Crying over spilled milk - 11 years ago
For those of us old enough to recall the Tetra Pak (but still young enough not to have forgotten), this article brought back memories. Back in the day, legend maintained that the Tetra Pak was invented at Cornell, but apparently it was only first introduced here to the US (see Robert Holland obituary). As I recall, Cornell Dairy stopped using it as a milk container sometime in the late 60's, buby George64 - John Spencer Is Dead

Snapper Is Rochester a hotbed for hockey? I don't know if greater Rochester is a hockey hotbed, but Cole Bardreau is from Fairport, and Ryan Callahan, Rangers' captain, is from Hilton and Brian Gionta, Les Canadiens' captain (capitaine?), is from Greece, now better known as the home of cruel and crude teenage boys and a newly wealthy school bus monitor.by George64 - Hockey

Grateful Dead's Barton Hall concert immortalized . . . - 11 years ago
Grateful Dead's Barton Hall concert (May 8, 1977) is among 25 sounds to be inducted into National Recording Registry. The concert has been cited as one of their best performances ever. The recording was hailed for its sound quality. On another musical note, Robert Moog, PhD '64, is honored with a playable Google Doodle today.by George64 - John Spencer Is Dead

Trotsky ugarteShe was offended more about the resounding cries of "SUCKS" and "Drop Dead" and all of that. It isn't about heads exploding or anything like that anyway. It is about not wanting to be the parents of a 4 year old who tells grandma "traffic sucks." It is about, for me anyway, discretion and courtesy, not the desire to have jackboots as part of the standarby George64 - Hockey
Re: Cornell - Dartmouth post-series good news fun times - 12 years ago
Boorish behavior isn't limited to the Dartmouth coach. Following the game, as Cornell took its victory skate around the rink, two Dartmouth managers walked directly towards the two photographers trying to capture the moment, blocking their shots. I have to think it was intentional -- courteous people usually wait or detour around people taking pictures.by George64 - Hockey

Jacob '06 Robb George64 In slo-mo, the net appears to bulge.Sure does. I really can't make out the puck until it's already back out, but the net should not move like that from a crossbar strike. I lose the puck once it gets around the goalie until it pops back out. I can't tell if it is actually the net bulging, or if it is that water droplet on the glass distorting the image as the camera movby George64 - Hockey

Re: What makes a great/bad college hockey jersey? - 12 years ago
We can only hope that Nike doesn't opt to redesign hockey jerseys. (Nike unveils 'platinum' hoops uniforms) Even if they do, we may be safe as the Nike brand didn't exist the last time we won a national championship. (The teams selected have won NCAA titles wearing Nike gear: the Arizona, UConn, Duke, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina and Syracuse men and the Baylor and UConn women.)by George64 - Hockey

Swampy scoop85 Al DeFlorio Swampy marty What's the chance that Bloomberg gave the anonymous gift? Does he have any other connection with Cornell?I'd be surprised if it's Bloomberg. I'd think, if it ever came out, there would be howls about conflict of interest and the like. I've seen a few published reports that the gift is NOT from Bloomberg (sorry -- can't link to anything off hand). Gby George64 - Hockey

Re: Jersey Mockups - 12 years ago
For those too young to remember, here's a picture of Cornell's 1973-76 jersey referenced above — easily the ugliest ever. If my recall is correct, it was designed as a Hum Ec class project. Why it lasted three years is beyond me. Having followed Cornell hockey for over 50 years, I'm bit of a traditionalist. The only change that I'd offer is a block "C" (sans bear) on the front oby George64 - Hockey
Re: Cornell Thanksgiving & Christmas hockey - 12 years ago
Another possibility for an alternate-year Thanksgiving game is Quicken Loans Arena (hate the name, but a good venue, nonetheless) in Cleveland. Ohio could provide a quality opponent (OSU, Miami, Bowling Green). In the '80s, Cornell played in a tournament at the old Richfield Coliseum halfway between Cleveland and Akron and, as I recall, the tourney drew well. Re: Some "D" in Cornell or Penn - 12 years ago
Rita Al DeFlorio Trotsky Now up 48-38. Mathews with 548 yards passing according to ESPN.Add 86 passing yards for Tasker and you get 634 total. Yikes! Now a Final: 48-38. And our QB is only a sophomore? Savage is a senior, but fifth-year eligible, so conceivably his top three receivers could be back, too.by George64 - Other Sports

Rita George64 Cornell Red Alert: Scrivens v Greening in Toronto Sun Saturday/tonight 11/12 From the ESPN.com, a preview of tonight's game.
