Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: 2020-02-09: Cornell 5 Colgate 3 - 4 years ago
Dafatone Trotsky For the 6th season in Mike's tenure, we've struck red. It's weird to think that we have one loss on the season and still hit red later than a couple years ago. Two losses...by KenP - Hockey

Trotsky Please, sir. May I have some more? If I were the opposing team last night’s performance would scare the Dickens out of me.by KenP - Hockey
Re: 2020-02-01: Cornell 5 Princeton 3 - 4 years ago
Trotsky In any case, hopefully we'll be the proverbial hot knife through butter the next four weekends. But as we've seen (as we know from decades of this) there are very few walk (skate?) overs. Yes.by KenP - Hockey
Re: 2020-02-01: Cornell 5 Princeton 3 - 4 years ago
Trotsky KenPStats are almost guaranteed to improve. Between now and Lake Placid we have 10 games with 9 of those being against significantly weaker teams. (Clarkson 2/29 is the lone exception.) Ahem. My comment was about opponent PWR or other rating, not about the difficulties of winning a game in the ECAC Date -- Opponent -- PWR 07 Fri -- Colgate -- 40 08 Sat -- at Colgate -- 40 14 Fri -by KenP - Hockey
Re: 2020-02-01: Cornell 5 Princeton 3 - 4 years ago
Jim Hyla Swampy osorojo U.D.: That's pretty good hockey - but not as good as Clarkson's 92.8 PK versus Cornell's 76.8% PK (cited above). We have to consider the whole season so far overall and in context. The team started out relying on several first-year players to fill spots as defensemen. Its defense was really good 6 v 6, but the PK left much to be desired. What I observed, perhaps incorrecby KenP - Hockey
Re: Pairwise tweak idea - 4 years ago
Tom Lento jtwcornell91 The problem with giving more weight to head-to-head or even common opponents is that they focus on just a few games rather than a team's performance over the entire season. It's good that it's difficult for the anecdotes to overwhelm the rest of the data. I agree with this, but I think the reason this comes up every now and again is because there are two different ways oby KenP - Hockey

Cornell continues at the #1 spot. More clear lead this week with 40 first place votes.by KenP - Hockey
Re: 2020-01-24: Cornell 3 Dartmouth 2 - 4 years ago
Chris H82 Was the crowd as loud and sustained in their cheering as it sounded on the radio? Or was that just wishful hearing on my part? From my seat in Section E there were lots of quiet periods. Maybe it’s just been awhile. But I’m hoping tomorrow will be a more sustained noise level.by KenP - Hockey

Re: Lynah Documentary This Weekend - 4 years ago
Beeeej Okay, now I REALLY hope the weather forecast improves. We're planning to head up this weekend, but we won't if the expected snow is likely to cause a problem getting back to Brooklyn. Forecast is trending warmer. Mostly rain.by KenP - Hockey

Thanks for the parking advice. How are the concessions from a price and heartburn perspective? I'm assuming we cannot bring food in with us?by KenP - Hockey
Visiting Lynah guide - 4 years ago
I’m planning my first visit to Lynah in over 20 years. Dartmouth and maybe Sucks. Looking for advice to plan the trip. Where to park and when to get there? Best sections for seating? Easy food choices? (I’ll be with my daughter and niece so no bars) What cheers are most common nowadays? Any other thoughts for a nice weekend visit? Thanks for any suggestions. I’ll probably havby KenP - Hockey
Re: 3 straight weekends - 4 years ago
So just curious... small sample size and all.... what is their record when having to fight off one or more major penalties?by KenP - Hockey
Re: 3 straight weekends - 4 years ago
osorojo I suspect it's easier to motivate a team with a mediocre ranking to focus on a second weekend game after winning the first than it is to motivate a top-ranked team to focus on a second weekend game after winning the first - especially if the first (victory) game was against a high ranked opponent. I call BS there. A highly successful team will treat each weekend as a tournament. Win botby KenP - Hockey
Re: Pairwise tweak idea - 4 years ago
Again, let's preface the discussion that PWR is going to stay. We have a system that is very similar to RPI. By definition the other comparisons exist to address "intangibles" which may not show up in RPI alone. Common Opponents - the net result of this comparison is to adjust for non-conference play. We beat Michigan State therefore we have a let up against the rest of the Big 10by KenP - Hockey
Re: Pairwise tweak idea - 4 years ago
I’m thinking of this specific type of situation with Cornell-Dartmouth. David beats Goliath twice. RPI & CoP will both go to Goliath. Goliath wins comparison.by KenP - Hockey
Pairwise tweak idea - 4 years ago
I will preface this post by saying I fully endorse KRACH as a better system. Right now the PWR system is so heavy weighted on adjusted-RPI. Therefore the goal of considering CoP and H2H comparisons is to “overcome” that bias. Here’s the concern. For example what if Dartmouth wins the second game against us in a few weeks? The PWR will be tied 2-2 and the stronger RPI team still wins. In factby KenP - Hockey

Re: IVY League standings - 4 years ago
Jim Hyla Cop at Lynah Just looked up the IVY league hockey standings and noticed that they are awarding 3 pts for a victory and 1 point for a tie. Have they always done this as opposed to the traditional 2 pts for a win and 1 pt for a tie ? Dartmouth 5-1 0.833 15 Harvard 4-1-1 0.750 13 Cornell 4-1 0.800 12 Brown 1-4 0.200 3 Yale 1-4 0.200 3 Princeton 0-4-1by KenP - Hockey

How best to follow the game if I do not want to pay for Flo? Is anyone going to be on slack-chat tonight?by KenP - Hockey
Re: Fortress Invitational - 4 years ago
Jim Hyla I can't find much from the schools, their papers, or the LV papers. CBR posts: Ohio State starts with: and then posts: Providence Friars hasn't yet posted anything. Nor yet from West Point. Nothing from the college newspapers. Nothing yet from the Sun. The OSU Lantern has nothing. Providence College paper The Cowl has very little on their hockey team at all.by KenP - Hockey

Re: Polls 2019-20 - 4 years ago
Cornell was taken out of the mix because our KRACH cannot be calculated. What does that mean for teams that played us? I assume those games not included in their KRACH/SOS calculation... which artificially would lower their SOS... which in turn lowers our apparent SOS. My guess is we will see an uptick in both (us and opponent) SOS if/when Cornell has a non-infinite rating.by KenP - Hockey

Swampy BC 4 / Harvard 2. Harvard is no longer undefeated. I remember hearing the Harvard goalie left the last game with what looked like a groin injury. Any updates on him? Did that impact the BC game?by KenP - Hockey
