Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: North Country @ Central NY - 13 years ago
Trotsky Yale's been looking pretty mortal, lately. Remaining RS opponents, games above/below .500: +0 Clarkson -6 St. Lawrence +7 at Union +4 at RPI -9 Harvard +4 Dartmouth -3 at Brown +8 at Yale 4 of the final games are against the top of the league and 3 of those are on the road. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may. I know that I've been rather rosy in some of my comments lateby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: RPI, Union at Lynah - possible outcome - 13 years ago
scoop85 6-2 might be asking a lot, considering that we have to play RPI, Yale and Union on the road. But it never hurts to aim high! Our newly found (remembered?) ability to tie on the road might come in handy. No shame in a hard-fought road tie. I'd put our most likely path to "6-2" as two ties, a freak win, and a freak loss. So, 5-1-2. I'll prognosticate ties at RPI and Yale,by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: RPI, Union at Lynah - possible outcome - 13 years ago
Nothing like replying to yourself. Anyway, the ECAC leader primed for a fall? Princeton. Next week they play Union and RPI for the first time this season. Honestly, I expect us to be ahead of or tied with Princeton by the end of next weekend. A first-round bye is looking ever more reasonable. Looking at Greg's chart of ECAC points by place, one can note that in top-6 vs. bottom-6 seasonby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell 2 Dartmouth 2 (final--OT) - 13 years ago
Trotsky ajh258On the other hand, the student fans at Dartmouth were particularly rude, and they were a constant nuisance during the game. For instance, during our alma mater, some of these brutes stood in front of our pep band, waved their hands around in the air like idiots, and pretended to conduct. That was particularly disrespectful and classless. In addition, a lot of them kept walking pastby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Weekend v. Colgate - 13 years ago
The only thing separating this team from a top-4 finish is its god-awful power play. We've got the 4th-best team defense in the league and the 6th-best team offense, that with most of our goals coming even strength. From Thomas's game story in the Journal: "Basically, coach has been harping us about getting to the net," Axell said. "We've gotta have net presence. ... Puck justby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: RPI, Union at Lynah - possible outcome - 13 years ago
TrotskyWe'll see whether they can win the games they ought to next weekend. Agreed. Indeed, if one looks at the various schedules and takes a quick gander at JTW's ECAC-restricted Bradley-Terry, one notices that, if we can win the games we should, we are right in the thick of it for a top 4 finish—surprise, surprise. For examples, Clarkson has not played Yale yet, and Princeton has played nby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell 2 Princeton 1 - 13 years ago
Josh '99 Great job by the men to bounce back and take the lead again immediately after Princeton tied it (on what was a fluky goal, a shot through traffic took a deflection somewhere and rainbowed up and in). Garman played a very good game - I wouldn't necessarily say a *great* game, only because I don't know that he made many spectacular saves, if any, but he did make *all* the easy saves. billhoward Had this been Cornell vs. BC, Maine, UNH, Notre Dame (good choice given their alumni base), TOSU, it might have been 10,000, Cornell did not promote this the way it did the MSG BU games. I'd add to and cut from that list. "BC fans sit on hands" and don't show well outside of Massachusetts. It's a long way from Maine to the tri-state area. Notre Dame fans will show up foby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Brown at Cornell - 13 years ago
Towerroad Kyle, I think you have hit the nail on the head. There has been a pretty steady migration of the rules, particularly boarding, that has made physical play along the boards much riskier from a penalty perspective. That, unfortunately, has been one of our traditional strengths. This change has in turn given an advantage to fast, puck handling players who no longer have to be as concernedby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell 1 Princeton 1 Etobicoke 1 (final--overtime) - 13 years ago
Al DeFlorio jtwcornell91 I think a lot of the band was in NYC for the Columbia game and parade, and therefore on the road for the start of the hockey game.A thoroughly depressing day for those band members. Meh. The band always wins.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Paul Milstein Hall - 13 years ago
Kyle Rose My point is simply that forcing people into a system that doesn't meet their needs as they define them, not as you define them, is immoral. That said, we don't have to help them make bad choices: given the world we live in, I'm all for ending government subsidization of roads and private vehicles. That means: bring the troops home, let oil become a free market and rise to its naturalby Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead

Kyle Rose Scersk '97After all, a good bus system is a great alternative to walking or cycling for those Ithacating days. How many times have you stood at a bus stop in 35° rain, waiting 20 minutes for a late bus? There's a reason why the neighborhoods in Boston/Cambridge/Somerville served by the subway are 50% more expensive than those served only by the bus system. Well... I have. Re: Paul Milstein Hall - 13 years ago
KeithK Short version: a lot of folks consider ease of commute to be a greater quality of life issue than density. Is it worth the expense to cater to these people, faculty, staff and/or students? I don't know but I don't think it's a slam dunk. (Well, it probably is if you're talking about undergrads.) And for the record, I grew up in Manhattan and love walkable, dense environments. Re: Paul Milstein Hall - 13 years ago
Kyle Rose Scersk '97 Parking is as endangered as it should be; universities should be for walkers and cyclists. Thank you for advocating forcing your preferences on other people, because what this world really needs is more busybodies telling other people how to live their lives. And I say this as someone who cycles to work every day. If you want to bike or walk around campus, go ahead: thereby Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead

Parking is as endangered as it should be; universities should be for walkers and cyclists. There's always A Lot and the bus. I may be off base, but I doubt that it's in faculty contracts that they have an inalienable right to be able to waddle out of their cars and be in their offices in < 5 min.by Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Paul Milstein Hall - 13 years ago
I feel sorry for the Fine Arts Library, which has lost much natural light and any view. The building just created a bunch of interior rooms in Sibley out of what used to be rooms with nice windows and light. Ummm, atrium and skylights? I have the feeling that nobody, I mean nobody, will ever get out on the green roof. Yet, somebody might: better put up a fence. The cantilever is a bit riby Scersk '97 - John Spencer Is Dead

Starchitect, Starchitect, what are they feeding you? The San Francisco Federal Building. Looking forward to another ugly, misshapen box that will be hailed as "revolutionary." You know what would be revolutionary? A quality building made of quality materials that is intended to make life easy for the humans that use it rather than as some intellectual, "artistic" enterby Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: Riley Nash (CAR) - 13 years ago
amerks127 In all seriousness, I'm looking to Sean Collins as the forward to break out next season. With Gallagher and R. Nash gone, he'll likely be the first line center at the onset with Devin and Kennedy on the wings. I agree on Collins. He has great potential to be a breakout scorer, and, as you note, we're very thin down the middle with Nash's departure. For that same reason, I would taby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Riley Nash (CAR) - 13 years ago
Kyle RoseNow, how about that rebuilding year ahead? In all seriousness, I still expect us to be solid contenders to finish first in the regular season this next year. While it will certainly be a rebuilding year for the offense, we return eight regular skaters (Devin, Kennedy, Jillson, Roeszler, Collins, Esposito, Miller, Nicholls) and have added some bruisers (DeSwardt = Bâby?, Bitz?;by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Potential NCAA Rule Changes - 13 years ago
Trotsky I don't think anybody mentioned the change in the hand pass rule. I hate it. It takes what was previously a question of fact: did the hand pass occur, and changes it to a question of intent: was the hand pass intentional. The reason given for doing so, "too many false hand passes are being called," seems weak when compared to introducing another element of referee discretionby Scersk '97 - Hockey

I can't imagine how this transition could have been quicker or could have gone more smoothly. One hopes that if, say, a similar transition were to happen in the hockey ranks, it would also go just as well.by Scersk '97 - Other Sports

gored I think that, whether or not Riley leaves, we will a bit down next year before returning to form in 2 years. And "a bit down," in this case, may be a solid run at another ECAC championship and tempered but realistic national aspirations. I doubt Garman's an awful goalie, and Iles may be a phenom. I like how our defense looks for next year. We will sorely miss Kreuger, but,by Scersk '97 - Hockey
