Re: Cornell @ Boston University, Jan. 14, 2023 - GAME TIME IS 4PM - 1 year ago
abmarks arugula Pwr insanity: women lose 6-1 at home to Q and do not drop even one spot. Men lose like that, on the road, and drops four spots. Ok sure. It's.not that we lost one game. It's the results of ALL games played yesterday. I don't think any of the pwr calculators let you customize the calculations to pretend that a given game had not yet been played; that's be the only way to knoby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Trotsky Continue to stare at it. I think it actually makes sense. You just need to let it grow in your head, like a tumor. Okay, now I get it. It would be a little easier to follow if you defined the formulas for your six quantities, which are, in matrix form, / W \ / 1 1 0 0 0 0 \ / RW\ | L | | 0 0 0 0 1 1 | |OTW| | T | | 0 0 1 1 0 0 | |SOW| |DW | = | 1 0 0 0 0 0 | |SOL| |DL |by jtwcornell91 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Advice - 1 year ago
Trotsky I have been agonizing (well...) about how to deal with the ECAC going to the Derp Point System for games. I think I have found a way to record results in the manner that is most informative and least destructive of continuity with prior results, but y'all are smarter and maybe have a better way. TBRW had over 4000 legacy records of team seasons before the rot set in. I would like toby jtwcornell91 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Polls - 1 year ago
Trotsky osorojo What criteria are used to construct college hockey rankings, and which ranking system has most successfully predicted the winners of contests between ranked teams? Google PWR, RPICH, KRACH, and PEBCAK. There's some (slightly old, like pre-weird-OT-and-shootout-system) discussion at Is PEBCAK a new rating system, or did you just tell him to google GOATSE?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Outdoor Hockey - 1 year ago
The Rancor I was wondering when the last Cornell outdoor game was- and if there would be interest in a Schoellkopf Field game? Anyone want to lay odds our last outdoor game was on Beebe Lake?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Overrated schools - 1 year ago
billhowardThe main criteria for being "borderline worthless" apparently was high tuition, low average starting salary (the first school cited was a college of art), or lengthy period for the average graduating salary to add up to more than the four-year cost to attend. The fact that the "worth" of an education is measured in terms of salary is much of what's wrong with our sby jtwcornell91 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Harvard @ Cornell, 12/2/2022 - 1 year ago
Dafatone Give My Regards Correct on ECAC standings. In pairwise, an OT win counts as 0.67 of a win and an OT loss is 0.33, changed from last year's 0.55 and 0.45 . So we went from OT barely mattering while playing functional hockey overtime to OT mattering some while playing sideshow hockey. Sounds about right. But the OT was already 3x3 last year, right? TimV jtwcornell91 Did they remove the plastic butt-huggers? Students stand the whole game. Don' need no steenkin butt-huggers. Yes, but since they typically stand *on* the benches, the plastic butt-huggers (foot-huggers?) would make that more difficult.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: ECAC Playoff Changes - 1 year ago
David Harding upprdeck Its simple math for sure.. Its a couple more possible days in a hotel and food for 30+ people x4. Travel cost is the same. You also have to look at the revenue generated since the league gets the playoff money more than the local school does. just spitball some random numbers, 2K of tickets at say $25 is $5k of income. 30 people is $100 a night for 15 rooms is $1500,by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Re: Cornell's new baseball stadium - "Booth Field" - 1 year ago
billhoward Sorry, "turf"? Pre-millennial, that meant grass. Now, if you're younger, I believe turf means "articial turf." Sort of a retronym thing. As a Gen-Xer, when I hear "turf" I think artificial turf (or perhaps even Astroturf). Grass is grass (or "natural grass". But then I'm young enough that the other use of "grass" had fallen out of usby jtwcornell91 - Other Sports

billhoward 2b. Love how in a few short years the NFL has gone from "there is no gambling" to the announcers talking about betting lines. I grew up watching Jimmy the Greek on CBS's pre-game show, so I'm pretty sure sportscasters have always acknowledged gambling in the NFL.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Cornell football 2022 at midpoint - 1 year ago
Scersk '97 Trotsky billhowardHas there ever been a four-way title tie? Nope. 3-way ties in: 66 (6-1: Drt, Hvd, Prn) 69 (6-1: Drt, Prn, Yal) 82 (5-2: Drt, Hvd, Pen) 15 (6-1: Drt, Hvd, Pen) Princeton "prevented" a four-way in 1995 by kicking a last-second, 18-yard field goal to tie Dartmouth and "win" the title outright. RichH Rita It is sad that at your college hockey rink that they have to be so strict. I get it at things like super bowls - but for the fish and fowl game? The obvious result of the "Could it happen HERE?!??" culture that local newscasts exist to promote is an excuse to implement extreme security theater measures even for a small-town college hockey barn. Re: Athletic correctness - 1 year ago
nshapiro Jeff Hopkins '82 Trotsky Great movie. The whole concept ruined baseball, but it was a great movie. What ruined baseball was the realization by (I think it was) Marlon Byrd that a singles hitter with a .300 avg is worth less than a .240 hitting slugger. He changed his swing angle, started hitting homers, and got bigger contracts. He became the role model for the modern baseball playby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Athletic correctness - 1 year ago
Dafatone Beeeej It's a cute anecdote, but I sure hope you're not suggesting that Cornell's more recent relative lack of national success is largely or even partly due to Schafer's unwillingness to tell Don Vaughan and his peers to go **** themselves. We also don't know how many coaches Schafer is or isn't telling to go **** themselves. Although I wouldn't expect Vaughan to make that list.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

mountainred Soccer team opens the season with a 2-1 win at Cal Santa Barbara. That looks to be a quality win, the Gauchos (love that nickname) received votes in the last top 25 vote, enough to be an informal 28th. Cornell had more shots and SOG. Trotsky wolcoma I have no problem with Cornell hiring a female AD as long as she is experienced and good at the job. Where the Board of Trustees screwed up is after Elizabeth Garrett passed away they were in too much of a hurry to hire another female president rather than the best person for the job. Last night we watched an episode ("Spock Amok" of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which apparently aired earlier in the summer. Re: blackwidow - 1 year ago
French Rage blackwidow Robb Only 14 teams, 2 ECAC, and 1 Ivy have done it in the last 25 years, so it’s a ridiculous assertion to say that any particular team should have pulled it off “by chance.” I do have to acknowledge the stats you quoted show winning the NCAA title in the last 25 years should not have been claimed to be a walk in the park for the majority of the teams in the ECAC. BearLover French Rage BearLover Last years fans were screaming for 2.5 hours and dying of thirst—not even water was permitted. What was the total number of fatalities? Dafatone Most hated for me is Dartmouth in a landslide, but I don't know that I'd call them a top three rival. There's definitely a different between hatred and rivalry. I can't stand Quinnipiac, but they don't deserve to be anyone's rival. As a traditionalist, I'd say Cornell's biggest rivals would/should be 1. Harvard 2. BU 3.
