Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference - 13 years ago
Trotsky If the emphasis is on only the best teams making the national tournament, the solution is to cut back autobids and cut back the tournament field. Assuming 1 autobid per conference (the current 5 + the future BTHC), a 12 team tourney would still allow 6 at large teams (translation: 4 from the WCHA and BTHC, 1 from HE, and 1 from the ECAC or CCHA). I don't advocate that at all but that'sby Swampy - Hockey

nshapiro Swampy Cornell is "the easiest Ivy to get into, the hardest to graduate from," and I have to think that most of us take great pride in this. Is this still true? I know that my freshman year, the first thing we were told was 'look left, look right... one of you three will not make it to graduation.' This is no longer the case. cu722001 PBS had a good show about the NCAA last night. Its premise was that the NCAA's purpose is to channel the revenues generated by college sports from college atheletes to the administrators of college athletic programs and to coaches. This is so obvious it's hard to believe they felt a show was needed to expound upon it. Not only can players not be paid while they are performing, theby Swampy - Hockey

css228 dbilmes css228 Yeah not a good weekend for Cornell to say the least. It was a terrible weekend. Our wrestling team finished second in the nation, our women's hockey team lost in the Frozen Four and our men's hockey team advanced to the ECAC championship game, where it was trounced. Too bad our lacrosse team had to spoil everything by winning a road game against an undefeated Yale team. Foby Swampy - Hockey

ugarte Al DeFlorio Trotsky Such talk would be wasted on Togiaso, who later this year will be a Cornell freshman on full scholarship. Sigh.Given his financial situation, I suspect that's an accurate statement. Exactly. They didn't say "athletic scholarship" and this kid seems like Cornell's version of The Blind Side. css228 Trotsky css228 Yeah pretty much to sum up my thoughts, we should only make a move that makes our competition and national profile stronger (random example pulled out of thin air - if the Ivies were to defect and join Hockey East).I know it was just a random example, but some of the younger fans may not know Hockey East was formed to get away from the Ivies and our academic-based restrictioby Swampy - Hockey

Ben billhoward Let's work on getting the Ivies eligible for the Division 1-A-Something football playoffs, too. The Ivy presidents discriminate against football in a way that doesn't cause them any trouble with any federal affirmative action / equal opportunities commission. Right now that benefits Harvard but in a couple years, maybe us, too. Related to this: why is it that the Ivy champion can'tby Swampy - Hockey
Re: ECAC Inferiority - 13 years ago
billhoward Jim Hyla ebilmes Cornell needs revenue from home games. Hence, teams like Niagara and Wayne State come to Lynah, instead of Cornell traveling to Madison or Ann Arbor or BC or whatever for the kinds of games that would really make us better.Under the present Ivy restrictions, I don't know if the games you suggest would necessarily make us better. ugarte SwampyAlthough I agree with just about everything ugarte says here, I do disagree with the last line. Watching our Harkness-coached NC teams was like watching a work of art. It was a different style in a different time, but the passes were amazing. I only meant to refer to the best of the Schafer-coached squads. My Big Red watching started during the McCutcheon era. ugarte ajh258 We are not talking about the past ugarte, we are talking about the future. I don't think anyone will argue that this season was beyond expectations. However, the goal here is to avoid games like this in years to come, not pat ourselves on the back and say, "Oh it's because they were #1." Really? toddlose scoop85 ajh258 Chris '03 ajh258 Schafer has had many years to figure these problems out and we still do not have a sustained NCAA tourney presence. css228 ajh258 Well, can we recruit the players we need? From what I understand, the big talented players that fits our system are mostly going out west to schools like UND, and we cannot compete on that level due to a lot of factors that have already been discussed multiple times on eLynah. Be careful what you wish for. Exactly what do we mean when we say something is "good" for college hockey? While I'd love to see at least some non-NCAA Finals coverage of college hockey on ESPN, I don't think I'd like college hockey to look like college football or basketball. College hockey is still the kind of sport in which "mid-major" is meaningless. I don't like what thby Swampy - Hockey
