Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: ECAC Inferiority - 13 years ago
RichH I don't care if it's Clarkson-SLU in Ottawa, or Cornell-Colgate in Newark or Union-RPI "Halloween Faceoff," this in-league "non-conference" inbreeding should stop. Non-conference games should be against non-conference foes. OOC games are limited, and increasingly important for SOS considerations for at-large bids. Plus, it can only help the league, even if some of thoseby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: ECAC Inferiority - 13 years ago
Without going into the whys, I'd like to address the whats. I'd like to see: (1a) Back to the 8-team ECAC playoffs. Go home, 9 through 12. And no "play-in" BS. (And, since we can't seem to decide on an adequate environment for the semis and championship, let's just make it three weeks of best-of-3 at the higher seed.) or: (1b) Back to the 8-team playoffs as above, but alby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Penn lax- Princeton loses again - 13 years ago
billhoward Will there be any Princeton players left to play us at season's end? (Probably yes.) One wonders whether we will be presented with a chance to end Princeton's season nice and early on April 30th.by Scersk '97 - Other Sports
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
One of the things that impresses me about the Yale D is how, whenever they're clearing the zone or sweeping up a rebound, they're moving somewhere. There's motion out of the zone rather than just standing around.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
underskill assuming the score does hold up, it does lend some support to the idea that the way for ECAC teams to compete nationally is through defense and goaltending, b/c no matter how talented you are offensively, it won't hold up against the WCHA teams' skill level. You know, I was thinking instead about how UMD doesn't look all that skilled but looks hard-nosed and, to use that word, "by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
underskill any close call like that hit is going to go that way given the crackdown on headshots now though. Besides, watching Yale choke this away is pretty amusing. I would normally agree, but the refs just did a wonderful job of bringing me firmly into Yale's camp.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
Wow, that was a bullshit call. O'Neill had his hands down, and there's no way that he was using his helmet to hit the guy.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
You know, Kyle, I generally enjoy your steady devil's advocacy on this board, but you can be so unremittingly negative. The latter is not necessarily part and parcel of the former. Rather than harping on the inadequacies of RPI and, as you so often argue by specious extension, the ECAC as a whole, why don't you marvel a bit at the skill of NoDak? They're the best team I've seen so far—skilleby Scersk '97 - Hockey

The announcers completely missed how amazing that Knight goal was. He intentionally back-foot kicked it back to his stick.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
And it's also starting to remind me a lot of our game vs. NoDak in 1997. RPI is fighting hard, but NoDak is just a bit too much for them to handle.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
This is turning into a rough game, and most of the hits have been relatively clean.by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Jacob '06 Scersk '97 scoop85 Union now down 2-0 with 13 min left. Another ECAC team that underperforms? But, honestly, if Yale makes it past Air Force, I can't see whoever wins this game winning against the Bulldogs. That was really confusing b/c UMD are also the Bulldogs. Unintentional, but yes.by Scersk '97 - Hockey

I hate agreeing with Barry, but Union looks asleep. That's not the team I saw dismantle us in Schenectady.by Scersk '97 - Hockey

It's at the point where the Dutchmen are more likely to score a shorty than a power-play goal.by Scersk '97 - Hockey

Seems Barry doesn't know his penalty signs. Slash, Barry, slash.by Scersk '97 - Hockey

It may be that the power play is where "rust" shows the worst. It's all about timing; after all, power plays are known for being streaky.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
Trotsky That was on the strength of being up a man for 6 of the first 10 mins. True, but they've had better possession 5-on-5 as well. Now if they can just work on that supposedly fantastic powerplay... since they're going to need it, as Kyle noted.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
Union up 10-1 on shots over UMD in the 1st. Guess it wasn't just us... boy, do they remind me of some other team I've seen at some point... some time ago...by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: NCAA regionals 2011 - 13 years ago
You forget Clarkson, Harvard, and SLU in the final four in 1991, 1994, and 2000, respectively; indeed, you probably meant "in the championship game" in referencing Colgate in 1990. I am rooting for Union too. And I'm rooting for RPI to stir up at least some chaos in the WZHA bracket. (I.e., I don't think they really have a chance.) Yale? Eanhhh... Re: Atlantic City-ECAC hockey attendance fiasco - 13 years ago
Really too bad that the Glens Falls Civic Center isn't a little bigger. Greater Glens Falls (including Lake George) would seem to afford many of the advantages of Lake Placid (nice location, "taking over the town," perhaps flexible bar admissions, not a hole) in a more accessible location. It's also pretty much equidistant (driving-time-wise) from the ECAC's sometime "holy trinitby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Cu - 0 Yale - 6 after two - 13 years ago
Towerroad Scersk '97 If Allain can scratch together a team that will have anything more than a mediocre season after losing that much D, I'll hail him as the second coming. Well, that certainly makes this a post worth saving. Ah, but of what would I hail him as the second coming? Of "Schafer," i.e., an ECAC coach that can sustain his program at a high level year after year. Howby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Trotsky To be fair, Yale has been great for three years. However, they have a problem: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yale | Overall - 34 GP (27- 6- 1 .809) | Conf Only - 22 GP (17- 4- 1 .795) | Career ------------------------------------|-------by Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Goalie Choice for Atlantic City - 13 years ago
scoop85 One striking (and consistent) theme was how often we were significantly outshot by the opponents, often by a 2 to 1 margin. Ironically, last night the shots were only something like 28-21, which was no reflection on the actual game itself. In our best seasons, we would dominate in SOG as well as puck possession. This team never came close in either category. All-in-all, a bit of a miracby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Jeff Hopkins '82 nyc94 billhoward At some point, "nice guy" gets drowned out by "4-30-4 season." Bets on when they reach that conclusion at Harvard? Considering how slow they were to dump Maz, probably a little while longer. Wasn't Maz more a case of "two league championships and three trips to the NCAAs after rebuilding a program decimated by Tomassoni" drowneby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference - 13 years ago
css228 If you're going to reform the ECAC, you reform the real ECAC as the Premier with Providence, BU, BC, UNH, Maine, and Northeastern, The Ivies, Union (replacing Army because their rivalry with RPI is great) RPI, Colgate, Vermont, SLU and Clarkson for histories sake. Also if that were to happen we'd need more NC games. Yeah, sure, but that's history. It's a history I understand and appreciby Scersk '97 - Hockey
Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference - 13 years ago
Re-form the old ECAC (or perhaps ECAC+) as a promotion/relegation two- (three-? four-?) division league. Get the top division a steady TV contract and throw the bottom (2? 3?) divisions a few televised game bones every year. Then there would be something in the east that would generate enough excitement to balance a BTHC. (I.e., who wants to watch yet another game between BC and UNH? Just likby Scersk '97 - Hockey

Man, that second goal, especially the pass, was a thing of beauty. That kind of tic-tac 2-on-1 that we never seem to score on.by Scersk '97 - Hockey
