Casey and I are on the same page

Quote from: Trotsky on November 04, 2026, 01:21:00 PMSection O has the visiting allotment, which is typically returned with lots of unsold seats.  Those seats must show as unavailable during the run up.

I would never put it past Cornell to do the same sleazeball lying every other commercial entity in world history has to steal your money, but in this instance there's also another explanation.

Section O hasnt been the visitor section in many years.

They sold over 3000 tickets last week for both games. .the townies I suspect went to 1 game not both  and some stayed home because of halloween.

Quote from: andyw2100 on November 04, 2026, 03:29:50 PMAt the risk of drawing Casey's ire, as Stereax did last season, here's an excerpt from Casey's email to hockey supporters. (Again, I'm guessing this is the kind of message he would not mind getting broader exposure, or I wouldn't be sharing it.)

I would be remiss if I didn't mention something else from the weekend. The crowds at Lynah rink were incredibly disappointing. In all my years in that building, I honestly cannot remember seeing opening-weekend crowds like that. I don't even think we have seen crowds that small during intersession. Our players feed off the energy in Lynah, and there is nothing quite like playing in front of a packed building with the Lynah Faithful behind us. The atmosphere you create genuinely matters. It gives our student-athletes an extra boost, builds momentum, and helps make Lynah one of the most special venues in college hockey. Let's fill the building, bring the energy, and remind everyone why there is no place quite like Lynah on game night.

Thanks for reminding me about that one 🫣 I still worry that they're going to figure out it was me and corner me after a game and kick my ass 😂

But, I mean... I'm trying to figure out what the hell the dropoff was from just last year - where we'd routinely mostly fill Lynah. There'd be some empty seats, but looking at some of the photos from last weekend... yeesh. And if it's true that sections like the E-J bend have more open seats than full ones for this weekend, too...

Will also note that it seems they've expanded alcohol options and are making them available every game, as opposed to "just for Harvard weekend".

As has been noted earlier in this thread, declining attendance is not limited to Cornell. Last Saturday, Q hosted Providence in a 12 noon game. This was a matchup of ranked teams, both of whom won their regular season championships last year. The game was going to be over in plenty of time for Halloween festivities. Yet Q was sending out weekly emails promoting discounted tickets. I ended up getting one of those cheap tickets, and the arena was at best 70 percent full. The only sections that were filled in were the Q student sections.
There was also a sparse crowd at the Yale season opener last Friday, although that's to be expected considering how bad Yale has been recently.

This may be a small contributing factor to the decline in attendance at Lynah, but having homework due at midnight on Fridays certainly doesn't help. In theory, students could get their work done ahead of time, but that's not always realistic. My daughter didn't make it to tonight's game because she had a problem set due at midnight.

College kids are bad with deadlines, but ive never seen a college kid pass up a Friday night event due to a deadline.  They do it ahead of time or half-ass it.

Separately, made the 5 hour trip for the Halloween game and was really disappointed to see it so empty.  Glad to see it looked a good deal better this weekend, still saw more empty seats than usual (at least it seemed that way on streaming).

Today it was almost full. Some space in the bend, but everything else was full or nearly so.

The Rancor

Looked much more full on the ESPN+ stream.

Quote from: BearLover on November 03, 2026, 03:17:09 PMIt's certainly fair to point out that this trend is happening everywhere. Within men's college hockey, I've seen fans of several other teams complaining about it. The thing is, those other teams never had great atmospheres to begin with. So while Clarkson may be only getting 1,000 fans instead of 1,500, or Harvard may be getting 800 instead of 1,200, they're not losing as much as when Lynah goes from electric to half-empty.

I guess you haven't been around long enough to know how great the atmosphere at Clarkson used to be.
