There are a lot of powerful quotes like that. In 1984 there was a parody of the New York Post that was put out with a headline describing a fictional nuclear attack starting World War III that read:

Scoop I agree, it appears Coach Austin is recruiting some outstanding players and winning some recruiting battles. With the right coach, I know of no reason why we can't win in football too.

I think he's being viewed as a lead blocker/fullback type which is something the running game needs. I also hope Cornell's recruiting class brings in some much needed size on the OL and DL.

Recruit Shane McManamon is following in the footsteps of his late brother Jamie McManamon in coming to Cornell. Jamie was tragically killed in an auto accident following his freshman year at Cornell back in 2004.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote at length about Jamie's and Shane's leadership on the occasion of Shane's team winning the state championship in December.

"We're playing for all the great players here who never got a chance to play for state or never won it," said one of the St. Edward captains, Shane McManamon.

They were also playing for the memory of Shane's brother, Jamie.

Those details typically come in May or June, after the candidates have accepted the official offers of admissions and the deadlines for accepting offers at comparable schools have passed.

FWIW, you can look a some of the Rival rated recruits for each school. Harvard and Penn have the most "3 and 2" star recruits in the Ivy League.

Wow, that's sobering. Maybe the only saving grace is that the lists are incomplete. (No Ur on ours.) Until the lists are final, we won't know if this omission favors us or not.

Incomplete and probably not overly accurate. The difference between a two star and a three star player is often whether the guy is on the radar of a FBS school. The difference between a two star and no star is often whether someone shared video with Rivals and if the administrator from some school's board presses the issue. I've seen more than one kid go from no stars to three the moment WVU offers.

Not saying's Penn and Harvard's classes won't prove to be more talented. But Rivals is in business to appeal to the rabid fan bases of top 20 football programs. I'm guessing they lose very sleep ranking Ivy-caliber talent.

If I hadn't heard that about the last three(?) coaches who have some and gone, I'd be more excited.

Slightly off topic, one of the best parts of Tim Pendergast's (failed) tenure was the Friday afternoon brown bag lunch series he ran before each home game where he would break down the opponent, go through the CU playbook, tell you what to look for on game day, and give you a real inside look into the program. It would draw a hearty group of maybe 12 fans each week. I don't think any other coach has done anything similar in recent memory. I think I was the only student to ever attend...

Hausmann a very good get for the Big Red. He's a 2-time all state track star and word is that dissuaded a lot of football offers thinking he would concentrate on track although he was also all state in football.

That's the one - he's godfather to a friend of mine. He's ESPN.com's top high school athlete of all time. Only high school junior ever to go under 4:00.

In hoops, Coach K already made the final four and may win a national championship playing a bunch of freshman at Kentucky but I don't think our hopes should rise to the level of knocking off Harvard with a single recruiting class. What's a successful season for us? Not getting our wins vacated? Is going 4-6 or 5-5 be good enough? We should not be losing to a Wagner College.

For all the griping about the athletic director, he's hired, retained, or had in place to take the reins (DeLuca) the right people.

Don't know why, with an excellent coach and competitive financial aid, we can't win in football. We're been very successful in lacrosse, wrestling, hockey, and now basketball. Don't know why, with an excellent coach and competitive financial aid, we can't win in football. We're been very successful in lacrosse, wrestling, hockey, and now basketball. Sure it will take a few recruiting classes, but think Big Red football under Coach Austin will be back. And it will be fun to watch.

Does it count as "back" when we've been so rarely "been"?

There certainly seems to be more energy surrounding football now than in the past.

Not going to be one this year. So many players have quit (17 at last count)since the end of last season not enough bodies.

Someone was saying on the football board that there wont be one, too many players have quit, did they get cut or quit?

If players quitting means they are putting together a team that wants to work hard to win, then go for it. SU lost a lot of players when their new coach came. The talk was that the former coach was so easy the players got lazy, those that didn't want to work, left. Seems to be working out here.

Thanks for the info on the spring game. I expect a lot of the incoming freshman in the latest recruiting class will have an opportunity for more playing time.

At the end of last season Austin said something along the lines of, "now we're going to find out who wants to be a football player," indicating an off-season commitment, particularly in the weight room....I guess we're finding out....

Rumors of the Spring Game's demise are premature apparently.

The Annual Spring Football Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 30 at 3 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.

With the Cornell website mentioning the return of 42 lettermen, and over 75 players on the spring roster I see no signs of players quitting the program

What was the "Yikes"? The caliber of Cornell football or the multimedia elements on the football site? Site reminds me of a '90s site for the Wham! reunion tour. The site designer doesn't believe in the Bauhaus imperative.

The facilities section of the site mentions a new video board at Schoellkopf. I wonder if this means that better video feeds will be available for football and lacrosse on Redcast. (Assuming that they'll have more cameras in place to provide video for the scoreboard.)

I believe the "Yikes" refers to "Cornell football as envisioned by the Dalton Academy Warblers."
