Quote from: pjd8 on March 06, 2026, 10:16:07 PMWith Harvard winning, assuming Union beats Brown and Colgate beats Yale, we get Harvard.

I'd much rather play Harvard than Colgate. Maybe it's just as well that Dartmouth won the seeding tiebreaker.

If Union wins, Harvard goes to Lynah regardless of the result of the other game, which happens to start two hours later than the proceedings in Schenectady. We'll know earlier who will be in Ithaca.

But if Yale beats Colgate, then we wouldn't have to worry about Colgate anyway. Nor would anyone else.

Let's hope Yale does everyone a public service tomorrow.

I am terrified for playoff Cornell/Harvard, if it happens.

I'd be more afraid of SLU. The Saints will get a Cinderella moral boost if they win. Harvard is playing so uninspired that I think we've got a much better chance of beating them in Lynah.

There was no possibility of us playing SLU next round (or really any round).

We are definitely more likely to lose to Harvard than any other possible opponent but at least we probably can't drop out of the NCAA tournament if we get swept by them.

Really? I like our chances against Harvard better than our chances against Colgate. I sent the following to my daughters earlier, explaining my rationale.

"I think I'd prefer Harvard. 1) We beat Harvard twice this year. Colgate games were tougher. 2) We beat Colgate in their barn in this round last year. They will want revenge. 3) Colgate beat us at Lynah in this round a few years ago. 4) Colgate would bring more fans. 5) Harvard Sucks!"

I just think Harvard is a better team than Colgate so therefore they would be harder to beat. I wouldn't read too much into a small sample (Colgate we beat and tied* whereas Harvard we beat twice). The other stuff you said is fun talking points for fans but doesn't have much bearing on how we match up with those teams this season. It's safe to assume whomever we face will be motivated and trying their absolute hardest.

*losing in 3x3 OT is closer to a tie than a loss and doesn't have much bearing on the postseason, which is all 5x5

Going into the postseason I'd have ranked possible opponents in the following order of difficulty:
Quinnipiac
Dartmouth
Union
Harvard/Clarkson/Princeton
Colgate/St. Lawrence/RPI
Yale
Brown

I can certainly see your points.

One more point for me preferring Harvard would be that that also means tougher opponents for Quinnipiac and Dartmouth. I'd love for us to make it to Placid and for one or both of Quinnipiac and Dartmouth not to.

End of night NPI is at 9 again, UMD hops over us. Denver jumps up to 5. Notably, NoDak is now #1, in part bc Mich State choked up a shootout loss to Minnesota. So pure chalk rn would have NoDak, us, Minn-Duluth, AHA autobid, almost certainly in Sioux Falls (while NoDak isn't hosting it, I see no world where they don't give them that regional). Everything subject to change tomorrow and in tournament games.

Harvard is the better team, but.....

Harvard was really lackluster last night With few fans, no band and no real spark to the team until they tied it up in the third, it felt like watching a practice rather than a playoff game. It's why they went to OT with SLU (even though the Saints have improved a lot this season, they are not great.). A long road trip to Ithaca will not help the Crimson.

Whereas Colgate has the satisfaction of having gotten under our skin this year and using that to win. They won't have forgotten that lesson. Harder will definitely have them riled up, and we are still a young team that can fall victim to that.

Over the years, our ace in the hole for playoffs has been passion. It's why we are a great underdog in the tournament. I would rather take my chances at channeling that passion against Harvard, than having to keep it under wraps against a Colgate team that has proven they can goad us into mistakes.

I don't quite understand what you are saying. Particularly the line "it's why we are a great underdog in the tournament."

I think if the roles were reversed we could just as easily say Harvard will be more motivated because we beat them twice or because they want to stick it to our fans or because they just came off a thrilling OT win. It's always easy to find (arbitrary) reasons  why Team A will be more motivated or have more mojo than Team B.

It's the playoffs. Everyone will be maximally motivated. That factor is a wash.

Hockey games are decided not by the fans or the bus ride or a desire for vengeance. They're decided by matchups and which team is better.

Harvard has much better players than Colgate and was an altogether better team this season. Both teams play a north-south run-and-gun style that tries to beat you in transition, but Harvard's players are faster and more skilled. My conclusion: Harvard is a tougher matchup.

It doesn't really matter at this point. Selfishly, I'd like to see us play Colgate instead because one Harvard Game per year is enough.

2-0 Union in the 2nd and it probably would be a bigger difference if not for a few desperation saves from the Brown goaltender

Brown needs a complete rebuild. Union is good and will be a tough out for Princeton, assuming Colgate beats Yale.

They'd be well attended if we played Colgate too. This seems like a "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" situation. Celebrating that we will be paired against the higher ranked and higher seeded team...you had better hope Cornell wins...

Union wins 9-0, scoring 5 goals and outshooting Brown 26-2 in the third period even though they were already up 4-0 heading into it. That suggests to me they were running up the score. Not a good look, very Rand Pecknold-like. I feel bad for the Brown players and coaches.
