Re: 2023 NCAA Tournament: Regionals - 1 year ago
Trotsky I learned the horrible truth when I was listening to Harvard play the 1989 final against Minnesota right in the heart of their long winning streak against us, and I realize to my horror I was balls out rooting for Harvard out of ECAC solidarity. The only school I even remotely waiver on is Q because they're conference frauds, but I still pragmatically want to see ECAC teams advance, atby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

shafer BearLover underskill Given the way the PP looked I’d rather take the penalty and try to end the game at 3-0 Definitely take the penalty shot there. DeSantis is one of the most skilled players on the team. It wasn’t unreasonable to go for it given DeSantis’s skills in that spot. I just thought that Chrona would be tough to beat and it was getting to be time to use the clock to our advantaby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Swampy abmarks Swampy Some things I'd want to add to the discussion: 2. Exactly how does variance play out in these methods. If Team A plays Team B, does the P = 1.0? Suppose Team A has P = 0.6, and Team B has 0.4, but Team A is erratic (I'm looking at you Clarkson), while Team B is not. Does A's greater variance show up in the prediction? Let's say we know that in the long run, A beatsby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Dafatone andyw2100 djk26 Ugh--so this weekend is the double torture of losing to Harvard--and then having to root for them in the next game. Root for them to tie us in number of ECAC titles? Sorry-can't do it. I'll be there rooting for Colgate and hoping that BU or Saint Cloud get it done. BU starts a half hour earlier. Hopefully they can put up a half dozen in the first and make rooting aby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

HeafDog (Starts nice and slow, and gathers speed starting after the first time through) Oh when the Red Come skating in Oh when the Red come skating in Oh I want to be there in Lynah When the Red come skating in I suspect this has something to do with the reduction in road trips, but this would feel wrong to anyone who'd been to a game at St. Lawrence/with an SLU band present. margolism Gee, when I said tickets go on sale Monday it was meant to be a joke. The online ticketing is still not functioning even though they said tickets would go on sale at 7am. Another piece of evidence: Going into the last day of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga season yesterday, Frankfurt was two points ahead of Berlin for the last playoff spot. The two were playing simultaneously versus different opponents, and when both games went into overtime, Frankfurt clinched the playoffs, since they were guaranteed one point and Berlin could get no more than two. Re: Yet another collegetown bar bites the dust - 1 year ago
When I was in college, I moved in circles without a lot of drinking, so bars weren't a big part of the scene, but there was a lot of late-night socializing over Hot Truck, which is also no more. And the gaming culture was mostly table-top, in person, then.by jtwcornell91 - John Spencer Is Dead

I seem to recall that application fee was also a deterrent to applying to more schools than one really wanted to attend. And also the practicalities of visiting all of them, but I guess kids can skip that if they're only applying for sport.by jtwcornell91 - John Spencer Is Dead

chimpfood I think it’s time for the pairwise to give more than a 20 percent bonus for away games. If you look around the ncaa this year there are some tremendous differences in home vs away record. Just in the ECAC harvard and Q are undefeated at home, we have one loss at home and are below .500 away. Even Yale is hovering around .500 at home. I don't think anyone is computing KASA any more, buby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: IT'S A TRAP! Cornell vs Princeton - 1 year ago
Trotsky BearLover Trotsky Let's appreciate what we have. Cornell's record after 12 ECAC games, last 5 seasons: 18 10-1-1 19 8-3-1 20 9-1-2 22 8-2-2 23 9-3-0 I think we need to differentiate between regulation wins vs. 3x3 OT wins, and between regulation losses vs. 3x3 OT losses. Otherwise these are apples-to-oranges comparisons. No. Apples and oranges would be lumping shootout wiby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Trotsky osorojo If current rating systems are no better at predicting outcomes of upcoming hockey games than my Aunt Beulah is why not dig a hole, cover it with leaves and grass, and TRAP someone to predict outcomes of upcoming college hockey games? Re: Cornell @ Boston University, Jan. 14, 2023 - GAME TIME IS 4PM - 1 year ago
arugula Yes I get what the theory is but it doesn’t make sense. That kind of loss on the road should not hurt that much. I thought quality losses were often better than weak wins. You do understand that PWR is not a poll, right? It doesn't matter how close the game was, just who won (and these days, whether it was in regulation, OT, or shootout). The fact that it was on the road does mean itby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

abmarks arugula Pwr insanity: women lose 6-1 at home to Q and do not drop even one spot. Men lose like that, on the road, and drops four spots. Ok sure. It's.not that we lost one game. It's the results of ALL games played yesterday. I don't think any of the pwr calculators let you customize the calculations to pretend that a given game had not yet been played; that's be the only way to knoby jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Advice - 1 year ago
Trotsky Continue to stare at it. I think it actually makes sense. You just need to let it grow in your head, like a tumor. Okay, now I get it. It would be a little easier to follow if you defined the formulas for your six quantities, which are, in matrix form, / W \ / 1 1 0 0 0 0 \ / RW\ | L | | 0 0 0 0 1 1 | |OTW| | T | | 0 0 1 1 0 0 | |SOW| |DW | = | 1 0 0 0 0 0 | |SOL| |DL |by jtwcornell91 - John Spencer Is Dead

Trotsky I have been agonizing (well...) about how to deal with the ECAC going to the Derp Point System for games. I think I have found a way to record results in the manner that is most informative and least destructive of continuity with prior results, but y'all are smarter and maybe have a better way. TBRW had over 4000 legacy records of team seasons before the rot set in. I would like toby jtwcornell91 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Polls - 1 year ago
Trotsky osorojo What criteria are used to construct college hockey rankings, and which ranking system has most successfully predicted the winners of contests between ranked teams? Google PWR, RPICH, KRACH, and PEBCAK. There's some (slightly old, like pre-weird-OT-and-shootout-system) discussion at Is PEBCAK a new rating system, or did you just tell him to google GOATSE?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
