Re: Captain McCarron? - 11 years ago
Josh '99 The History page on cornellbigred.com lists captains under the season-by-season records, and I got far enough back that I wasn't sure anymore whether a given player was a goalie without finding one, but it also doesn't list assistant captains, which I would guess is more common for a goalie, on account of the approaching refs stuff that you mentioned. Re: Ivy League hockey recruiting - 11 years ago
billhoward Still amazing that PrincetonPenn's Class of 1923 builds a nice rink on campus circa 1970 and a 6, 8 years later, Penn disbands hockey. Then a year later Penn goes to the final four in hoops and hockey is irrevocably forgotten. I still wonder with the growth of youth hockey across the US, if Penn might someday get back in. Penn dropped hockey after the 1977-78 season, prompting Geoff Roby George64 - Hockey
Re: Ivy League hockey recruiting - 11 years ago
Furthermore, even though Cornell, Brown and Dartmouth do not have the endowments to do that, they successfully lobbied the Ivy League to allow their athletic programs to match whatever package Princeton, Harvard and Yale are offering. I need some clarification. I thought that financial aid was essentially "need based" and administered though Day Hall, not Bartels Hall. I was underby George64 - Hockey

Trotsky To be fair, there are probably a half dozen guys on the Q roster who qualify for AARP. This reminded me that Dick Bertrand wasn't allowed to play in the 1970 NCAAs because, as I recall, he was either too old or had some junior hockey experience that disqualified him, yet he played in every other game that year. Does anyone know for sure why he didn't play?by George64 - Hockey

KeithK billhoward Beeeej KeithK Ben Given that the university will not do this, and the financial and personal investment I and others (including the university) make in Cornell sports, I want our sports teams to win games and titles -- I want a return on my investment. That comes in the form of on-field success (without off-field unpleasantness). For me, return on investment is all of the memoraby George64 - Hockey
Kyle Dake and other dominant Cornell athletes - 11 years ago
Kyle Dake’s extraordinary achievements led me to think about other truly dominant Cornell athletes. By dominant I mean athletes who stood head and shoulders above their intercollegiate peers as defined by sport and era (to accommodate changed levels of competition). The following list is biased towards athletes of the last 50 years because that coincides with my time on the Hill and as anby George64 - Other Sports

billhoward Dake wins 2-0, #2 Taylor (Penn State) gets another pin, so the match of the decade or whatever, it's on as the last match Saturday night, so that would be around 9:30-10:00 Eastern. Note picture of winner Taylor and crestfallen Dake at 2006 Junior Nationals in this article on their longterm friendship. Here's hoping that this time Dake is on top of the podium.by George64 - Other Sports

Rochester D and C sports columnist Kevin Oklobzija, writing today about the hit by Sabres' Patrick Kaleta's on Rangers' Brad Richards, interviewed U of R spinal surgeon Robert Molinari. Towards the end of the article, Oklobzija notes "He is now treating Fairport's Cole Bardreau, who suffered a major neck injury in a game for Cornell in January. Trotsky RatushnyFan sah67 Riley Nash got his first NHL point tonight in Carolina's 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay, setting up Drayson Bowman for a one-timer with a nice feed off the half-boards. Of this season, yes. Don't forget about last year's assist!! Riley Nash If this keeps up he will pass Gretzky in 4869. Does this assume no more lockouts?by George64 - Hockey
