Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: "What do you want more of from eLynah" poll discussion - 21 years ago
My donation goes directly to the hockey program--or at least that's my intent--so I'm not going to stop making it. But I'm really pissed at this wrongheaded decision. Could you tell?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Scoreboard - 21 years ago
It doesn't sound like there's an "appearance" problem, but more a "use" problem. Having a SOG feature but not being able to use it correctly does make one scratch one's head, however.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Better now. Agree with the retina impact observation.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Mine's the same way. Almost looks like...shudder...crimson. Have we been hacked??by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

For a time Ingalls had barking bulldogs. Maybe we could have growling bears.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Scoreboard - 21 years ago
My sense is, since the era of CEO Charlie Moore, athletics has lost the capacity to listen. My experience in business has been that few CEOs have functioning ears.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

The York game wasn't broadcast, so there's no evidence, yet. But Adam did a capable job doing color with Grady during a game or two last season.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Scoreboard - 21 years ago
It isn't clear to me just what the purpose of a shots-on-goal counter is if it isn't updated real-time. They're always announced at period end anyway. The displaying of nonsense like "make some noise" on the message screen is just one more indication that Cornell's athletics administration is simply totally out of touch with Cornell's fans. Really very sad. Now if there's anything tby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: LISTEN TO OSU GAME FREE! - 21 years ago
Now which school would you have expected to be first to charge for Internet broadcast of its athletic events: OSU or Cornell?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Is this the same Fulton who did such a great job in our game at RPI last year?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Scoreboard - 21 years ago
Bravo, Greg. Well said. The key word in Sir Winnie's quote is "forward." The initial usages of the scrolling characters feature appear to be taking us in the opposite direction.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Sounds really bush. Courtesy of the same dorks who gave us the new bear and CornellPass. Yuck. What's next? A bell or a siren?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: The Red and White Game - 21 years ago
I'll even take some very small amount of "credit" for Jay's hiring. Seeing the success BU was having with Boston-area kids in the early 70s, with considerable effort I enticed Dick Bertrand to come to Boston and dragged him to a few high school games. It opened his eyes and he hired an assistant, Riley, with a Boston-area connection. I wouldn't say Cornell has had a lot of recruiby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Age, we should all be thanking you for giving such a great place to hang out. Kudoes to you.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: our esteemed goalie - 21 years ago
True, Mark, but I don't think anyone really took seriously that he'd be a big star in the pros. College goalies just didn't do that then, no matter how good they were in college. IIRC, Tony O and Dryden were the first to really get to the Vezina/All-Star level in the NHL. To his everlasting credit--and I forget his name so I can't give him any--one Boston scribe writing before the series preby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: our esteemed goalie - 21 years ago
Shows the impact Ken's performance against the Bruins in the 1971 playoffs had on the Boston sports community. People here simply could not believe it at the time. And they still remember 31-plus years later.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Jason Kuczmanski - 21 years ago
Yes, he'll always be remembered for that lone goal, with a non-counting assist to Svoboda for riding the Harvard guy off the puck causing it to slide right onto Jason's stick. I hope he's still in school. If so, the good news is he keeps any financial aid he may have been getting.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Could it have been my neighbor's son, Jay Riley, who, IIRC, played at Watson Rink?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: options to this Sunday's game - 21 years ago
It's interesting to contrast the ham-handed way this CornellPass "idiocy" (to steal big red apple's very apt term) was handled with the way the the Internet broadcasts were initiated five or so years ago (and the way Age handled the funding of HockeyCam last year, by the way). IIRC, Tom Hamill tested the waters here for interest, then approached the athletics department suggestingby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Age, are you expecting to have HockeyCam running for the regular season home games? Is the CornellPass nonsense going to restrict HockeyCam in any way?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

My wife's just back today from 10 days in Richmond. They were skittish there after that last shooting in a Richmond suburb.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Arthur Mintz '71 wrote: For many years (Al, Jim and Ken will remember this), the only number worn by goalies at Cornell was #1. Both the starter and the backup wore it. Right. And sometimes two backups. In those days you couldn't "tell the players" even with a scorecard. People kept confusing Ken Dryden with George Swan.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Anyone figured out yet why Vesce and Iggulden were coaching instead of playing?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Another rough night for the ECAC.... - 21 years ago
Mark wrote: Well, BU didn't want you ECAC folks to have a completely lost Friday night, so it decided to shoot the majority of pucks into the legs, arms and body of the UVM goalie. That BU was able to hit Conschafter's legs, arms, and body--moving as quickly as they were all night long--with such remarkable accuracy is a real tribute to their shooting skills.
