Gold medal game

14 minutes into the 1st period, 0-0. Few shots on goal yet for either side although Canada has had a PP opportunity. Canada has noticeably been taking shorter shifts and trying to build the momentum on the forecheck. Clearly getting the first goal is a big priority.

0-0 After 1, with USA on the PP to start the 2nd. Canada with a 8-6 advantage in SOG, although neither team has had a particularly good chance yet. Tactically it has been well contested thus far, with both teams able to play to their styles to some extent. This is much better from the Canadians, and a tightly contested game plays much more to their confidence.

Kristin O'Neill with an incredible short handed goal to put Canada up 1-0 at 0:54 in the second period. Kristin O'Neill from Laura Stacey and Renata Fast, 2nd Period.

Weder

She's always so fun to watch on the PK. Her freshman season was ridiculous.

O'Neill having a great game.

Both teams are such strong skaters and great players.  Significant gap between them and the rest of the field.

Per CBC, that was the first Canada shorty in a gold medal Olympic game.

Still 1-0 Canada after 2 periods. USA had much more attacking time throughout the second, with a few pretty high grade chances, but Ann-Renee Desbiens has had all the answers she's needed. USA is getting aggressive in the offensive zone now and opening up the neutral zone for Canada to find odd numbers in transition. Jenner is having her most effective game of the tournament as well. Exciting stuff.

CBC goes into the second intermission with a long highlight reel on Kristin, calling her "the hero of this Olympics for Canada."  Now she's doing an interview outside the room.  She's so awesome.

Also, her mom is going absolutely nuts in the stands.

Quote from: chimpfood on February 18, 2026, 05:46:03 PMCrazy slate today with 3 of 4 quarterfinals going to OT. US pulls it out and gets Slovakia, who is doing well but should certainly be beatable.

194 of 195 nations will join me in rooting for Slovakia, as well as every American with musical taste.

My mom's maternal family came from what is now Slovakia (although we're not Slovak), but I'm still rooting for the USA.

OTOH, just about any National Anthem is better than our pilfered drinking song.

Nope, not Hungarian or Ukrainian either (although my mom's father - from Transylvania - spoke Hungarian).

We endured Kraut carpetbaggers to go with the Hun Harkonnen.  That you?  Or Wandering Dacians?  (I'm not sure "Romanian" is really a thing other than a language group.)

Hillary Knight deflects a low shot from Laila Edwards at 17:56 in the 3rd with the extra attacker to tie 1-1.
