 - Other Sports

At least 5 years ago many freshman athletes were housed on North Campus in the townhouses. So a townhouse cluster that includes a lot of athletes might be more a function of living on North than being related to something that the athletic team were up to.by dag14 - John Spencer Is Dead

The situation is similar to having an academic honor code where students are violating the code if they don't report cheating of which they are aware. The same can be said for the health crisis we now face. Nobody says you have to attend Cornell but if you choose to, you have agreed to abide by certain rules as a result of the pandemic. I have no problem with the notion that other students wilby dag14 - John Spencer Is Dead

They definitely can reach into collegetown to act regarding non-criminal behavior if it involves a breach of a compact voluntarily signed as a condition of enrollment. The devil is in the details, however, when it comes to the reality of trying to enforce such an agreement. If the sanction is being sent home away from Cornell and friends, it might work.by dag14 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2020 - 3 years ago
The disruption in instruction in theory could set a student back academically this spring. If you fail to complete courses because you are hospitalized, a family member dies or you are seriously impacted by emotional issues and you would have a justification to extend your time at Cornell. Want to play a spring sport? Take a leave of absence in the fall and come back in the spring. That has hby dag14 - Other Sports

The Ivy League requires that a student-athlete have an academic reason to stay in school beyond 8 semesters, not just an athletic one. In the past, in order to have a 9th semester approved, the student-athlete generally was expected to make the request fairly well in advance of the 9th semester, putting forward an academic plan that showed a compelling reason to stay on campus. Any plan needs tby dag14 - Other Sports

Noel also noted that construction is at least a year out and given the pandemic issues he is comfortable with the timing . He also discussed potential locations with 2 central campus locations in the running. He favors putting it where the field hockey turf currently sits; the President et al prefer the spot east of the soccer field where the shot put, discus, et al throwing happens.
