Re: general 2010-2011 basketball season thread - 13 years ago
ugarte phillysportsfan Yeah these are the kinds of years we wish there was a tournament, while last year a fluke upset in the tournament may have kept us from even getting to the NCAA's However much this team has improved, I still don't think that they would go on a three game run. I guess that's the fun of a tournament, though, since I think the same thing about the hockey team and I'm hoping liby Swampy - Other Sports

Al DeFlorio What is this watching the longsticks run to the net and score? Al, I played midfield back in the days before LSM. When I complained to the coach that a defender ran to take a shot on a break rather than pass for a more sure goal, he explained that except in a tight game there's no way a defender will turn down a chance at a goal. mountainred Wins in the Palestra are few and far between for Cornell; wasn't there a twenty-odd game losing streak there for the Big Red? Now, the team is two home games against Brown (who they beat) and Yale (who they should have) from finishing 6-8 in the League, something I really didn't think was possible after the 0-5 start. Unlike some Ivy squads who started the way Cornell started, thisby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Football -- The Future Starts Now - 13 years ago
Ken711 Trotsky Are the Ivy classes rated anywhere similar to those ubiquitous ratings of D-1 classes? Not to be snarky, but do Ivy recruits register on the national recruiting scene at all? It would be very interesting to see the equivalent of the 4, 3, etc star ratings for our class as compared with our opponents. FWIW, you can look a some of the Rival rated recruits for each school. Re: Recruits - 13 years ago
ithacat TrotskyAlso, young isn't necessarily "awkward." Union's freshman class this season has been insane. Not every freshman is born equal, however. Union's class has 2 from 1989, 5 from 1990, and 1 from 1991. Cornell's class has 1 from 1990, 3 from 1991, and 2 from 1992. Cornell's oldest freshman is only 4 months older than Union's youngest. Had me thinking we'd uncovered the reason for Brown's steady increase in applications. Yeah, and I misread the pole bears site to say "we purloin" instead of "we perform." Hot and Dangerous While I have met Ms Chute, who is both engaging and intelligent and all-around well deserving of the nomination, it is worth noting that almost 2/3 of all grades given at Harvard are As. That is certainly not the case at Cornell or Princeton. Obviously this is because Harvard students are so much smarter than the rest. But then again, there may be another view. Re: Recruits - 13 years ago
In case you haven't seen it yet, BRP reported that three of our recruits -- Ferlin, McCarron, and Ryan -- were named to the USHL all-star teams. Only two schools, UND and Miami, had four recruits named, and only two other schools, UNO and OSU, had three. Not too shabby.by Swampy - Hockey
Re: Cornell Wrestling article in Philly Inquirer - 13 years ago
ebilmes Aside from its academic reputation, Cornell has another advantage. While most Ivy League schools are private institutions, three of its colleges - Agriculture and Life Science, Human Ecology, and Industrial and Labor Relations - are affiliated with the State University of New York system and, as such, have slightly easier admission requirements. I don't even get the logic here. First ofby Swampy - Other Sports

scoop85 Nash and CU got a nice shout-out from Pierre McGuire in the 2nd (and I'm paraphrasing):"Brendon Nash out of Cornell University is having a fine game." OTOH, the other night I was listening to a game in my car, and the announcers singled out Douglas Murray. Re: Recruits - 13 years ago
billhoward Recruiting threads are great to read. It sounds as if we're a year, two at most, from another final four. It probably sounds that way on forum threads for fans of Dartmout, RPI, Harvard (fans?), etcetera. Hope springs eternal. USA Hockey Already one of the most offensively skilled defensemen in the league, MacDonald is improving in other areas. “His game’s coming,” O’Handley said. “He just needs a little work on things like positioning and some techniques.” Sounds like he made exactly the right choice of a college program.by Swampy - Hockey

Re: RPI, Union at Lynah - possible outcome - 13 years ago
billhoward We may be saying the same things differently and you're presuming the first-round play-in goes according to rating. IIRC, pairings are fluid. After both the first and second round, the highest survivor plays the lowest survivor. If Yale remains #1, after the first round bye Yale does not play the winner of the 8/9 play-in game but whoever's left that's worst. With a fixed seeding, lastby Swampy - Hockey

phillysportsfan Ken711 Not totally unexpected. Graduating for starters and a 6th man from last year that accounted for 72% of the scoring I knew they would be bad, but not this bad. Hopefully Courtney has a good recruiting class coming in. Next year's recruiting class is probably the best we have had on paper for many years but we will see how it ends up, pretty impressive considering that Coby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: Women's Season Stuff - 13 years ago
Weder Going off the notes that the athletics department released before the weekend, CU (22-1) now has its most wins in a season in program history, and its 18-game winning streak is three wins shy of the longest in NCAA history (held by Harvard). Too bad about that one loss. Wouldn't it be a trip to be the only school in the NCAA with undefeated seasons for both men and women's hockey? Might eby Swampy - Hockey

scoop85 Seems like football is recruiting some quality talent. Tyler Betros a safety/LB from Jacksonville Bolles HS has won back-to-back FL state championships in football and baseball. billhoward That song started badly, like Mariah Carey writhing with something less than ecstacy, something closer to full body diaper rash.
