Re: Women 2022-23 - 1 year ago
We have looked WAAAY better in this game than in game one's bad loss. Not sure why unless it is because goalie Fraser is in better form.by dag14 - Hockey

I watched the Cornell/UAlbany women's game later on Saturday and we were CORW. It took me a minute to figure it out, too.by dag14 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2023 - 1 year ago
It seems like the camera person does not understand the game of lacrosse. S/he is always a few seconds behind the play, although we do get a good look at the substitutions at mid field.by dag14 - Other Sports
Re: Union @ Cornell - 1 year ago
I agree wholeheartedly. My family watches a month's worth of Cornell athletic events for less than the price of one hockey ticket.by dag14 - Hockey

Sorry; I wasn't clear. Bertrand pulled the goalie looking for #10....by dag14 - Hockey
Re: Union @ Cornell - 1 year ago
I am pretty sure there was a 9-0 first period v. Yale I think, under Bertrand in the Brock Tredway era. I remember because he pulled the goalie with a faceoff in the defensive zone, claiming he wanted the players to practice that play.by dag14 - Hockey
Re: Sprint Football - 1 year ago
Over my 40 years working at Cornell, I went to more sprint football games than "regular" football games because they were more fun to watch, even if Cornell did not win. The fans sat in the west stands and they were pretty full, albeit with parents, girlfriends and fraternity brothers. It is a fast game and linemen can move as quickly as the players in the backfield. As noted, there iby dag14 - Other Sports
Re: Yet another collegetown bar bites the dust - 1 year ago
Dorms are closed over break. Most of the displaced athletes are freshmen. Sometimes they bunk with upperclassmen/women in off campus housing but if that is not an option, they are put up in hotels. I used to decamp to Florida over intercession and for a number of years, freshmen hockey players took over my house. Sometimes men, sometimes women. It was always in pretty good shape when I got hoby dag14 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Women 2022-23 - 1 year ago
The women beat RPI 1-0. Most of our 30 shots were not high-quality but the RPI goalie was the difference in the game, as we outshot them 30-14. Frechette did play and if she was hurting, it didn't seriously affect her performance.by dag14 - Hockey

Re: UConn @ Cornell (MSG), 11/26/2022 - 1 year ago
I clearly mis-remembered/misspoke. He was 26 as a freshman. We were contemporaries at Cornell but all the hockey players seemed old when you were a 17 year old freshman!by dag14 - Hockey
Re: UConn @ Cornell (MSG), 11/26/2022 - 1 year ago
I am pretty sure that Dick Bertrand was ineligible for the post-season games because he had turned 26, the age at which one was considered too old to play, rather than an arbitrary distinction between RS and playoffs. I remember hosting freshmen players for Canadian Thanksgiving in the 80's and serving them beer because they were all 21. At least the Canadian freshmen were.by dag14 - Hockey
Re: Women 2022-23 - 1 year ago
The team looked awful, and I am a long-time, positive fan. I am not sure I can think of anything good to say about the game. Except that it is over and they can look forward to a week off while Derraugh goes off to coach Canada.by dag14 - Hockey
Re: Women 2022-23 - 1 year ago
6-4 Cornell after 2. I was multitasking during the first period but since shots, faceoffs, etc. were even I am guessing it was goalie issues. Changed out the netminder for the second period and she only had 4 saves, as Cornell whaled on Dartmouth to score 5 unanswered goals.by dag14 - Hockey
Re: Women 2022-23 - 1 year ago
A very strange game. Clarkson dominates most of our 5-minute major, only giving up a goal in the last 30 seconds: score 3-1. Then the wheels appear to fall off the bus and at the end of 2 it is 7-1.by dag14 - Hockey

Cornell scores 2 in the first 1:04 and lead Clarkson 2-1 after 1.by dag14 - Hockey
Re: Cornell Daily Sun column - 1 year ago
Class of 1972. And it was a pretty amazing four years. I definitely didn't appreciate the uniqueness of the experience until I found myself comparing my college years to those of the Cornell students I taught in the 80's, 90's and in this millenium.by dag14 - Hockey

Thanks for the link. I used to log into LaXPower regularly, then it disappeared, I had disruption in my life and only this weekend did I realize that I didn't have a go-to site for miscellaneous lacrosse information. So not only did I get the update I was looking for, I can now spend time following yet another forum.by dag14 - Other Sports

Too bad it was only an exhibition game. Cornell would start the season #1 in SHG with 3. Current first place team has 2 SGH in 6 games....by dag14 - Hockey
Re: 2022-23 Women's Schedule - 1 year ago
The women crush McGill in their home opener 6-0. At least 2 SHG but since I was multi-tasking while watching the game, I can't offer up any other reliable stats.by dag14 - Hockey
Re: Rankings manipulation - 1 year ago
I was on the faculty in AgEc/ARME/AEM the first year that we entered AACSB -- the organization that accredits business schools. AACSB uses metrics similar to US News but a significant factor in their ranking system is the rank assigned by the deans of the member business schools. Cornell debuted at NUMBER FIVE! The deans of most of the other 400+ member schools really had no idea of what kindby dag14 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Men's Soccer 2022 - 1 year ago
The Athletic Department monitors the number of class days missed for athletic contests and travel. The hockey team leaves on Thurs day for weekend away games all season long so why can't the soccer team do it once in a while? There are no classes Labor Day so being away Monday doesn't count against them. When and where else is the soccer supposed to play non-conference games against qualityby dag14 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2023 - CU recruits rank vs top schools - 1 year ago
I know the Pannell back story well: I was his faculty advisor at Cornell.... I remember serving on a panel during Trustee Council weekend with Dave Petramala in his first or second season in which we discussed the challenges of recruiting in the Ivy League. I didn't know him well at that time but I was particularly impressed with his candor as he noted that Cornell might not be the best fitby dag14 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2023 - CU recruits rank vs top schools - 1 year ago
I don't believe Rob Pannell was even ranked by IL so I take all of the above with a grain of salt. And it is important to remember that lax is a team game. Ten people on the field who are willing and able to support each other is likely to guarantee success more often than having ten selfish AA's on the field.by dag14 - Other Sports

I saw a photo of Jake MacDonald with his dad and the Stanley Cup so the fact that he was rostered but did not play in the Finals apparently was enough for him to be seen as deserving of a day with the Cup. Way to go Jake!by dag14 - Hockey
