For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure turning off new account making is intended as a stopgap.

This makes sense to me. I don't think there are a great number of new Cornell hockey fans wishing to discuss hockey stuff over the summer months. The risk of turning away new fans right now is pretty low, compared to the obvious benefit of stemming the tide of new foreign spambot accounts posting in the forum.

That said, I remain hopeful that we'll have a better solution in place before the start of the new season in the fall.

mostly it's not posting the same thing for the 400th timie so that a new post notification from a real person is something more than a guy complaining about all the fake posts.

Seems like a weak solution. Any other ideas?

Ever since The Rancor said this forum needs to improve its signal-to-noise ratio I've been trying to post more. But the NCAA's new five-year eligibility rule is having a counteracting effect and makes engaging with Cornell sports very discouraging.

The NCAA can grant another five years of eligibility. Unfortunately, there's still no limit for your posting career.
