couldn't!  You couldn't care less!
Bah. I put this one in the same category as "fat chance".
Do you mean that in the same way that "fat" is sarcastic, "could" is said in an ironic or sarcastic way?  I've never heard someone say "I could care less" in that way.  I think the "n't" just fell off somewhere along the line and people repeat the expression without being aware, or caring, that they're actually contradicting themselves.
I don't disagree - but then I also don't think that most people who say "fat chance" realize that they are riffing on "slim chance" when they say it. I think the phrases are used in the same way - which is to say that the current phrase has the irony embedded in it even if the speaker isn't being consciously ironic.

Getting one's scarf twisted in knots over what I think is at least semi-intentional (and ubiquitous) colloquial usage is a sure path to madness.

I have lots of pet peeves that may drive me mad.  Fortunately I also have lots of quirks that may drive those around me mad first.

I think you are talking simantics here.  Fat chance, slim Chance, no difference at all...

I still haven't found what I am looking for.

Who is this Rich S guy?  why is he always on our board croaking about Clarkson?  We all know the Clarkson gang is so jealous of our fine learning establishment.

Go back to the juniors Rich S.

You too can be a member of the One Campaign.

Geez, man, if you're such a freakin' U2 fan, at least learn how to spell "Larry Mullen, Jr." correctly.

Bono will get mono from Alyssa Milano.
The Edge will trim a hedge with Sister Sledge.
Adam Clayton will worship Satan in Dayton.
And nothing rhymes with Larry Mullen Jr.

Zach Schwann was a Right Winger...not a democrate!  For what its worth...I grew up in the Ithaca area and my dad always took me to the Big Red games.  I vividly remember Dryden in net and the French Connection on the lacrosse field.  I first heard about Clarkson that way.  I ended up sorting out my engineering college choices with Clarkson first followed by Cornell and then U of R.  I was very happy with the Clarkson education and it has served me very well over the years landing me as an executive with CSC after stints at IBM (8yrs), Lockheed (5yrs) and 6 yrs going the small business route.  I'm sure a Cornell education would have served me equally as well...or better.  Who knows?  I am perplexed how much ice time you all give Clarkson on a Cornell hockey forum.  Obviously, there is respect both ways otherwise you just wouldn't care enough to comment.  My parents still live in the Ithaca area and I annually make a 6 hr journey to take my dad to the CU-CCT game at Lynah.  This coming year my older son will join us too.  The tradition continues...which is the best thing about college sports and a good rivalry like this one makes it all the better.

This comment is better than your insensitive ethnic crack.:-(
His butt's a different color than the rest of him? How'd you find out? Wait, let's not go there.

In time you'll retract the second half of the second sentence (what gets comment around here is less a function of level of respect than poster boredom -- whether that's a useful expenditure of keystrokes is another question), but the essence of your comment is right on: Clarkson is one of the most respected of Cornell's rivals precisely because they have been so strong an opponent, and the chain-yanking directed towards the team, the school, and the vast majority of Clarkson posters is good-natured and tongue-firmly-in-cheek.

You'd really have to go out of your way in noxious, tedious, endlessly-repeated borishness to gain literally-meant disrespect and derision.  To date, pretty much just one person has.

... and we feel sorry Clarkson doesn't have a more robust forum so their fans would have a halfway house to call their own. Rich S must love hockey to the extreme to take the abuse on eLynah.

Unless he's a masochist and gets off on it.

(Q: What's the difference between a masochist and a sadist?
(A: A masochist says, "Whip me." A sadist says, "I won't.")

Greg,

I agree.  You've done your obnoxious-etc best to earn disrespect.
