ugarte BearLover Trotsky BearLover Nice OT win over North Dakota for Miami, which helps us in the Pairwise...but isn't a first-round road game vs ND becoming increasingly likely? If they're gonna rape us then they will. wutgreg's being hilariously edgy again and it's probably you who doesn't get it I think his joke is historically backwards (and also historically bad) thoughby BearLover - Hockey

Jim Hyla The hard part is everyone complaining about what is out there, including Adam's, and no one has an answer, or is willing to help. I think it's a lot of fun to look at these models, but I don't have a clue about what to do (easily) to improve them, so I enjoy what's there and keep my mouth shut about complaining they aren't good enough. It seems we go through this every spring. At lby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Scrivens / Olympic Men's Hockey - 6 years ago
Beeeej abmarks A factor in favor of leaving right after the Olympics is that the Bruins are 3rd in the NHL in points at the moment. He'd be going to a team with ~20 games left in the regular season that has a good chance at a deep Stanley Cup run. Even if I thought he was ready to go pro at the end of this season, I have a hard time imagining him leaving now, when Harvard still has a chance -by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Scrivens / Olympic Men's Hockey - 6 years ago
RichH I'm actually really comfortable pulling for Donato Jr. (And Teddy, since now he's the poster-parent of the team in the stands.) Especially considering that if Ryan is now considered the #1 star of Team USA, there's a greater shot of him not being in Allston next season. The NBC announcing crew were joining all Cornell fans about the prospect of him turning pro...like NOW. This is much moreby BearLover - Hockey
Re: 2018 ECAC Permutations - 6 years ago
abmarks OK Bearlover, what you are really arguing then is that KRACH itself is worthless for any use, and you are making a completely specious argument based on your intuition, not any actual examination of data or the methods used in the CHN model about likelihood of winning the Conference tournament. Huh? KRACH is the best tool we have for ranking/seeding teams. It's just a poor predictive tooby BearLover - Hockey
Re: 2018 ECAC Permutations - 6 years ago
abmarks If you weren't so lazy, you might have read the FAQ page at CHN, which was answered by JTW (of this forum) himself. . Here is part of it, with key info bolded and italicised. You'll be happy to know I read that entire primer before my initial posts. It doesn't answer any of my questions or help your case in any way. abmarks There will never be enough tourney results to create a daby BearLover - Hockey

Trotsky BearLover Trotsky It is basic human psychology to look at a mathematical model that produces a counter-intuitive event probability and think "that model must be wrong." It could be wrong, of course, but the "mustness" of the feeling inverts reality. When a well-developed algorithm conflicts with your assessment of likelihood it's indicating that your brain is wrongby BearLover - Hockey

abmarks BearLover adamw imafrshmn... there's reason to believe that the CHN simulations don't really capture the low-probability outcomes as well as they should (which is to say it's all a little bit overconfident). Because KRACH ratings are assumed to be (1) constant, (2) unbiased, and (3) not-uncertain, there is no way to account for recent trends (like Clarkson tanking, for example), variatioby BearLover - Hockey

Re: Yale at Cornell 2/17 - 6 years ago
scoop85 Trotsky As we were talking about on the Chat, Yanni Kaldis had the game of his life tonight. He was everywhere. He’ll be all ECAC 1st team you would think, and certainly in the running for All-American The voters seem to stupidly only look at numbers for those honors, and at under half-a-point per game, Kaldis's numbers don't jump out. He logs a massive number of minutes per game and sby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Yale at Cornell 2/17 - 6 years ago
Jeff Hopkins '82 Not pretty, but we got the job done. I thought it was pretty. Outside of the idiotic penalties, undermanned Cornell controlled play and created chances from start to finish, and completely negated Yale's final rush--basically the opposite of last night, even though both were wins. This was one of the games that makes me confident Cornell deserves a season like the one they've haby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Yale at Cornell 2/17 - 6 years ago
abmarks Here's betting that we lose Malott for one or both games next weekend. Did the hits look that bad to you? Impossible to tell over ILDN. Also, is there any precedent for handing out a two-game suspension for someone with no history? Schafer should only bench him if the calls were right.by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Yale at Cornell 2/17 - 6 years ago
Some adversity here for Cornell with both Smith and McCrea, arguably the team's top D pair, on the shelf. Rauter shifts back to the blue line; Tschantz in at forward. pic.twitter.com/HSTb4b6H0V— Brandon Thomas (@BT_unassisted) February 17, 2018 ]Cornell has only four healthy everyday D-men tonight, plus Cairns. Re: Cornell on TV 2017-18 - 6 years ago
ILDN sucks. Tonight the cameraman missed basically the entire first goal. With no replays, that was our one shot of seeing it. The overall image is still low-definition. And as others have mentioned, there's no reason why we can't get the pregame/postgame.by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Brown at Cornell 2/16 - 6 years ago
Should be pretty clear from the last few games that any "predictor" that has us winning 95 or whatever % of games vs. RPI/St. Lawrence/Brown is not to be trusted.by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Road trips. - 6 years ago
Games being available on video has probably hurt visiting attendance the most. Though I will say the Cornell contingent sounded very loud on-air for the Yale and Havard games.by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Some History - 6 years ago
Jim Hyla BearLover upprdeck really wonder where the offense is going though. I don't think it's really gone anywhere. A few weeks ago we had the highest shooting % in the country, and many of our goals were coming on D-men shots from the outside. Now, those low-percentage shots aren't going in and we are down to 12th in the country in SH%. Our luck evening out plus our injuries is enough of an exby BearLover - Hockey

Re: Cornell @ St. Lawrence 2/10/18 - 6 years ago
Trotsky A win clinches third. Interestingly, this predictor says that if we lose out--go 0-7, including losses against RPI, StL, and Brown, all in the bottom six of the PWR--we still have a 68% of making the NCAAs. My prior criticisms of this model don't apply to this case, but that still seems difficult to believe...by BearLover - Hockey
Re: Clarkson game 2/9 - broadcast? - 6 years ago
dbilmes Interesting quote from Clarkson goalie: "Normally the games against (Cornell) I only get 10 or 15 shots. But this one they brought a level of compete and it was really fun.” Wow, "throwing shade!"by BearLover - Hockey

Re: Injuries - 6 years ago
I would play it safe given that we have nearly clinched a r1 bye and NCAA bid. I unfortunately think there is still quite a gap between our 6th D when everyone is healthy (probably Haiskanen) and Cairns. I am confident Cairns will develop into a good player but at the moment he looks pretty shaky in his positioning and in his spot passing (i.e. it seems he hasn't grasped The System especially welby BearLover - Hockey

andyw2100 CAS Will sharing the info here be sharing it with Clarkson & SLU, who probably aren’t on Schafer’s distribution list? I guess that's kind of what I am asking. On the one hand, if opposing teams really are interested in that information it is not ridiculous to think they would have someone check sites like this. It's also not ridiculous to think that if they really want the infoby BearLover - Hockey
