Re: Cornell NCAA Basketball - 14 years ago
RichH redGrinch Liz98 I was astonished to see the sports section cover story in the Post. Even more astonished to find John Feinstein's article inside. I had to share ... attached is an image of today's sports section. maybe someone lost a bet inside the sports dept. seriously - Maryland game was a late game... and compared to Thursday, the Cornell game was the top hoops story of the day. Re: You Are the Committee - 14 years ago
Jim Hyla KeithK Trotsky Jeez. That's dirty in any league. Meh. If it was in open ice that would just be a garden variety charging penalty IMO. It's the proximity to the boards that elevates it into the danger zone.I think wherever that was it's a major, at least I hope so. Rule 6-8 is no contact to the head or neck of any manner. He also left his feet. I think that's enough to be tossed from tby kingpin248 - Hockey
Re: Basketball Selection Show - 14 years ago
jkahn See this analysis by Matt Carberry based upon Bradley-Terry (KRACH) ratings: Temple is #9, Cornell # 39. And as a result, the ratings would have given Temple a #3 seed (I placed them in the Midwest region, 1st/2nd rounds in Providence) and Cornell a #10 (I put them in the East, 1st/2nd rounds in Jacksonville, opening against Xavier). The final B-T matched 32 of 34 at-large teams, and nby kingpin248 - Other Sports
Re: Basketball Selection Show - 14 years ago
ugarte I was surprised that the NIT passed on Princeton this year. Princeton will be playing Duquesne in the CBI; Harvard will be focusing on their studies. Sucks will be in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament; they open against Appalachian State.by kingpin248 - Other Sports

Re: Brown basketball - 14 years ago
YankeeLobo Brown and Cornell both playing out of their minds. Need to win this to avoid a 14 seed. Also free on WVBR. Cornell 51, Brown 47 at the half.by kingpin248 - Other Sports
Re: big weekend for basketball @Harvard/@Dartmouth - 14 years ago
phillysportsfanYeah Wittman really put on a show for the 14 NBA scouts in attendance Also in attendance were some "name" media, among them Andy Katz, who posted this on ESPN.com. Aside: It seems from Katz's tweets that Sucks basketball normally does its postgame pressers in a "utility closet."by kingpin248 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Women's Hockey - 14 years ago
scoop85 How does the women's playoff system work? From here: Top eight qualify. Best-of-3 quarterfinals Feb. 26-28 at higher seeds. Semifinals and championship played Friday and Sunday respectively, all at highest remaining seeds. This document doesn't specify which weekend that is, but it sounds like the next weekend, so 3/5 and 3/7.by kingpin248 - Other Sports
Re: Just out......#25 in basketball - 14 years ago
New polls out. Two votes in the AP; 24 votes in the coaches' poll; outside the top 25 in both. Lunardi's newest bracket has Cornell as the Midwest #11, playing Baylor in Providence in the first round.by kingpin248 - Other Sports
Re: Just out......#25 in basketball - 14 years ago
ugarte Helpful day for us: St. John's smoked Louisville and Seton Hall beat Notre Dame. By the B-T, yesterday's results moved the rank of Cornell's strength of schedule from 63 to 55. The Big Red is presently ranked 18. Here are the same ratings data, except sorted into separate tables for each conference. Clicking on "IL" in the row of abbreviations at the top will take you to the Iby kingpin248 - Other Sports
Re: Beanpot Tournament - 14 years ago
sockralex RichH Very strange...I just noticed that there's a Bully Hill Vineyards ad on the boards near the red line. Yeah, that's standard at the TD Garden. I think there's one at Nassau, or wherever the Islanders play, as well. Not sure if the Sabres have one, for some reason I think they do. Definitely an interesting way to advertise the winery, but not as creative as writing it on a goatby kingpin248 - Hockey
Re: Just out......#25 in basketball - 14 years ago
The "Pomeroy" B-T calculation is actually not by Pomeroy - it's by me. I am simply using his data set and tipping my hat to him, just as JTW credits the USCHO CHN composite schedule. It is not a coincidence that my B-T tables look very similar to the KRACH; I mention on the main page the impetus for me to start calculating these. Cornell was #16 after last Saturday and at 20 headingby kingpin248 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell vs. St. John's Men's BB Roll Call - 14 years ago
For many years, I have produced just such a rating set, inspired by the work of JTW and those who came before him: B-T (Z-Ratings) for NCAA Division I basketball Cornell is (through games of 12/21) ranked at 19, two spots above St. John's, and only four below the Jayhawks. This is not exactly the same Bradley-Terry formulation used by JTW. My ratings are based on the "original"by kingpin248 - Other Sports

Re: Cornell Basketball - ECAC Holiday Classic - 14 years ago
At halftime, St. John's 37, Hofstra 36. Also, for what it's worth, Hofstra is in the CAA, not the America East (they made that move in 2001, I believe).by kingpin248 - Other Sports

Re: Should the goal have counted? - 14 years ago
Rule 4, section 9 (Goal Not Allowed): m. If an attacking player deliberately leaves his feet by jumping or diving and his momentum carries him into the crease area, regardless of whether he lands in the crease before or after the ball enters the goal. CU 83, Penn (sucks) 57 - final. Dancing again!! Now irrelevant, but for the benefit of French Rage: Ivy basketball tiebreakers are all settled "on the court."
