Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Now that our season is over... - 14 years ago
Damn, I thought we had successfully derailed this conversation. I'll try again. Kyle Rose Democracy is just one way among many (monarchy, oligarchy, etc.) to legitimize the act of one group of individuals forcing their preferences on others. "Help, help, I'm being repressed! Killer Greenberg '97So I couldn't tell you if having denser netting would have affected my view in those few plays, but I can say that you can't take any time to think about where the puck is. You have to see it and know immediately the location, speed, and direction. Wait, doesn't the Greenberg Uncertainty Principle say that you can only know 2 of these 3 properties of a puck? Greenberg '97 CowbellGuy Second, I don't think there are many situations where the goalie is looking through the net. They're usually looking around it. You'd pretty much have to get down on all fours to look through it. Except maybe Andy Isles. Great, now I have something to think about during my next game on Thursday... am I looking through the net or around it? I'll get back to you. Afterby Greenberg '97 - Hockey

Jim Hyla jtwcornell91 Jim Hyla As an aside, I wonder if RIT will be as helpful to get their students to Detroit as to Albany. Yes, they are. We got an email saying that they'll have $189 all-session tickets in the RIT section available to students for $100, and have a bus leaving at 7am Thursday, taking the US route to Detroit for the RIT game, and returning afterwards, due back in Rochester iby Greenberg '97 - Hockey

CowbellGuy I said not many situations, not any. Sure, sometimes you look through the net, but most of the time not. And it's not like a finer mesh would completely obstruct your view. I guess it comes down to how big a problem you think this is. If you're like me and Kyle, you think it's a serious problem that needs to be dealt with, and there's an easy solution to do so. Re: UNH 6 Cornell 2 postgame - 14 years ago
CowbellGuy Enough loss of visibility to matter? Other than the goal judge, whose role is largely ceremonial, is anyone really looking through the net? Hell, everyone at the ends of the rink other than those on the glass are already looking through a much finer mesh than what's in the goal itself. I couldn't say how much it would matter (I'm sure there's an equation for it somewhere), but when tby Greenberg '97 - Hockey
Re: UNH 6 Cornell 2 postgame - 14 years ago
ugarte Jim Hyla CowbellGuy I'm with Kyle on this one. Just use a smaller mesh on the nets. Problem solved. Cost negligible.I'm with Kyle about fixing the net, but not with Keith to just forget about a possible goal. To me that's still screwy. Hey, I'm with Kyle about fixing the net; almost all things could stand to be improved. I'm not with Kyle on the hair-pulling and the "unacceptable"by Greenberg '97 - Hockey
Re: UNH 6 Cornell 2 postgame - 14 years ago
Kyle Rose Fixing the net so it isn't possible for the puck to go through it is also an acceptable solution. Leaving things they way they are is not. Really? Leaving hockey exactly the way it is is not an acceptable solution? Overreact much?by Greenberg '97 - Hockey

judy They do need to learn the word sieve. Deliberately quoted out of context... I know you're just saying they should use "sieve" as opposed to "suck," but not every college hockey fan base needs to use the same word(s). My wife was sitting next to me, and about halfway through our game she commented, "Do all college fans have the same cheers?" Yeah, prettby Greenberg '97 - Hockey

Jim Hyla Greenberg '97 I didn't see this being discussed anywhere, but was anyone else impressed by the RIT student section? Excellent synchronization, if nothing else. I've never sat across from the Cornell section, so I wonder if that's how good we look from across the rink. From what I read here, I would think our synch isn't as good as it could be. They also had two cheers which I've neby Greenberg '97 - Hockey
Re: RIT fans - 14 years ago
Trotsky Yep, agreed -- they may not have had quantity but they had quality. There were RIT fans scattered around the rink as well, but yeah, they didn't fill 2.5 sections like we did. Now we all know that the Faithful are amongst the best travelling fans in college hockey, but I was suprised that UNH and RIT weren't better represented. All three schools are about the same distance from Albaby Greenberg '97 - Hockey

Robb Or, if you think like an engineer, the net killed the puck's north-south velocity, so only the component of velocity in the east-west direction remained. North-south velocity wasn't the only thing killed with that shot.by Greenberg '97 - Hockey
Re: Regionals Sunday March 28 - 14 years ago
I don't even consider it a "blown call." In the situation, the ref has to blow his whistle if he either loses sight of the puck or feels the goalie gained possession (not covered or deflected the puck, but directed or possessed the puck). Maybe the whistle was for the latter. The last thing a ref wants in that situation is a goal being scored after possession changed. I think a quby Greenberg '97 - Hockey

I'd like to add that all the UK fans that I spoke to after the game were pretty classy. Message board posts aside, I think there was a lot of mutual respect in the Dome. But how do you not respect fans that, given almost impossible odds, fill 70% or more of the seats?by Greenberg '97 - Other Sports

sockralex On TV it looked like Cornell support for basketball was fantastic. Let's match that and then some. It really was impressive. Unfortunately the UK and WVU sections were behind the court from the usual camera angle, but we owned the rest of the bowl.
