[quote krose]Since I know dick about basketball, I apologize in advance for any verbal faux pas in the following statement.

Cornell seems to be getting plenty of open shots, and missing all of them.  It's not like Stanford's defense is doing a particularly good job to my eyes.

I'm no expert either but that's a fair assessment.  If we could hit some shots we could take away their "fast" break.

Foote with three fouls, 2 pts

5/31 shooting for Cornell

Stanford on a 23-5 run to close the half.  Sheesh!

I think the jump shots are less open than you think. Cornell's guys are having trouble making clean passes around the perimiter, they are not able to set their feet, and are taking a lot of catch-and-shoot fadeaways, which isn't what they are used to settling for against, say, Columbia. Dale is driving recklessly so he can't hit a goddamn layup OR draw a foul, because they are letting that off-the-rails locomotive through.

Also, we can't defend these guys for shit.

Well, thoroughly embarrassing show so far.  Let's go Red! ::doh:: ::nut::

We've been forcing a lot of shots, but, even when the shots are pretty good, we're throwing up bricks.  To play a more athletic, talented team, you've got to have a patterned offense of some kind, a la the Pete Carril-coached Princeton teams that would work a weave and spring someone for an open three or a back-door cut.  We just don't have that kind of offense, and when the other guys play pressure D and are bigger, we have no real answer.  And when we shoot sub-20% on top of that...

Cornell is facing much more pressure than they are used to.  Unfortunately, they are not handling it well at all.  Many of their shots are very rushed as a couple of other people have mentioned.  They have had a few good looks, but they are playing so tightly that they are throwing up bricks even when they have had good chances.

The second half isn't any better. I feel like I'm watching a preview of the women's game against UConn, but with more dunking.

50-21, 15:16 left in Bloody Thursday. Let's keep it within 40, guys.

The quickness and athleticism that top programs have is too much for Cornell. Part of the problem is it leads to poor technique, rushed decisions, and a worn down team.

Cornell shot 49% from the field on the season. Against Syracuse (36%) and Duke (46%) those numbers drop. That pattern is more pronounced from the line: 76% on the season, but 50% against Syracuse and 64% against Duke.

Keep it under 20 and I'll be happy.

So far, it's worse than the 1st half.  I was thinking it looks like a lot of high school girls games in which one team can score at will and the other can even get to the basket.

At 58-26 with 13:50 to go, Stanford's lead is 98% safe (and in the course of typing this, it has gone to 100%).

I'd have called this one at 4-0; we couldn't handle Lopez at all.

Al DeFlorio

Once the guys with size and talent get a big lead, they just fire away with abandon.

Deja vu 1988.
