Beeeej It's the last thing I wanted to do, but it was time to make this thread unsticky. while you’re at it I think it’s time to unstick the 2018-2019 expectations thread too...by KenP - Hockey

Re: Trotsky's Fantasy Post-Season - 4 years ago
ursusminor I liked the result of the RPI-Harvard series on the USCHO forum a lot better. Here is the Cornell summary: Princeton @ Cornell - Game 2: The Big Red looked to put away the Tigers in game 2 of their quarterfinal series in the ECAC. Cornell got off to a great start, as Tristan Mullin put the Big Red in the lead on his snipe midway through the first period. Mullin then added a seby KenP - Hockey

Friendly reminder. My app said next billing is on March 15. If you are like me and have had a monthly subscription to follow Cornell athletics... now would be a good time to cancel.by KenP - Hockey
Re: Season's Over - 4 years ago
ugarte Trotsky Jim Hyla Still looks nice to go to the USCHO site and see those 2 CU symbols for #1 in Men's and Women's D-1. Hope they stay there THROUGH next Spring. Fixed.look if you're gonna fix it ... Next iteration would imply either nonstop dominance through the end of college hockey as we know it... or acknowledgement that we are already there.by KenP - Hockey

underskill toddlose underskill and maybe award the NC to the team that finished #1 in the polls... How about a two day tournament with the top four in the pairwise? fine by me, just make sure Barron hasn't signed w the Rangers before that You're assuming NHL season continues....by KenP - Hockey

Re: Awards 2019-20 - 4 years ago
Give My Regards Don't know if this has been pointed out elsewhere, but in addition to being Cornell's first-ever four-time All-Ivy first-team selection, Yanni has played in every game of his Cornell career -- 133 so far. Jeremy Downs holds the record for games played in a Cornell career with 138. I fear the woofing gods, so somebody else can do the math. Best case for number of games: We haby KenP - Hockey
Re: 2020-02-28: Cornell vs St. Lawrence - 4 years ago
I'm torn part of me was hoping Cornell would go into tomorrow with more than pride on the line. I'm really hoping they don't let up against a dangerous Clarkson team.by KenP - Hockey

nshapiro Trotsky Swampy Which is the bigger trap game: CU vs SLU or CLK vs COL?Good question. SLU did us a huge favor in slamming Harvard but I'd say it's still more likely a trap because it's at home. You're always more on your guard when you travel. That would actually be a cool analysis: do the really huge upsets tend to happen more frequently at home? I wonder how much osorojo would charby KenP - Hockey

CU2007 So if both we and Clarkson win Friday, is the top seed on the line Saturday night? Yes. Cornell would need a win or tie.by KenP - Hockey
Re: Cornell Women Hockey - 4 years ago
Good news is the women defeated Union 5-3 this afternoon. Bad news is they gave up 3 goals in the 3rd period including 2 PPG.by KenP - Hockey

Jeff Hopkins '82 billhoward KGR11 I've critiqued the Pairwise Probability Matrix the last couple of weeks, but I think it's worth stating that it is WAY better suited to answer the question posed in this week's USCHO bracketology post (Which bubble teams have a shot at playing for an NCAA hockey national championship?). The matrix never knows which shot hits the fricking post and goes in. Red pby KenP - Hockey
Re: 2020 ECAC Playoff Possibilities Stuff - 4 years ago
Swampy Dafatone scoop85 Even if CLK were to say, lose to Harvard, and we ran the table until the finale, running the script confirmed that CLK would hold the tiebreaker if they beat us in the last game and we end up with the same points. The head-to-head would be a split, but CLK would have 1 more win. Unless some weird thing happened where they pick up two or more ties on their way to that resby KenP - Hockey

Re: Union & RPI Weekend News - 4 years ago
My impression (and concern) is that we are letting teams back in the game because we start losing the one-on-one battles and end up with odd man rushes and general majority of play in our defensive zone. That sounds to me like hallmarks of losing focus, fatigue/lack of conditioning, or some related issue. Please correct me if I am wrong.by KenP - Hockey
Re: Bracketology for 2020 NCAAs - 4 years ago
adamw DafatoneCould things be more complex? Sure. You could use goal differentials or advanced possession/shot metrics to estimate team quality. You could also weight for recency (Cornell's been weaker over the last month or so than the rest of the season, so maybe we're "worse" than our total record). But that's all more complicated and not necessarily more accurate. I do actually waby KenP - Hockey
Re: Bracketology for 2020 NCAAs - 4 years ago
BearLover adamw RobbThat’s why there would be a range of final PWR ratings for each team - in some of the trials, Cornell will be unlucky and lose a bunch of games to worse teams, and in some trials they won’t. That’s where the histogram comes in - so you can see the range of possibilities and get an estimate of how likely each of those possibilities appears to be (again, assuming that each teamby KenP - Hockey
Re: Bracketology for 2020 NCAAs - 4 years ago
Adam, I have a suggestion. Cornell has guaranteed itself an ECAC home playoff series, i.e. our worst-case ECAC rank is 8. Can you do something similar for NCAA participation? Specifically: Create a worst-case simulation for each team. Set their games to losses, rerun the Monte Carlo simulation for the rest of the field, and grab the lowest PWR from the modified simulation. Add that as aby KenP - Hockey
Re: Bracketology for 2020 NCAAs - 4 years ago
Cornell's KRACH SOS is 30; Other than Clarkson (42, also ECAC) you have to go down to #17 Lowell to find a weaker SOS. What this means is that we are on a steep slope and need to keep our footing. One "bad" loss or tie will drop us more than a bad loss by North Dakota or Minnesota State etc. Our percentages in these simulations will hold steady with wins but can change very quickly wby KenP - Hockey
Re: Bracketology for 2020 NCAAs - 4 years ago
Interesting... At this point it is down to a 59-team race. Even though their PWR is higher than both Princeton and St. Lawrence... Vermont has 0.0% chance to make the NC$$ tournament.by KenP - Hockey
Re: Polls 2019-20 - 4 years ago
Swampy Well, I do remember hearing stories of how Ned would have his teams run or skate sprints after a particularly bad outing, albeit maybe not at 5 AM. And maybe what I heard was just rumor. And yes, we're heavy with underclassmen, although it's becoming somewhat of a cliché to say that by mid-season there are no rookies. Still, this begs the question of how an expert coach would take thby KenP - Hockey
Re: Polls 2019-20 - 4 years ago
upprdeck You wonder what some of these numbers would be if the PK was operating a bit better. On a power play, a player gets a minus when his team surrenders a short-handed goal, but doesn't get a plus if his team scores. On the penalty kill, he gets a plus if his team scores a short-handed goal, but doesn't get a minus if he surrenders a power-play goal. (ref: )by KenP - Hockey

Cornell retains the #2 spot and garners one 1st place vote. Biggest changes in the poll reflect bad weekend results from both Boston College and Providence.by KenP - Hockey
