Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: [Off-topic] Lacrosse - 22 years ago
That season-opening loss to Virginia was played April 1 in Charlottesville. Kane mentions what a disadvantage that early date was to Cornell because--with no artificial turf at Schoellkopf at the time--Cornell had yet to practice outdoors. Today April 1 is mid-season, in part due to the changed academic calendar. (I would take finals on Memorial Day and graduated on a sunny June 14.) One resuby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: [Off-topic] Lacrosse - 22 years ago
According to Bob Kane's Good Sports, going into the tournament Army was ranked first and Cornell eighth in the polls, which I think were conducted by the USILA--the anointers of the national champion prior to 1971. My recollection is that back in those days the NCAA basketball tournament was much more "regionalized," too. Incidentally, Cornell finished the 1972 season with a 10-3 recoby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: 1971 tournament - 22 years ago
Well, the first round games were Cornell-Brown and Army-Hofstra in the "north," and Navy-Virginia and Maryland-Air Force (obligatory western team, clearly regarded as the weakest team in the tournament--Maryland 10, AF 1) in the "south." In the semifinals, Maryland beat Navy and Cornell beat Army, 17-16, and the rest is history. As I recall, the pairings were specifically doby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

The old Big Ten Rose Bowl tiebreaker was interesting: the team that had been to the Rose Bowl more recently stayed home. Might be better than a coin toss.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: All-America Teams - 22 years ago
Having two first-teamers in a season is really something. First time for us since Dadswell and Nieuwendyk in 1986 (when five of the six East A-A's were ECAC), I'm pretty sure. Congrats, guys!by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Midseason review and Ivy tiebreaker - 22 years ago
Thank you, Hillel, for an amazingly thorough assessment. I'll get my first view of this year's team Saturday at Harvard, barring a monsoon. Someone posted earlier today on LaxPower Forum that, in the case of a three-way tie for the Ivy League title, the NCAA tournament berth is determined by drawing one of the three from a hat! Re: [Off-topic] Lacrosse - 22 years ago
I think you need six teams in a league to qualify for an autobid. Maybe their expenses are being "subsidized" by the other teams in order to fill out the "sixsome." Fairfield does in fact play all of the other five this season, travel issues or not.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: [Off-topic] Lacrosse - 22 years ago
And some of the autobids are as controversial as the MAAC autobid in hockey (in particular, the Great Western Conference, which includes--believe it or not--Fairfield, in addition to Air Force, Butler, Denver, Notre Dame, and Ohio State). There's the same groundswell of support to move from a twelve- to a sixteen-team tournament to minimize the effects of the autobids.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: 1995 defeat of Princeton - 22 years ago
No, John, there were eight teams and no autobids back then. In 1971 the NCAA had fully regional "regionals," which generated the same controversy as this year's hockey regionals. Cornell, Army, Brown, and a-team-I-can't-remember were in the north "regional" (I think the games were played on the campuses of one of the teams playing in each game, but I could be wrong.) and fouby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: NCAA Semifinal Times - 22 years ago
Wisconsin beat Denver in the 1973 championship game after winning the Friday semifinal--which featured Dean Talafous's infamous last second tying goal against Cornell. Bertrand was really spooked about having to play on Friday night, and his attempt to rest his top guns for Saturday aided the Wisconsin third period rally from 5-2 down. At some point the NCAA might make a semifinal doubleheaderby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: Nice looking program from '68 - 22 years ago
This seller is also auctioning a 1953 NCAA hockey championship program. The ebay listing includes a picture of the roster pages for Minnesota and RPI. There are 17 names on the Minnesota page (including the great John Mayasich) and 12 on the RPI page: seven forwards, three d-men, and two goalies. And the games were played at Colorado Springs altitude. He is also auctioning programs fby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: NCAA Semifinal Times - 22 years ago
It avoids the appearance of charging $90 for the semifinal games. John's point about reselling tickets for the "other" semi is a good one, also. With one admission and no pass-outs (like at the regionals), the arena might be half-filled for each semi, a la Worcester last Saturday.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: NCAA Semifinal Times - 22 years ago
They're trying to avoid having one semifinal played the night before the championship game, as was done in the early '70s--while still having a separate admission for each semifinal. Way back when, the winner of the Thursday night semifinal got a day of rest while the Friday winner got to play again the next night. Ergo, Thursday afternoon and evening semifinals. So Friday becomes Hobey dayby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Spencer Penrose Award - 22 years ago
The USCHO crowd seem to think it's between Whitehead, Gwozdecky, and Gadowsky. Whitehead appears to be the emotional choice, but he wasn't voted Hockey East's COTY. Interesting that the Frozen Four coaches are automatic finalists, whereas conference tournaments are specifically not considered in conference COTY selection (at least not in the ECAC). Selection, I believe, is made by a vote of thby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Men's and women's polo have won a slew of national championships, but not NCAA-sanctioned. Crew has won a bunch of IRA titles, but, again, not NCAA. Cornell wrestlers have won eight or ten individual weight classes at NCAAs, but never the team championship.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

NCAA/Ivy imbroglio - 22 years ago
It was an NCAA/Ivy dispute of some sort. All Ivy teams were banned from NCAA tournaments that year, as I recall. Something to do with Ivy standards being higher than what the NCAA was looking for anyway, so the Ivies weren't going to go along with whatever it was the NCAA wanted from them. Nothing to do with Cornell in particular. BU and Clarkson were locks for the NCAA final four as Cornellby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
