speaking of anthems and drinking songs... i caught the tail end of Mizzou-Vandy basketball (i miss you, AK Okereke) and Mizzou's band was playing a song suspiciously similar to Far Above Cayuga's Waters.

Went to a University of Kansas bar to watch them play Kentucky in the basketball finals about 10 or 15 years ago. Bar broke out in their Alma mater at one point. Same tune.
As for the hockey, three beautiful goals in a three-goal game. Felt like USA had the run of play (despite surprising shot totals for most of the game) and depth won out. As good as the Keller move/goal was, the stretch pass to spring her was some Magic Johnson no-look brilliance.

This.  Extremely popular and much-stolen tune.  Crops up everywhere in the late 19th century.  We are just one of many thieves.

This looks inevitable.  I guess the Slovaks will just have to go through Canada.  :D

Somebody explain to me why I care so much less about the Men's tournament with the NHL players involved. I'm just so "meh" about it.

Because it doesn't compare to the Stanley Cup as a showcase for the sport and the athletes act like they're doing us a favor by putting on the Olympic jerseys. If it's not a pinnacle it's an exhibition.

i think that's more cynical than i can manage. the level of play has been so high. the canada-finland game was amazing.

Also this. There's an actual plot conceit that the character singing, the owner's grandson, is a Hotelie, which explains his use of the tune. But the screenwriter was a Penn alum, not Cornell.

Totally, totally, totally agree. I can't believe that anyone watching these games would ever think that the players don't care.

To go back in time, and you're old enough to have seen this. But in case you never saw it or forgot here's Crosby 2010. And because it's so significant all you need to do is put in Crosby 2010 and up it pops.

Sure the Stanley Cup is the pinnacle of best team play. Single games can never come close to that, except...

the Olympics.

As a showcase nothing is better. That's why it's the last event and right before closing ceremonies. Do a quick search of most watched games here and in Canada. I think this beats Stanley cup for general viewership.

For the fans, I suspect that if you'd ask any Canadian about Crosby, the fist thing that would come up is 2010.

For Americans, 1980. Yes it was different having a bunch of "kids" beat the Russians and the world, but major significance.

No, these guys are not just going through the motions.

Now get in front of a screen tomorrow AM, I feel bad for those on the west coast, 5AM is early, but I think it's worth it and no better way to start a Sunday morning!

I was skeptical going into the four nations last year. But that left me no doubt about the pride these guys take in a best on best international tournament.

I still wish the Olympics was played with amateur players- just my humble opinion
