Don't hold your breath.  As college hockey fans, we'd be lucky if Seth Jones take a single ncaa hockey shift.

To follow up, the Portland Winterhawks (WHL) will announce its signing of Jones at 5 pm EDT today. I expect he'll play only one year in the WHL.  He's very close to being NHL-ready now.

I'm pretty sure this is my fault.  :)

Apparently if he had narrowed his choices down to WHL and North Dakota so Cornell wasn't in the cards anyway. At the very least he used the offer of a NoDak scholarship to leverage a trade of his rights to the WHL team he preferred.

The Cornell connection here is that Reece Willcox, BCHL defenseman currently committed to Cornell, was one of the players traded from Portland to Everett in return for Jones.

QuoteWillcox is considered a top prospect. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound native of Surrey, B.C., was a third-round bantam pick in 2009 and was ranked 90th among North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Service for this year's NHL draft. This season he played for Merritt of the junior A British Columbia Hockey League, registering five goals and 18 assists in 52 games. However, he is currently committed to attend Cornell University.

"He's someone we still have to try and recruit," Davidson said. "But he moves the puck very well and is very smart. He's not a guy who's flashy, but he's a really solid player."

I sure hope we can hold onto Wilcox.  A couple years ago we lost Mark Scheifele, who turned out to be a top-10 NHL pick.

Aaron M. Griffin

Two current players, Bardreau and Ryan, were named to the United States National Junior Evaluation Camp roster.

Also, Big Red Puckhead is reporting that Cornell has received a commitment from Woody Hudson for the 2013-14 season. I found this somewhat interesting:

Quote from: BRPHe had originally committed to RIT last August but had a change of heart during the winter.

So, in a matter of two months, Cornell has benefited from players decommitting from Michigan State and RIT.

A Rochester area guy. Nice.  A quick google search shows a USHL fight video as one of the first hits, and a little more digging turns up this list:

A lot of size, and he likes to mix it up.  A physical player for sure with 121 PIM in 52 games. If he has any puck skills (29 points suggests he does), it's easy to see why Schafer would want him.

AFAIK, Hudson will be the first black player in Cornell hockey history.

Is Rochester a hotbed for hockey?

Not exactly.

Damian Rocke, who holds the Cornell record for PIM-to-TOI ratio, was the last black player to suit up for the Big Red.  He was a soccer player who, along with Ryan Kirwan, spent the 1996-97 season on the varsity hockey team.

There have been black players on the JV team.  An eLynah thread from a couple years ago mentioned someone who played a little for the varsity team in the early or mid 80s (edit: the unofficial hockey program historian idenifies him as Warren Fields, who played one game in 1983-84). In 1993, I was in a seminar with Steve Christian, who was from Shaker Heights, OH.

I do believe that if he plays regularly, Woody Hudson would be the first black Cornell men's hockey player to be a mainstay in the lineup.
