I posted this in the Nieuwendyk thread but upon second thought...I figured that more people who would be interested would see it here...

Yeah...this year made me delve into my drawer to find my "I drank from the Cup at Dunbar's" t-shirt that I got back in 99...signed by Joe too...mmmm... E-bay anyone? :-D (or NOT!)

It was such a weird week too...because earlier in the week a couple of my friends were hanging out at a very empty Dunbars and there was some short guy standing in the back corner waiting for the bathroom. The short guy was none other than Mike Richter just hanging out in Dunbars for the night. Needless to say...my friend who is an Islander fan gave him the business..he took it with good humor too. :-)

And actually...you should confirm this...but another friend of mine ran into the Devils by complete accident at a bar in West Orange, NJ the night after they won the Cup. He spoke to Joe and asked him about bringing the Cup up to Ithaca again...and Joe did indeed tell him that he was planning on going up on July 11th.

Hope this helps..

you mean mick richter, the new york ranger's goalie? he lives in ithaca?

CowbellGuy

He means Mike Richter, the New York Rangers goalie, who is a friend of Joe's and spends a lot of time (and got married) up here.

Richter had been working on a graduate degree during the summers, until he started dating his now-wife, who I believe was at Columbia at the time, so he transferred there.  But once I saw him playing a pickup game at Lynah, with Joe and Casey Jones, among others.

So here's a question, if he brings it to Ithaca, will it be available at more than just Dunbar's? Bc I know a Devs fan who might like to come up for the weekend, but is just a few months short of 21... or might Dunbar's do a special over/under night for Cup Watchers? :-) (not likely) Any more info on what happened last time?

Last time Joe and the Cup attended an evening celebration at Moakley House, IIRC.  Don't recall whether it was open to all or by invitation.

My recollection is that the Moakley House celebration was by invitation, but word got around quickly and a lot of other folk were there.  No one was hassled.  The cup visited Dunbars and the Glenwood Pines last time in town.  I don't know where else.

Mike Richter used to rent a house on the lake for the summer right near Joe's house.  Don't know if he is here for the summer this year, or if it's just a quick visit.

There's a great picture of Joe and Mike with a bunch of kids hanging at The Rink in Lansing.  A few summers ago the two of them took some ice time to work out (Lynah didn't have ice in or available at that time) and were just great about greeting the kids (and adults) who happened to be around.

These two are not just star athletes, they're terrific people.

REDhead

The alumni golf tournament is on July 12 this year, it is a benefit for Mike Tallman, been kinda hoping Joe would come & bring the Cup (missed it last time around) so happy to hear this latest rumor/news!

I don't know what it's like now but when I was in school all you needed to get into Dunbars was a pulse.

Dunbars was. as always, open to everyone.  The only supposed "invitations only" celebration was the one at Moakley.

Peter,

I believe Bill was referring to the 21 year old drinking age and the fact that Dunbars has been less picky than certain legal authorities would desire. Well, I'll say that I heard it from a little birdie (totally unreliable, I'm talking off the wall here ;-) ) that Dunbars got in trouble when some under 21 players hung out there earlier this season, so they've been much more serious lately.

If Bill *was* just talking about invitation, then please forget what I said... this message will self-destruct... :-D.

As opposed to the Chapter House, which is still carding me well into my 30s.

When I was in Ithaca in February, they almost didn't let me into Dunbar's because all I had was my CA drivers' license.  I was asked for my area code when they then looked up in a book before letting me in.  I was so tempted to  inform them that they let me in all the time when I was 19....

nyc94

Yes, I was referring to the drinking age.  The running joke we had was that you could get in with a note from your mother, as in

Mr. Kotter,
Please let Juan into Dunbars as he is now 21 years old.
signed,
Epstein's mother

Anyway, you know something odd is afoot when, as far as I know, Dunbars never once got cited for underage drinking in my undergrad years.  Contrast that with the now defunct Clubhouse which got raided almost every weekend.
